Of course it helps if something bad happens.  That is what insurance is for.  By the way, they showed you a fake bill.  Your insurance compnay probably had to fork over about a quarter of that.

If there is any involvement I would like to see the government have in the health care system is to insist that everybody get billed the same for the same service.  Hospitals rip off the cash consumer to an incredible degree.

Yeah I kinda started to get it there after my last response.

Sarcasm does not work well in print.  It is hard to do without inflection and visual cues.

I live in Estonia. The taxes here are quite high. The government gets around 75% of your salaries worth. So if you earn 1000€, the government nets ariound 750€. Quite high considering we have one of the lowest wages in europe. Free health care is the only good thing here, otherwise it's an shitty place to live.
I do like the country, it's beautiful, but the economy is a dump and it only gets worse as everyone is trying to flee this sinking ship.

Last year I had a kidney stone and I tried to ignore the pain.  That worked for about 20 minutes and I had to go to the hospital, I thought I was dying.  WORST PAIN EVER.  I could barely move.  I got an x-ray, an IV of some really good painkiller, a test of my bloody urine, and about $8,000 worth of bills that I cannot afford.  I really wish I could have rode out the pain, but it felt like I was gambling with my life.  If it happens again, I'm just gonna pop some motrin and hope for the best.

I'm pretty happy with how the system works here, and so are most people I think (although there are some flaws.) A bit of bad luck should not result in financial ruin IMO.

I watched someone burn off a cancerous growth with a red hot bolt the other day. Thank fuck no one's doing that here, it just wouldn't be acceptable for anyone to have to go through that.

Hammered or not you gotta do what you've gotta do. I was on a job alone in the middle of fuck all nowhere and sliced my finger/hand really well. I tried to bandage it but it just wasn't happening. Even good and solid application of protection for the wound wasn't good enough. Burned a lot of it shut, other option was stitch it myself.

My dad taught me 2 very important things growing up far from hospitals.
1) learn to sew
2) pain won't kill you

These 2 things can be worth thousands.

1. Don't.*

*Exception: you are bleeding out, having a heart attack, etc.  But if you've got a broken bone or somesuch, google instructions on how to set that shit yourself.

2.  Whatever your injury is (and don't forget, it better be something that'll kill you in the next 20 minutes or it's not worth it), tell them it's something absurdly insignificant, like a scratch or a bruise or a cold or something.  Make sure your fake ailment is extremely, extremely trivial.  Only refer to it as an "owie" if you can.  I recently received a bill from the ER, and there was a $1375 charge for simply showing up and reporting my injury.  The guy I talked to at the billing office told me that the hospital assigned people on a scale from 1 to 5 on severity of injury (5 being the worst), and that the initial fee varied in proportion to how bad off you were.  I had been assigned a 3.  What was my injury?

A hangnail.

Now, at the time I thought it was a serious hangnail.  It was turning colors, I didn't feel anything when I prodded it, it had only gotten worse over the past week, and I have an allergy to my big toe turning gangrenous and falling off.  Plus after-hours clinic I went to first told me they didn't have the equipment to take care of it (my guess is they didn't have needles/local anesthetics) and to go to the ER.  Seemed serious to me.  But once an actual doctor looked at my foot (after an hour's wait), he informed me that it was not, in fact, infected or in danger of falling off.  What sort of injury warrants a 1 or a 2, I'm not sure, but I can't imagine it's something you'd actually need to go to the hospital for.  Which leads me to point number 3:

3.  Leave as soon as humanly possible.

Hospitals are not jails; they cannot prevent you from just walking out.  And they can't charge you if they're not fixing you.  If I had left right then (when I learned that I was not in danger of losing parts of my anatomy), I could have avoided a $1000 charge from the hospital for the actual procedure that fixed my foot plus a $500 charge from the doctor for the same procedure, not to mention the 4 hours of waiting I went through before I was treated.  If you learn that what you've got is something you can fix yourself (even if it is going to be a bloody, painful-as-hell ordeal), for the love of god do not give the hospital the opportunity to take another pound of flesh.

That is all.  Stay safe, y'all.

You don't have to pay that shit.

I have $20k+ due in ER bills and I haven't paid a penny, they don't even send me bills anymore.

Some of you guys just seem flat out retarded. Going to the ER for a hangnail? For mono? I wouldn't even go to the regular doctor for that.

I keep a stockpile of antibiotics, blood pressure pills, among other medications for whenever I need them. Back when I was a student, it was free and included in my tuition to go to the healthcare center, so I went any time I even had the slightest cough just to obtain a bunch of antibiotics to save for later use.

If I were to ever get a hangnail or an infection, I would get a sterile syringe or needle (which you can buy at any piercing shop no matter where you live) and puncture that shit myself and squeeze all the pus out. Put antibiotic cream over it, and dip into a cycle of your antibiotics depending on how severe the infection is. Problem solved.
