"It will never go away," seems to be what people who don't want to discuss it or address their own hypocrisy often say. (not that I'm accusing you of either of those things) :shrug: Of course it will never be eradicated fully but that doesn't mean we should be okay with blatant sexist or racist remarks. The only reason we have made so much progress in these arenas is because of people pointing out the ignorance and trying to push a more logical approach.

In America a lot of people still would not be okay with a woman president simply because of her gender (a recent figure I found said at least 30% of Americans feel this way). Think of the comments about Hillary Clinton, they're almost all about her appearance rather than things that actually matter. We have a long way left to go, but yes we have made some incredible progress and those are great examples.

Man if  you think thats bad you should have heard what people were saying about Obama where i'm from.


I have a proffesor that was telling me when the US established the Iraqi government they required that 20% of it be made up of women. I guess the US has never even been close to that number. I am really against quotas and think they are more racist/sexist than just letting things flow like normal.

Well I think in Iraq it was necessary to instate a quota because otherwise the men would subjugate the women and bar them from holding office (either officially or through violence) like they always do over there.

How so? :confused: I realize my wording seems to be a bit overgeneralizing and whatnot, but in a lot of the middle east women's rights vary from nonexistent to passable.

Because the US is projecting its values, that they themselves cannot even live up too, upon another nation based on preconceived notions about the region and religion as a whole.

Islam actually teaches some things Feminists around here would get behind(im assuming). The reason for everything but the hands and face being covered is because people used to harass and molest Muhammad's wives and daughters so they started covering up. They teach that men cannot control their impulses therefore women should cover up to avoid rape, harassment, etc.  Its optional in most places anyway, and even if a western women(white american) were to go to marakesh or something without a shaw and modestly dressed they would get felt up catt calls etc.

Well I think we should be fighting for women's rights in the middle east, especially when a little girl gets shot for expressing a desire to go to school and to help other girls do the same. That being said, we're never going to be perfect in our own values but that doesn't mean we don't have a responsibility to prevent or help to change/prevent heinous human rights violations.

Oh that's not even the beginning of why they are pissed at us, I'd say the raping of their resources and killing of innocents is way more important.
