Well, you are going to run into the problem where hard evidence and facts run out and are replaced by mere speculation.  Similar to the line between science and religion.  We can speculate that we are really batteries for an alien speices living in the matrix.  However, its unlikely.

History is one of the best way sto learn about the future.  Nature is very predictable over long periods of time especially when you have a decent understanding of your own species timeline. Obviously its not 100% accurate or anything, but you have to base on SOEMTHING or everything we did would just be one giant guess. :smile:

As to people living longer today than ever before:

On average, people in developed nations live much longer now than at any time since the agricultural revolution. However, the longest living people (on average) are old Okinawans, who had a heathy diet, invented karate, and were poor as dirt. Modern medicine isn't what enables people to live to 120; it takes good genes, a low-calorie diet, and an active lifestyle. In otherwords, I'll be lucky to see 80.

well, it is given to man to live 3 score and 10...
70 years was considered a full life back in biblical times...
the "average" lifespan is increasing because all those children who would have died during childbirth or during early childhood now live to reach adulthood & even old age...

in his booklet "the encyclopedia of sex drugs and aphrodesiacs" adam gottlieb states that there was some old chinese fellow who lived to be like 256 years old... grew his own food, consumed powerful herbs like ginseng & fo ti tieng & gotu kola, & practices tranquility of mind...
there are a fair number of centenarians, but the oldest human (documnted or not) is prolly less than 130 years old...

(unless a breeding program like "the howard families" project is running now; but since it is private, and the particpants were instructed to enter 'the masquerade' when the government started getting too nosy, well, we may not know about that for quite some time; see heinlein's works: methuselah's children, time enough for love, the number of the beast, the cat who walks through walls, & to sail beyond the sunset, for info on a (fictional) breeding program for long-lifers...)

ummmm, now for the real world... well, genetics may indeed have a part in setting limits to how long a person can live; environmental factors will certainly have an effect on how long a person will live...

there may be herbs & dietary choices & life-extension therapies to extend the healthy funtioning of a human being up to their genetic limits --- see adam gottlieb's excellent book _the secrets of life extension_ for detailed information on how to "square the curve" ...

i grow my own food (at least 60-70% of it, 100% within 3 years)and eat only herb medicine, i prolly get older than you all., hell i gonna hang out with your great great great grandchildren :grin:

Herbs and such might be ok, but the two major keys to living a LONG time are:

Low-calorie diet, much lower than is necessary to keep the weight off. This is backed up by studies on genetically uniform mice and rats, who can double their expected lifespan with extremely restricted diets, and by the fact that today's old Okinawans have a diet traditionally low in calories - they were conquered by the Japanese and were very poor for many years. Of course, a diet should have all the necessary vitimans and minerals.

Active lifestyle, with proper excersize. The Okinawans invented Karate, and continued to practice it at advanced ages.


Ignoring the possibility of a technical advance that extends the maxiumum life of a person, todays Okinawans are unlikely to make it to their progenitors great ages - they are too rich and lazy.

Most Americans, myself included, have plenty of food and sedentary lifestyles. So, we're unlikely to make it to 120. Plus, I have a family history of lung cancer and heart disease, which isn't a real good sign.


As far as old texts giving the life span of a man, I remember reading a translated Indian philosophical text giving the target of 100 years. Also, the typical maximum age of people fell dramatically with the agricultural revolution, as the quality of peoples diets fell.

Civilization allows many more people to be alive at once, but so far hasn't increased the amount of time a single person may live.

There are many people who claim to be that old, but often these are people who lied about their age to go into the military, and so are younger than they claim to be. As for the Bible, I'd prefer to talk about actual history and not fiction.

but i hope to do that some day as well, shriek... first gonna travel the globe across a few times, figure out where to settle down, and then work on self-sufficiency.
