Exactly ! it's also a strange and common misconception that
Meditating involves obsessing/ruminating over your
thoughts n feelings. My Psychologist and Psychiatrists recently
told me to stop meditating since they thought I would simply
"dwell" on my problems and feel worse. Quite the contrary
meditation is not about "dwelling" on anything, it's about
letting go...un-attached, non-judgemental awareness.
The only thing that's "obsessive" about Meditation and a
Buddhist lifestyle is Awareness, i.e. to be Mindful in
an "effortless" manner. Not to be confused with a vigilant
watchfulness. The idea is to retrain the mind so that
mindfulness, our natural state, is restored (as opposed to
the trance-like dream world of constant thought/labeling/projections
that we tend to live in).

Thats not a very accurate description of Buddism. The idea is to stop thinking(obsessing) about ones life. You know like clear your mind, stop clinging to desire. Focus on the moment and not the constant chatter of the mind.
What your describing sounds more like psychoanalysis.



But thats not so much the reality of it, at least not for most buddhist's....or at least not western one's.

AHAHAH. Alright alright. Well still,like i said...buddhism, among other religions, started out with a few philosophical fellow's isolating themselve's from the rest of the world and determining where the real value of lifeis.

my psych teacher told me that a major in philosophy was actually pretty useful if you got a minor in something that you're interested, I never asked her reasoning behind it, but she was pretty smart :P

Some examples are university professors, bioethicists, consultants for social planning, environmental ethics, authors, and of course cult leaders.  :devil:

what do bioethicists do?  attend conferences? 

murex- I think buddha was against asceticism. 

faaip_de_oiad- ok, I had to type out your handle, so you've go to tell me where you got it. or did you make it up?  anyway, yeah, philosophy is a good major for learning how to think.  unfortunately, it seems that thinking isn't very important in most professions.  :frown:
it's good for law school though.

The person depicted by fat Buddha figures has a chinese face. It's not a picture of the historical Buddha from India (Shakyamuni Buddha), but of Hotei, who is a chinese character that corresponds to the same archetypical personality as our Santa Claus. Some buddhists identify Hotei with an incarnation of a future Buddha (Maitreya Buddha).

Shakyamuni Buddha starved himself for a while during the six years he spent following all sorts of cults, but he resumed eating normally just before his enlightenment.
