so my first casing, that was a week older than the rest finally grew mushrooms, 3 grams dry....
i didnt know what overlay looked like and now that i have figured it out, even my casing that grew shrooms has it. so i was looking at my other casings, and they are in aluminum trays, so i pulled the aluminum away a little bit and saw pins growing on the side of the casing, but there is none at all on top, so i looked online and found that i have overlay on all of them, so a few minutes ago i scratched all of it off,, then i scratched about i millimeter or 2 deeper. was that right to do? i really dont know how to deep scratch. do i only scratch a little bit of the casing layer off and leave it, or scratch it all off to the substrait and put on another layer, im really lost and i want some more pins....

pretty sure scratching is meant to mixup the dead stuff with the good mycelia network so it can break down the dead stuff as food also get dead stuff outta way. remember mycelia is a decomposer.
-------------------- Prohibition will work great injury to the cause of temperance. It is a species of intemperance within itself, for it goes beyond the bounds of reason in that it attempts to control a man's appetite by legislation, and makes a crime out of things that are not crimes. A Prohibition law strikes a blow at the very principles upon which our government was founded.

Scratch down into the mycelium (2-4mm) whever you have overlay. Recase / patch as required, cover it for 24/48 hrs then remove cover. Don't wait until you see myc all over the casing layer ( IMO this is to late for "birthing" esp with PR's which overlay really bad. I birth my PR trays straight after casing them) .
Good luck
