What is this beetle on Ganoderma tsugae?
    #18350233 -

Hello All,

In my woods, I have a couple beautious patches of Ganoderma tsugae fruiting from hemlocks.  On and around them are these black and red beetles which my entomophile friend suggests is a species of burying beetle(genus Nicrophorus).  I would like to know what the ecological niche of the beetle is and if it poses any threat to the mushroom.  They appear to have eaten the majority of a small mushroom on one tree and I'm worried for the rest of the crop.  I like to tread softly on the biosphere, so I've been flicking them off the mushrooms, does anyone think I should increase my mushroom defense to squashing the baggards?

It's Carrion beetle's, they typically prefer rotting flesh but seem to be enjoying your excellent Ganoderma find.
Or they're just using it as a sex pad.

Great find. Will you be cloning them. If not I would definitely eat them.I am talking about the mushrooms not the beetles.

Nice reishi!

The beetles are Megalodacne heros beetles, and yes, they will eat your mushrooms.

Smash 'em!  That's a nice Reishi find.  Beetles can make more beetles.

That is a great idea!  G. tsugae grows on hemlock, what substrates do you suppose would be suitable?  I currently have various hardwood chips, straw and rye.  Do ya think I'd be able to find hemlock chips?

I don't know anything about hemlock chips. I do know that if you wanted to clone that strain than you would need agar and some petri-dishes.You could try just putting tissue samples in grains but if the sample has any mold or bacteria spores on it then it will contaminate. At least with agar you can isolate away from that.

those are the fuckers that have invaded my oyster logs!  They're vicious and they lay their larvae on the gills.  Hopefully they are not in my reishis!

I just cloned some tsugae, one out of the four was totally contaminant free!  I'm on vacay right now but when I left it was turning yellow in the middle, sort of how reishi turns red.  I'm not sure if this is desirable, but it's cool to preserve local biodiversity.  Especially since i'm gonna harvest some of the monster wild reishi that were growing!
