Overcoming fear
    #18468865 -

I feel fear is what holds me back from progressing in my occult practices.

When I talk to spirits through a trance, (but not on large psychedelic doses) I become overcome with fear and I lose contact. It feels like an energy field that excites my fear. In other words I do not feel mentally afraid, but regardless of my perspective or thoughts, I feel a powerful energy and uncontrollable and irrational fear. It is like a drug is taking hold of me.

This also makes it really hard for me to get through the initial stages of astral projection.

Once when I had a VERY active unhappy spirit in my home I was exposed to this fear. While i actually wanted to confront the being my hair would still stand on end and the closer it was the more intense the irrational and non mental fear was.

I am sure some of you know what I speak of. I feel like I am very weak at withstanding, or resisting this energy. Though I also feel like I could perform quite well if I could overcome this.

So how can I exercise my will to withstand this energy? Does anyone have any practical advice? Besides white light? Or am I just a coward?

Please refrain from derailing my thread with opposing beliefs/skepticism towards mine, I don't care if you don't believe in spirits.

Have you tried self hypnosis?  A very good and extremely easy to use technique is eyes open hypnosis and a great book is "Instant Self-Hypnosis by Forbes Robbins Blair"

Good luck.

what has worked for me with improving effect over time is to look at the present moment with increasing objectivity while asking your self "what purpose does my fear serve?"

The trick is to catch fear as it arises, and that's tricky because it's a feeling and feelings are hard to pick out as they aren't solid objects

It's good to sense when that inner turbulence of fear arises, stay aware of it and don't feed it, don't give it attention, that's not to say turn away from it because that could be done out of fear, it's to just not feed it, don't energize it

I've found that mushrooms really helped honing this sense of when to leave fear alone, if you hold onto the fear during a trip you'll sure know about it! But I don't think they are necessary, they just taught me that if you hold onto the fear then it will chew you up & spit you out, or you can leave it alone & stay in perfect happiness

Maybe your fear is of losing consciousness?  Maybe you could take comfort in the fact that you do it every night when you go to sleep   I prefer states of consciousness with lucidity and laser focus though, so I don't have any particular methods for you.

Everything is better than it was the last time.  I'm good.

If we could look into each others hearts, and understand the unique challenges each of us faces, I think we would treat each other much more gently, with more love, patience, tolerance, and care.

It takes a lot of courage to go out there and radiate your essence.

I know you scared, you should ask us if we scared too.  If you was there, and we just knew you cared too.

Thanks for the initial share, and this insight. I've reached a psychedelic threshold as well that has frightened me. For me the surrender is in the framework to reality -- up, down, time, perspective. The specific fear is letting go is losing sanity; as in no longer able to function.

Similar fear perhaps...

The intuitive direction i receive when threshold-ing is to "let go". Once, while mushing, I had a friend direct me from a meditative silence with "purpose! it's purpose that's holding you back". I understood imidiately and shifted out of purpose in my mind. My mind was still and eyes open. The trees and view around me started to vibrate and shift. I then felt a bubble envelop my head and body. With a blast of pure emotion, I was somewhere else -- but still there. Everything kind of looked Matrix-ish. 8 seconds later my buddy says something and snaps me out.

Not really an answer to your fear, because I haven't understood my own yet.

I was told during a trip that everything external is being projected through my subconscious mind and I don't have actual control of myself or anything, and that no matter what no one could prove it to me other-wise because its not real to begin with.

I do have fear as well some of beliefs are different from many and in dealing with them I have a fear as well because I am alone with my practices ---pagan but anyway I tell my inner child to look at things logically and whats the worse that can happen but sometimes that does not help either but in the end things always end up going down how the mother universe wants it too and it will always be perfection

you have to accept the fear within you, as it is happening. this is what i've come to realize. you can't fight it. you have to let the fear happen, no matter how irrational it may seem. it's not easy, but that's what you have to do.

a common tendency is to try and fight with it, or to "think positive" to counter-act the fear. it doesn't work. you have to let it be. when you can fully let the fear express itself, it will have its moment and dissolve. instead of trying to "not be afraid" fully embrace the feeling of being afraid, and it will eventually transform into a feeling of peace and calm.

this dude does a really good job explaining it as well: http://www.calmdownmind.com/faq-on-the-state-of-allowing/

I like that idea resonant.

for me the best thing about psyches is that I am locked into the experience and forced to withstand the fear. With astral projection and spirit evocation its easy to back out of the experience when things start getting intense.

Its a little hard to overcome a fear that is based on the entire universe being a test and the outcome is pre-determined no matter what because of past choices you cant alter.

Last night I could not get to sleep without going into sleep paralysis. I kept feeling it happen and waking up. But ended up in one of the best out of body experiences I have had.

In that scenario I end up giving into astonishment and I get satisfied with the experience from just moving 10 feet or so.  My goal should be to go to the moon and beyond, or enter alternate dimensions. I just get so excited over the simplest OBE that I loose track of my goals.
