Emergency Alert System...
    #3112753 - 09/09/04 10:58 AM (12 years, 8 months ago)

so I have a question...
you know how you have those emergency alert system tests on you TV every so often? Well when will they EVER be used? Because I do recall watching TV during 9-11 which was (in my opinon) an EMERGENCY and cartoons were still on! However, they feel the need to interupt my Style show with a system that didn't work when it was suppose to.

I think that is an apocalyptical emergency system. If the world is completely fucked beyond hope, then we will probably see those annoying screen's.

The emergency alert system doesn't necessarily take over the screen with those bands of color and an annoying tone. They are on all the time here in Iowa, and it's usually related to the weather (severe ice storms and tornados and such). Usually a few beeps and the news will run across the bottom of the screen, or a map will stay in the corner of your screen over what ever show you're watching. It's more obvious if you're listening to the radio, because they will have those annoying tones, and then the national weather service will come on, saying what's up. It's a service to let YOU know if YOU are in immediate danger. Unless you were at ground zero during 9-11, you wouldn't have heard those tones, imho. Besides, every news station in the area was there, we knew what was going on

I'm in NY and the only time I can ever remember the emergency alert system being used was a few years ago when a tremendous winter storm was headed our way. Like agr8fulchick said it's just to alert you to check your tv screen or pay attention to the radio.

Condolences on your losses, I lost a cousin in that crash as well. People die all the time, I could die when I go for my daily jog. People die for unjust reasons around the world almost every day ( it could be daily, I just don't know ) that does not mean talking about it in a different perspective is wrong.

America did need the kick in the crotch, they needed to wake up to the fact that they are the same as every other country. Just because their red necked president is claming that their country is free does not make it so.

I did not mean to insult you, but if my perspective bothered you, deal with it.

They used the emergency broadcast system here in phoenix during 9/11.

It doesnt make annoying bars and noises. It just beeps and overrides your current program to either spew video or audio or just overlay text on whats going on.

You forgot to mention the tornados sirens that we so frequently have to hear, and the really annoying test of them every first Wednesday of the month!

Our tornado alerts are on Saturdays at noon back home, and here are Wednesday morning at 10am or noon. Weird how it's different times in different places like that. When people are visiting on a bright and sunny day, and the sirens go off they all freak out!

I've only heard my specific siren (as in the one for my actual neighborhood) go off once, and that was two weeks ago when a tornado had touched down in town. We were all ok though  . We've had many a tornado go through town, and unless it is within a few miles and you're really in danger, the siren doesn't go off. I guess that's what we get for having so many tornados. If the siren goes off you know that you'd better stop watching the tv and actually get to shelter- fast!

Here's to bright sunny days all around!

:sun:  :sun:  :sun:  :sun:

I live in Oklahoma, they use it for severe weather all the time.
