In what other manner would his hypothesis be proven or dismissed?

How is that idea any less viable than the idea that consciousness is generated ad-hoc by localized systems? Again, I have seen no evidence favoring either possibility. One is more parsimonious if you believe in God, the other is if you don't. There are many things which have been disproved by science but God is not one of them.

I had no idea who these guys were, but after reading their bios, it seems perfectly reasonable that TED would remove their talks. I'm sure TED has some standards, including not promoting speakers who make shit up and pretend it is real science.

I'm not arguing that it's less viable. I like the idea, he does back it up with scientific studies, and he raises other interesting points in his video as well. Regardless, no consensus or understanding on consciousness (or any other topic) is going to come from not skeptically analyzing both claims. Challenging something skeptically is not the same as throwing it out. If it's got any validity, a skeptical analysis will bring it to light. This is the true value of skepticism and I'm confused as to why you think it should not be applied in this case?

It's true that science has not disproven god and perhaps never will, but it has certainly minimized the probability and the necessity that he/she/it exists. It has overwhelmingly disproven the effectiveness of prayer, but of course not all believers in god believe in a personal one.

I'm not a fan of either Hancock or Sheldrake, but completely disavowing yourself from unpopular ideas does not constitute "skepticism" in its virtuous form. That is what TED has done.

How has the ontological argument for the existence of God been "minimized" in its "probability"? :curbyourenthusiasm:

It has nothing to do with their ideas being unpopular (clearly, they are popular in some circles). It has to do with the completely fraudulent type of pseudoscience they purvey.

This whole story has me scratching my head.

For one thing, why the hell did TED feature Graham Hancock? I mean, Graham Hancock? Graham Hancock? You expect him to get up there and say something that isn't batshit crazy?

I sincerely object to that statement.

Graham Hancock is a man of integrity and intellectual pursuit, courageous even when it flies in the face of the establishment and their dogmatic materialist scientific worldview.

He started his career as a journalist for The Economist. When I Africa he heard about the claim of the Ethiopians that in  some chapel they kept the Arch of the Covenant, a religious artefact mentione din the bible. He was curious and started to investigate this claim. He wrote a book about it. Because of that research he got interested in the ancient world and started to investigate ancient Egypt among things. From there on he pursued solving some of the questions and paradigms that Egyptology would violently refuse to consider. He joine dup with people like Robert Schoch, Robert Bauval and Anthony West and launched some credible theories on our ancient civilizations.

By that time he got into a groove of being opposed by mainstream science whom he challenged and was considered a pseudo-archaeologist. But when you get into that position your mindset changes. It does something to you and your eyes are opened to this questionable and eerie dogmatic persuasion of scientists. At some point he dedided that he had done all he could to put his questions and challenges on the map. And then he moved on. And he became interested in psychedelics.

Graham Hancock can be considered one of 'us'. He came to...'awakening' through a unique path of being targeted and ridiculed, the same denunciation psychedelic people have to endure, both by government and the law and those who have been indoctrinated to believe we are all just 'druggies'. So I don't see why you would qualify Graham Hancock the way you do.

He has become an intelligent spokesperson for the value of psychedelic use for personal growth. He is a moral man gaining more respect by the day currently from me and many others. Where McKenna stopped, he leaves off. McKenna pleaded for change in our culture, our societies, but Hancock says what it is about: a human rights  issue.

Quote:
Of course, the anger over a situation like this is like striking the hornet's nest-- all those self-important nerds come out of their study to comment on what science is and isn't, how pseudoscientific Hancock is, :blah:. God forbid anybody have a fucking imagination in their approach to a problem that has confounded science since its inception.

Clearly you do not grasp the implications of TED's  actions.

Personally I am deeply disturbed by this secret scientific advisory board. These people stab at their opponents from behind the veil TED places around them and I sure like to know who this immoral cowardly bastards are.

That's exactly what happened here, only they neglected to realize that Graham Hancock would incite his mass of followers to cry censorship. When they demanded a response, TED's bloggers gave a shitty one, which was quickly picked apart.

Akira - I'd debate you on the fact that pseudoscience is highly damaging and has caused the deaths of many people, but don't really care to do that since I don't believe it would change your mind or any of our audiences, given the nature of this website.

While these talks certainly won't 'bludgeon the scientific community,' to assert that they cannot hurt TED's reputation is preposterous. Youtube videos have destroyed the reputation of many individuals and businesses. If Science Daily started publishing articles on the use of electromagnetic devices in the hunt for ghosts, I would find a better source for contemporary science news. TED is no different and certainly not immune to having it's reputation hurt, otherwise they wouldn't be defending it as hard as they are right now.

While I think that Hancock's video was removed for unpalatable reasons, he is really pushing the sensationalism of this whole thing to a next level, no doubt squeezing every ounce of much needed credibility out of this debacle. The implication that his video and the discussions surrounding it deserve more than two weeks of TED's full attention is self-entitled garbage. He should be happy that TED has garnered him any attention at all, if it weren't for this he'd just be another guy rattling on about Atlantis, the Face on Mars and the subjective values of psychedelics. Not only that but it only made sense for TED to give each video it's own debate forum, it was a mess trying to figure out whether each commenter was referring to Sheldrake's vid or Hancock's. Graham is trying to make it appear on his facebook page that TED made the move to bury him even deeper. Sensationalism, plain and simple.

Basically you are saying that Hancock should fight alone. That he cannot relay his predicament to others because that would "incite" his 'followers'. He should, according to your argument, keep things quiet and is personally responsible for how his 'followers' choose to respond. The same argument is used by one of the TED people in the comments. That Hancock's  view on Ayahuasca might be resulting in  some kid flying off to the Amazon to drink Ayahuasca' and that Hacock would be irresponsible somehow.

I am certain that the pope many hundreds of years ago would call it 'pseudo-science' when some obviously mistaken person said the Earth orbited the sun by looking at the phases of Venus.

The use of the word 'sensationalism' is preposterous in describing what is happening. People have the right to free speech and in this day and afe on the internet people WILL share if they are upset. I don't see any proof that Hancock is 'sensationalist' or using any strategy at all apart from honestly sharing that he is being attacked basically for his point of view, by people from this scientific advisory board, which seems to act as an unseen inquisition. If he would feel slandered, he has the right to show that.

Mentioning Atlantis is totally absurd in this discussion. It is a sleazy tactic to drag Hancock in the dirt by associating him with something that has nothing to do with the speech he have on TEDx. It is, again, the same tactic used to justify the removal of his speech. And I do not see how Hancock can be held responsible for the format in which the discussion was poured and that TED's  website functionality is such that they throw both Hancock and Sheldrake in together.

They are doing ever fucking thing wrong and I don't think it is only just blatant incompetence but also a willful strategy to undermine and confuse the situation.

No it's not. Perhaps you should watch the videos and read the comments and discussions before making such statements. If they had "completely disavowed" themselves from it they would not be hosting it on their blog and giving more attention to these videos than they do to anybody elses.

How has the ontological argument for the existence of God been "minimized" in its "probability"? :curbyourenthusiasm:

It's mainly the a posteriori arguments for god that have been minimized in probability, but the ontological argument for god is not without rational, logical criticism either. As Kant pointed out, the ontological argument relies on the assumption that existence is more perfect than nonexistence. This is not a given truth. When you use the logic of the ontological argument against itself it looks like this:

The creation of the world is the most marvelous achievement imaginable.

The merit of an achievement is the product of (a) its intrinsic quality, and (b) the ability of its creator.

The greater the disability (or handicap) of the creator, the more impressive the achievement.

The most formidable handicap for a creator would be non-existence.

Therefore if we suppose that the universe is the product of an existent creator we can conceive a greater being - namely, one who created everything while not existing.

An existing God therefore would not be a being greater than which a greater cannot be conceived because an even more formidable and incredible creator would be a God which did not exist. Ergo:
God does not exist.

The ontological argument is no more convincing of god's existence than the above is convincing of his nonexistence. Both are a futile effort of assumptive mental masturbation.

They should never have given this lunatic an invite.  Once they did, however; I think they should extend to him all the benefits implied in the invite.  I don't know if that was or wasn't done by still hosting his video, but the guy's a fruitcake and an embarrasment whether or not he's speaking with TED so I'm sure its of little moment to him.

ted is a private organization. it isn't illegal to censor people - for whatever reason - if you're a private organization. that's fine if you don't like it, but it is completely within their right to control the content that is associated with their brand.

and how are TED talkers not making things up? aren't they interpreting and researching data sets and making predictions, and then talking about where future scientific endeavors are heading?
