Some advice for if you have to go to the emergency room * 1
    #18544730 -

1. Don't.*

*Exception: you are bleeding out, having a heart attack, etc.  But if you've got a broken bone or somesuch, google instructions on how to set that shit yourself.

2.  Whatever your injury is (and don't forget, it better be something that'll kill you in the next 20 minutes or it's not worth it), tell them it's something absurdly insignificant, like a scratch or a bruise or a cold or something.  Make sure your fake ailment is extremely, extremely trivial.  Only refer to it as an "owie" if you can.  I recently received a bill from the ER, and there was a $1375 charge for simply showing up and reporting my injury.  The guy I talked to at the billing office told me that the hospital assigned people on a scale from 1 to 5 on severity of injury (5 being the worst), and that the initial fee varied in proportion to how bad off you were.  I had been assigned a 3.  What was my injury?

A hangnail.

Now, at the time I thought it was a serious hangnail.  It was turning colors, I didn't feel anything when I prodded it, it had only gotten worse over the past week, and I have an allergy to my big toe turning gangrenous and falling off.  Plus after-hours clinic I went to first told me they didn't have the equipment to take care of it (my guess is they didn't have needles/local anesthetics) and to go to the ER.  Seemed serious to me.  But once an actual doctor looked at my foot (after an hour's wait), he informed me that it was not, in fact, infected or in danger of falling off.  What sort of injury warrants a 1 or a 2, I'm not sure, but I can't imagine it's something you'd actually need to go to the hospital for.  Which leads me to point number 3:

3.  Leave as soon as humanly possible.

Hospitals are not jails; they cannot prevent you from just walking out.  And they can't charge you if they're not fixing you.  If I had left right then (when I learned that I was not in danger of losing parts of my anatomy), I could have avoided a $1000 charge from the hospital for the actual procedure that fixed my foot plus a $500 charge from the doctor for the same procedure, not to mention the 4 hours of waiting I went through before I was treated.  If you learn that what you've got is something you can fix yourself (even if it is going to be a bloody, painful-as-hell ordeal), for the love of god do not give the hospital the opportunity to take another pound of flesh.

That is all.  Stay safe, y'all.

My bf needed to get 6 stitches on his arm, he has incredibly good insurance.

25 min in the ER cost him $2,000

When I was pregnant last year and my health went south very quickly, I had to go to the ER for IV fluids (I couldn't eat or drink anything) went about 5 times guess how much $ ( I have no insurance)

$15,000 for IV fluids and nausea medicine.

The charge wasn't for the fluids and the medicine.

Haven't been to the ER myself since I had my first panic attack.

Fuck that shit was pointless but they were nice enough to care for me

Call me a pothead, and take my money.

I haven't been for someone else since my friend OD'd on .4 heroin and 4mg Xanax

That was worth it. Totally free, and they are nicer than ever.

No bullshit at all. I agree with the OP entirely.

But if you have the money to spend, don't hesitate going.

Especially if you fear something fatal

I have it, am still being charged ~$1000.  I, too, thought insurance was a magical panacea.  I was wrong.

have you ever even looked at a medical bill before? i think not. i got a scope which took around 6 hours total, about 2 hours of nurses and doctors tme, the rest was waiting in a bed, alone in a room with 4 other empty beds. the only drug i recieved was IV valium. which costs the hospital what... 75 cents for 10 mg? i probably recieved even less than that cuz it was IV but still

my parents had to pay over 7,500 and we have pretty good insurence.

no matter how you break it down, the people with insurence end up paying just as much if not more then everyone else. for people who either cant afford it or get off scott free

I had major surgery and paid very little out of pocket.  Apparently your insurance sucks.

Last fall my dirty lying snake of a roommate gave me mono (did I mention that she's dirty?) and I had to go to the ER twice because my throat was so swollen that I couldn't breathe..

The first time I went was to see what the reason was (mono).

Second time I went was because I was dizzy and couldn't breathe...
So the doctor comes in.. "Yep.. looks like mono. Get some rest."
THANKS. Thanks for that expensive tip, friend. He kinda laughed at me as well. I told him I didn't come to the ER to be told that I had mono twice. I wanted some help. Eventually another nurse came in and prescribed me a steroid to de-swell my throat and some pain killers for the pain of the walls of my throat from rubbing together.

My family has pretty good insurance so I think both trips cost $500 together..

I was just pretty pissed at how casual the doctor was with me.

My sister said the same thing haha.
"stop letting your roommate try to kiss you while you're sleeping."

We would all drink together so sharing shotglasses was a common occurrence. Damn..

5) Those big books that you get in the mail when you sign up for insurance:  READ THEM.  Ask questions before you sign up, and know what you are paying for.

It'll save you in the long run.

Yeah.  I had to actually pay for my own insurance with after tax money.  What a fucking concept, eh?  Actually paying for something you get.

I go to university in a different state from where I live full time so I didn't really have much of an option.

Wow, the government really ought to do something about making medical costs more affordable. Some kind of act to do with medical care. Hmmm.
