Stro's Still Air Box

Step 1: Don't complicate things

Step 2: Buy a clear plastic container making sure that it is big enough for you to work in, the bigger the better, with in reason of course, the one depicted is 73 qts.

Step 3: Draw circles (future arm holes), use a guide like coffee can.

Step 4: Heat a blade to cut the circles out creating arm holes and repeat as necessary when cutting holes.

Step 6: Cut plastic flap out of something for a dust cover, I used a shower curtain and tape.

I did cut a large hole in the top and tape some clear plastic over it as a viewing window but honestly I don' really use it. I just slide the lid forward a little bit to make a gap large enough for me to see through. I do all sorts of stuff in this box with a very small contam rate.

I do all the work using this box wearing latex glove, generally speaking when I remove both hands and arms from the box, I coat said hands and arms with alcohol before re-entering.

This is the first time I've seen a flap covering the holes. . . interesting.

:oldthread:

Bod made everything clear already.
A SAB is just a flipped-over large plastic box with two holes, nothing more.
Don´t overcomplicate it, it´s based on physics, not rocket science

Have a look here mate.

I do like the smaller armholes on Sto's box.

(Not for ape sized forearms though.)

Tight holes aren´t a benefit here mate

Be as comfortable with the size as you can, mine are 7" in diameter.
You don´t want to scratch around at the edges.
If you work with bare forearms, you´ll bring dead skin particles into movement.
Also everything that lands on your clothes (if you wear).

But that´s just me doing it that way.
As always, if it works, it works

:whathesaid: My arm holes are way too small and it is a pain in the dick. I'm going to size them appropriately here in the next week or so.

So far the issues I have found with small holes: difficult to get grain jars and agar bottles in/out smoothly, very limited range of motion, scraping my forearms against the sides no matter what I'm doing, 'plugging' the hole by accident with my forearm creating an air current inside the SAB (although I really haven't seen any contamination issues with this at this point. I do know it IS an issue though), it's hard to reach stuff when you have a lot of projects going on (I guess this is covered by the lack of mobility range).

Edit: I almost forgot to mention how fucking uncomfortable it is to work in a SAB with small holes!

Quit putting your dick in there!

I hear you and goatrider and appreciate the advice.
I'm sure that my skinny arms don't need the 6-7" that
are often pictured but maybe my 4" holes will prove
to be too small.
