shroomer9:While contaminants can come from a variety of sources, you might be having a problem because your innoculation area isn't sterile enough -- though you really can't say for sure. Why not try the oven tek and see if you get better results? Are you using the general PF/MMGG tek overall? Do you sterilize your jars with a pressure canner? good luck c

My GUESS would be yes shroomer9. Thats a very fragile part of the process (inoculation), and you have to be somewhat sterile. Lysol is a cultivators best friend. What I done is, I cut off the top and bottom from a box (cardboard) and taped saran wrap on top of it. I also cut arm holes in the side of it. I lay the box on my Bar, spray lysol inside of it and let it settle. Following that, I put in the jar and syringe, and work from that small controlled STERILE enviroment. I have never had a problem with contams (at that stage) or anything of the such. The first time I inoculated I used the oven tek. The heat killed my spores and I only got 1 out of 10 jars colonizing. So if you do that, be carefull. Alot of people LIVE by the oven tek and swear its the best and easiest way to go, but I don't like it and don't recommend it to anyone. So, good luck with what ever you choose to do.

I am using the pf tek, but i don't have a pressure canner. pappakaps how hot did you put the oven to when you did use the oven tek and had some problems? i've heard about 200 is a good temperature. does anyone have good results (not killing spores) with the oven tek 100% of the time? if so please tell me your process? thanks

when you use the oven tek your not keeping shit in the oven your only working with the oven open its not going to kill your spores think about it when your cooking in the oven open it and the hot air that comes out rises and this is what keeps the contaminants away the air rising keeping them away from your jars when your done with your innoculation put your jars in an incubator or any clean warm place to keep them at the right temp. around 80 degrees will be fine pf even suggests that colder temps will be fine it will just take longer for full colonization anyhow if you keep your tools and materials clean you should be fine without a pressure cooker/canner i have had good sucess with steam/boil ala pf tek just use your head and if you still have problems keep trying dont give up the hawk has some tips on his sight for cleaning and sterilizeing so check it out i hope this clears a few things up for you be on the lookout for a pressure canner /cooker you can use better substates with one but get the pf tek down good a few times first then move on to diff./better substrate recipes (pressure canner/cooker needed)

If you are using the oven tek, you need to make sure that your oven temp stays very low. The oven should be set on the lowest warm setting, no higher than 120'. Keep a thermometer on the rack to make sure the temp does not creep up too high. As long as there is warm air rising up you're doing fine. My oven in my last house never went lower than about 150'. I had it melt some agar plates before I decided that I could not use the oven tek at those temps.------------------ When the going gets weird, the weird get wired.
