dude powerviolence ain't dead at all. i mean all the original bands will tell you (and be right) that POWERVIOLENCE ISN'T EVEN A FUCKIN' GENRE, WE JUST CAME UP WITH IT BECAUSE THERE WERE LIKE 5 OR SO BANDS ON THE WEST COAST IN THE LATE 80'S/EARLY 90'S THAT PLAYED SHORT FAST SONGS AND WERE FRIENDS.

seriously though, those bands would be man is the bastard, crossed out, capitalist casualties, no comment...can't think of who else off the top of my head but MITB lists them in this song:

^i mean, man is the bastard and all their related subprojects (charred remains, neanderthal, pissed happy children, bastard noise, etc.) are just in a genre all their own if you ask me. NOBODY sounds like them, and as far as i know nobody's even tried. i'll post some stuff by the other bands so you can see that even though there are certain elements they share in common, the label "power violence" only came about because they were like-minded bands that made contact since the scene for their styles/influences of music was basically nonexistent at the time:

man is the bastard - "mancruel" (full LP)

^note: the opening track "atomic clock" is an over 3 minute long noise  intro, it's cool but if you wanna get straight to the music you can skip to 3:30. M.I.T.B. were kind of infamous for having long, nearly-unlistenable noise tracks in the middle of their albums at times.

crossed out - crossed out (full EP)

^these guys were from encinitas, so being a san diego band might make me biased toward them, but in my opinion they were one of the most badass, pissed off sounding bands since the mighty INFEST.

no comment - downsided (full EP)

capitalist casualties - raised ignorant (full EP)

Capitalist Casualties.

:manofapproval:

I have myself listening to Rotten Sound's "Murderworks" again, now.
Kai Hahto's another one of my favourite drummers, big role model.

haha sorry my last post explaining the history of west coast powerviolence totally got immediately derailed from what i was originally going to say - there are plenty of good PV style bands around these days. i just saw a band called acXdc (standing for Anti-Christ Demon Core) a few weeks ago and even though they've only put out two 7"s they're really really good. check it out yourself if you don't believe me:

acXdc - he had it coming EP

acXdc - the second coming EP

i also saw iron lung recently, who are almost like the inverse of man is the bastard, where instead of having no guitar and two basses, they have no bassist and just a drummer and guitarist. they recently put out a new record that they were touring for and you can hear riiiight here:

iron lung - white glove test LP (the artwork is sick too am i right?)

Damn dude. That's fucking good stuff.
I'm working through the first acXdc vid now, really diggin' it.

I'd heard of Iron Lung already. Kind of forgot about them until you mentioned it.
And we turned another metal thread into a PV/Grind thread.

Aural Butchery is one of my all-time favourite pieces of music. That, and Reek of Putrefaction by Carcass.
Not sure how I'd feel about anyone covering that, but it could be cool.

of course, of course! not actually one i would say is near the top of the heap when it comes to that handful of OG bands, but since they all ripped immensely that doesn't mean a thing, they kick major ass.

also i know i've already commended you for this but I FUCKING LOVE SORE THROAT.

by the way here's neanderthal, who were a pre-man is the bastard group that were become man is the bastard:

neanderthal - "fighting music" EP

^if you like yer shit raw you'll dig it. and there's guitar!

and for those who don't know infest, you basically MUST hear infest before you can have any idea, context, or just reference point for where this music comes from and what it's objectives are. they predated these "PV" bands but basically created the basis for it just by recording some of the most pissed off hardcore you'll ever hear in your life. seriously listen to this shit if you haven't:

infest - "slave" EP

^holy grail shit right here.

:greenthumb: indeed :greenthumb:

seriously though powerviolence is far from dead, even if the originators of it are mostly sick of people using the name like a genre label. i'll think of a few more newer bands and throw 'em up for ya, but in the meantime check out the band of some friends of mine that play powerviolence. they really have their shit together and sound real good, and tight...like i'm not just linking you to some shit local garage band in a lame attempt to get them exposure or website hits, if you like this music you'll enjoy them:

impulse - chula violence EP

^they're good guys too, a great band to catch at a house show just for the energy alone. i feel like they got what it takes to make it quote-unquote "big"...as "big" as a band can ever expect to get playing this music, i obviously mean.

Even though we aren't even discussing the tour anymore I'm quite pleased with how this thread is turning out. I'm always down to listen to other bands in the extreme underground.

No one's mentioned Maruta yet, what do you guys think about em?

May seem like a dumb question, but as a fan of music, particularly of the angry kind, how did you come to find these bands? I have only heard of like 2 or 3 out of the bunch you've been mentioning.
I wanna expand my horizons a bit. True, CC is "mainstream" in the underground. But it exposed me to Gorguts, Disgorge, Portal, Blut Aus Nord and other lesser known bands.
With grind, I feel like I've completely missed out on a shit ton of bands. Do you find them on youtube, tape trading, word of mouth or what? Genuinely intrigued by all these gems you've listed.

Word of mouth, local scenes, lurking around different music forums, all sorts of shit. I can throw together a list of good grind/goregrind sometime, if you're interested.
Pigasus could definitely do a good one, too. Dude's got the best musical tastes in obscure extreme subgenres that I've ever seen.

Alright cool. Yeah I feel myself getting bored going with the standard kinda shit. I know there's an awesome world outside of my field of vision, but with literally zero of my friends even remotely into the style it's very difficult to find new, exciting art. The last breakthrough I had was finding Blut Aus Nord.
The Work Which Transforms God is their most cited but I really like "MoRT". Very dissonant, the story goes that they used fretless guitars played on their laps and just did hammer on pull off kinda shit.

Anyways I really appreciated all the new sounds and flavors. Feel free to recommend any other favs for this newbie. :pipesmoke:

One of my favourites; Extreme Noise Terror.

Carcass. One of the best goregrind albums ever.

The County Medical Examiners.

Circle of Dead Children. This is really deathgrind, but whatever. still kick ass.

Agoraphobic Nosebleed. Quintessential grindcore from the late 90's.

Pig Destroyer. Interesting lyrical take on the genre. Look up the lyrics sometime. Kind of grotesque, even for the genre.
I'd say skip to 1:21 for music, but the intro really sets the tone for the entire album.

Rotten Sound. Finnish goregrind. Exemplar album from the genre, Murderworks.

Fuck the Facts. A more modern interpretation of the genre.

Ed Gein. Funny album title, more along the lines of mathcore.

Agathocles. I have nothing to say about these guys besides if you listen to nothing else on the list, make it this.

Assück. Another early, important figure in the grindcore scene.

Impetigo. These guys have tried a few different sounds, but they had a solid grindcore sound for a few of their releases.

Last Days of Humanity. Dutch grindcore, exceptionally rough in a rough genre.

Naked City. Have fun with this one. Jazz meets grindcore. Some of the craziest sax playing you'll hear.

Nasum. Now-defunct grindcore band, put out a few really awesome albums.

Terrorizer. Another earlier example of the genre. Good stuff.

Haemorrhage. More goregrind.

Xysma.

I'll throw together some more later. That should keep you jammin' for a minute or two.

oh man, basically a combination of all of those things (except tape trading), coupled with an insatiable appetite for as much of this music as i can possibly find. it's easier these days obviously than it has ever been with the advent of the internet. back in the day you would have HAD to find these things via tape trading, in fact thats how all of the guys from the biggest names in death metal and grindcore originally did it. i learned all about that reading "choosing death: the unlikely history of death metal and grindcore" which both taught me a lot about the culture of underground extreme music in its mid/late 80s to the early 90s heyday, and even introduced me to a handful of bands i hadn't yet heard of. highly recommended.

but anyway yeah, word of mouth through my circle of friends IRL who are into similarly extreme stuff & likeminded internet penpals, hitting up shows whenever possible...honestly shit would've been hard for a guy like me back in the tape-trading days. but if you're interested at all in learning about more bands of these varieties, feel more than free to :pm: me anytime, and that goes for anybody. the only thing i enjoy more than playing, listening to, or discovering new music is to be able to introduce music i've discovered to someone who hasn't heard it and might enjoy it themselves...it's kind of my thing, basically. also, through all the years i've been posting here, there's barely anybody that i regular exchange :pm:'s with so it wouldn't be a bother at all. :tripping:

Yeah, the internet has been monumental in helping these really far-out subgenres gain some momentum and exposure.
Hell, I probably would not have heard of a quarter of the bands I posted earlier without it.

I'm sure the current metal flavour, that deathcore shit, would have shaped far different if MySpace and Youtube didn't help the Southwest US spread the sound.

well p'shaw. to be honest that's basically the best compliment i could hope to receive though. you've got some damn good taste yerself there buddy, i must say.

especially on the shroomery, you and a small handful of others are the only ones i see in metal/grind threads that actually post good shit, so kudos right back at you. :fasted:

did you happen to check out that EP i posted by my friends local powerviolence band? if so, watcha think? i honestly think they've got it goin' on, and i say that as objectively as i possible can.

hell yeah, they have a great live presence, especially the singer nick. he's got the whole intense-as-fuck and pissed-at-the-world thing down pat, the way any good hardcore/powerviolence frontman should. here's a video of 'em playing in a crowded tattoo parlor because they got kicked out of the original venue (a mexican restaurant with a whole stage area set aside) because some bitch that owned a nail salon next door complained. so they moved the show to a tattoo parlor down the street with chill owners. anyway despite the lack of ability to mosh in such a cramped space (even knowing this it might look like the crowd is being lame and not moving enough, but understand that this was out of respect for the owners of the tattoo parlor for letting us have the show there, didn't even want to start pushing the envelope for fear of knocking over some piece of expensive shit), this vid gives you an idea of their live energy. [/dickriding]:

here's also a video of another friend of mine's band from the same show. they don't have their shit together quite as much in the way of having put out actual recordings and stuff but they're pretty good too, and i think they've got potential:
