NEW Roaster Pasteurization Tek(?)!!!
    #18457008 -

Okay, this might not be new but I haven't seen it here. Here goes:

You will need:

1) A large electric roaster, preferably one with a rack

2) Two aluminum lasagna pans

3) Two small binder clips or the equivalent

Procedure:

1) Put your manure or whatever into one pan. Pile it up. Here's what 10 quarts of manure looks like:

2) Use the second pan as a lid. A small binder clip on either end works great to hold the pans together (like a dummy I omitted them from the photos).

3) Place the pans in the roaster (this is where it helps to have a rack) and fill the roaster with water to about 1/2" below the lip of the bottom pan. Remove the pans.

4) Turn the roaster on to 160 degrees or whatever you prefer, cover the roaster and wait 15 to 20 minutes. Once the water comes to your desired temperature put your pans back in.

Cover the roaster and give it time for the water temperature to return to your desired temperature. Then give it a couple of more hours until the center of your medium is at the desired temperature. Your time will vary according the size and model of your roaster. Once it's at the right temperature you're done. Remove the pans and let them cool.

I haven't actually done this yet (was gonna do it today -- might still do it tonight) but it is fool-proof. I say this because I've done tons of lab work. As long as the water bath remains at the temperature you want to pasteurize at nothing will get too hot (unless pasteurization induces some exothermic reaction that I'm not aware of) and get anywhere near sterilization. According to the Laws of Thermodynamics nothing can get any warmer that the water bath.

The only thing that can possibly screw this up is a bad quality thermostat that allowed pretty wide temperature swings in your roaster. Cramming the pans into too small a roaster might also cause problems.

So that's my plan. It looks the cleanest and easiest way for up to 10 quarts and I can't see anything going wrong with it. But I'd appreciate any suggestions on how to improve on it or what could possibly be wrong with the technique.

Since I just learned how to post pics, here's some more of the pans:

I have a similar tek on here, difference is that I use Ziploc bags for coir to use in monotubs.  I like the tray, if I ever do a greenhouse I'll try it your way.

Let us know after you try it, how long it took to complete. I like the idea, I plan to just use a bunch of quart jars so they can all reach temp faster.

Here is my tek with the outcome, I've used a similar method for almost all of my tubs with no contamination.
