Ganoderma tsugae
    #20054129 -

So has anyone here had any real success with cultivating Ganoderma tsugae. I have seen a few threads with mixed results. Well today I finally came across some G.tsugae. Oddly or awesomely enough I found it in the same town within a mile or so of where I found my Ganoderma resinaceum. This town is loaded with reishi. But I digress, so I found several conks coming out of a hemlock tree up on the edge of a ravine. They are last years remains and don't look all too inviting, but that's alright I know where the tree is and can go back later in the year when I am back in town.

There is an incredible amount of insect damage but there are large areas of white flesh, so I think I can pretty easily pull some tissue out there for a culture. I will try to grow it on a variety of substrates as well as make up a bunch of dowels and inoculate a bunch of fallen logs in a pine forest near my home. This is a very stunning mushroom.

Tsugae colonizes quick and easily but getting it to pin may be difficult, I never was able to and I know someone else on here had the same problem.  Not sure if it needs some kind of bacteria or what

They're just starting to pin here so I may get another clone and give it a shot again if I have time, let me know if you have any success!

my clone last year grew to about the size of a quarter and called it quits.  maybe it needs some special agar?  a quick glance at Aloha's culture bank calls for PDY or MEPYAC

which apparently is Malt Extract with Yeast, Peptone, and Activated Carbon

Maybe this would be a good opportunity to try starting from spore. The conk I brought back has a dusting of spores on it, though I am sure getting those cleaned up on agar would be a nightmare given the condition it is in. But a more varied set of genetics, maybe one of them would be willing to put out in the conditions given to it.

It's in some pretty bad shape but I have gotten successful cultures from worse, it is mostly insect damage, plenty of solid chunks of flesh to work with.

I'm just excited to have found my first tsugae. And now I know where to look later in the year for wild harvest.

I don't see any hope for that.  Wait until they pop this year and clone from the white leading edge of the growth.

If you get a good fruiting strain, it fruits easily on paper or wood.  The pics below are all G tsugae.

Nice!  I'll have to try again and see if a different clone will work.
