My take on Deep scratching:
I don't think Deep scratching is neccesary by any means, but I use it in a few cases-

-If my casing develops overlay, (before any flushes) I do a deep scratch. In my experience, this helps to initiate pinning. It may also damage the mycelium on top though, so be careful as to what you're doing and don't scratch too much.

-if pinning is minimal and there aren't many shrooms growing (uneven pinset) unlesss they're large ones.

-After a large flush when the top layer looks dry- seems to help.

Basically, I learned when and when not to do it by experimenting, which you should too, and I'm sure you will. Just don't get impatient and ruin your casing... it does take a while sometimes, and if everything looks healthy, it probably doesn't need a deep scratch.

LOL....(MOE)

You can scratch the top of it when there is an overlay of mycelium. When the mycelium grows on top of itself creating a glossy layer that does not permit it from fruiting, it also does not permit it ro breathe properly. Or when you just aren't getting as many mushrooms as you should.

Scratch it about 1/4 inch deep and re-case with a very thin layer of casing soil again.
