What are you talking about, isn't your credit score fucked? I had unpaid medical bills from when I was like 19 show up 5 years later when I was applying for apartments to live at.

Solution:

NEVER FUCKING GO TO THE ER FOR A NON LIFE-THREATENING EMERGENCY

I got food / alcohol poisoning once and my friend dragged me into the ER half-conscious thinking I was gonna die, what do I get? a fucking $4,000 bill for an hour visit so they could inject some fluids into my veins, when a $10 thing of pedialyte would have done the trick.

You seriously went to the ER for a hangnail? Man... I just grab an exacto blade or knife and some rubbing alcohol and cut those out myself. I'm good at that.
But that's all the doctor will do for a serious hangnail. Grab some 'medical' pliers and cut that fucker out, then bandage it.

I haven't been to a normal doctor in at least 10 years.. and I have health insurance. I wouldn't even consider it for anything but heroic medicine, if I break my leg off or something. I'll never understand people who go to the doctor because they get sick. Heal yourself. If you really have to go to the doctor, schedule an appointment with your normal doctor, the ER is for dying people.

i sorta dis agree with this, because after i got my arm set when i broke it i tried lifting something heavy and i think i fucked up the set, and still get odd pains 7 or so years later, and imagine the older i get wont help it

so unexpirenced people might set it wrong, causing long term problems

although i do think setting bones should be taught in like school or something, sounds like basic and invaluable information everyone should know

but how would you make a cast? plastering a splint up or something?

That happened because you lifted something heavy immediately after the break. Even when you break your bone and get it set by professionals, they advise you not to exert that limb and refrain from playing sports for at least 8 weeks. Falling on it or even hitting it again can refracture the bone.

i understand that,in my example i was trying to show what can happen with a unproperly set bone

unless its an emergency situation, i dont know if id want someone with no training, who read something on teh interwebz to set my bone, and splint it

I've only been a few times and it's free. Someone split my eyelid open and i needed stitches. I stabbed myself in the arm with a fork tipped knife when gardening and i couldn't open/close my hand without it hurting, the pharmacist sent me to the hospital.
One time i bent over near an yucca and the spiky leaf slid past my eyeball and stabbed me in the back of my eye socket, cutting my eye in the process. I thought i better get some antibiotics for that sooner rather than later.

Depending on how pressing it is, I would call various hospitals to see their indigent write offs.  In Colorado, we have the Colorado Indigent Care Program that will allow the hospital to write off a ton of your med bills.  Some hospitals have it, some do not.

I keep a stockpile of antibiotics, blood pressure pills, among other medications for whenever I need them. Back when I was a student, it was free and included in my tuition to go to the healthcare center, so I went any time I even had the slightest cough just to obtain a bunch of antibiotics to save for later use.

If I were to ever get a hangnail or an infection, I would get a sterile syringe or needle (which you can buy at any piercing shop no matter where you live) and puncture that shit myself and squeeze all the pus out. Put antibiotic cream over it, and dip into a cycle of your antibiotics depending on how severe the infection is. Problem solved.


The fact that is has come to this appalls and disgusts me.  The states is FUCKED.

Did you read?  I wrote that I went to an after-hours clinic before and was told to go the ER.  I work during normal going-to-the-doctor hours.

I'd actually done that exact thing earlier in the week, it just turned out that I had missed a bit of the nail and things had only gotten worse.  The day I went, the toe itself was numb, but there was a mole-like growth coming out of the wound that hurt like hell and that I wasn't able to stomach cutting again.  I (thought I) needed anesthestics and antibiotics - though if I'd known what the bill would be I'd've sucked it up and just hoped that it wasn't turning septic.

Yes, I read. It doesn't change my response.

I worked many a year during doctors hours. I never had an employer that wouldn't allow me to leave the premises for a doctor appointment.

Is your employer keeping you captive? Should we notify the authorities?

It disgusts me that people have to diagnose their medical condition themselves when it could be life-threatening.  There's tons of posts on this forum where people are asking medical questions when really they should be seeing a doctor.  It's sick that people have to play guessing games with their lives because they can't afford the care they need.
