Removing phrases and words from my personal vocabulary
    #18016699 -

I want to eliminate the certain words or phrases from my normal conversation vocabulary.

Basically i'm trying to stop myself from using curse words or saying something like " I seen.." and other stupid stuff like that.  Its unconscious at this point.

Has anyone ever done something like this and how would one go about it?

I've started to notice I always say these words "pretty, just, kind of, somewhat, really." I don't know if I should stop saying them or not, it annoys me that I say them so much though.

I have a professor that says "out there" or just "there" after almost every statement he says.  I have tallied the times he says it in a 50 minute class and got to like 45.

But I guess just try and catch yourself as you are saying it or after, and then after long enough your brain will be able to detect it before you actually say the word and might be able to stop yourself/say something else.

Burn yourself with a cigarette each time you utter one of the phrases or words you want to eliminate.

i have done this with the word "like"

basically my brother just would make fun of me for saying it so much and i had to stop saying it or he would interrupt me. if you talk to your friends about it, given they actually listen to what you have to say, it can be a lot of help for someone else to point it out. give your bro permission to butt into your conversations and you can weed out the none sense vocab in a few days.

Find words to replace them with.

I had to stop using some words because they would catch on in friend circles..
it'd get annoying

i think the most annoying is using a word that has no meaning in the context of the conversation. like, when should we like smoke a bowl? it just makes it hard to listen to people who don't think about what they are going to say completely before talking so they use fluff words while they are thinking about what real words to say.
