Need outside opinions on DEEP SCRATCHING...

I'm sorry to say this because it has slowed my flawless run of spawn from good progress to the beginning signs of overlay, but i had to use fine grade vermiculite (horticultural grade) for my casings and to put it clearly, straight up FINE GRADE VERM does not suit well for casings for many reasons. as listed below:

- A 100% steralized casing mixture is not desired. The presence of such bacteria in the casing actually help the mycelium to colonize the casing layer faster then a 100% steralized casing.

- Considering I used fine grade vermiculite, when you mist this stuff down during the pre-pinning stage, it matts up and becomes very heavy.
------------ I discovered the above theory is apsolutely 100% correct because after scratching my casings that have been going for 4 days with slow growth they are not moving like a motha %&%*$#

- Moisture Content. After misting the casings the fine grade verm. is so fine that it seals up, sealing the gasses given off from the mycelium where the desired moisture content for casings is to be moist but porous.



Yes I have read that some people don't use the deep scratching technique because it slows down growth and **IF** the casing is done properly there should be no need for a deep scratch.

However, my casings were not done 100% correctly... simply because the fine grade verm is not porous at all unless scratched.

I've never had any problems w/ fine grade verm. I use sta-green I think. And my opinion on deep scratching is don't do it. Unless your casing isn't doing anything at all for at least a couple weeks.

I agree cause i cant find any course verm so i just bought some scotts potting soil from Home Depot that has coir allready mixed in with it...I am going to try some perlite as a bottom layer instead of verm due to the wicking effect that perlite has...It should allow for better water supply and hopefully not contam like verm does :thumbup: :smirk:

My friend prefers fine verm in his casing mixtures because it holds more moisture. And like GoodOlBattonAss said, deep scratching the casing should be a last resort.

fine verm is better for casing, because it holds more moisture .
if you have a problem with the casing sealing itself, then you have over watered .
