My friends rent situation
    #17973334 -

My friend has been renting an appartement in the ghetto.  His rent is 500$ a month.  He did not sign a lease.

Heres the current situation:

He hasnt paid rent in about 4 months and is planning on moving out next week, hes already mostly moved out.  The landlord hasnt said anything about the late rent, but the other day the landlords buddy was coming out of the upstairs appartement as my friend was entering his.

THe landlords buddy told my friend that the landlord was pissed and wanted his money, and said if he didnt pay the past due rent the landlord would take him to court for it.  Now the landlord has no information about my friend, hes been paying the rent in cash before that, the landlord has no social security number, no date of birth, and no real way to find out who my friend is.  He just has his name.

Does my friend have anything to worry about?  He was thinking about giving the landlord 800$ once he hands in his key next week.  Should he even do that?  Can the landlord take him to court without having any identifying information about my friend?

Meh I'd give the money just because it is the right thing to do. Technically speaking though if there's nothing written saying that he's going to pay rent, he never agreed to pay rent. I'm not a lawyer though so idk if an oral agreement constitutes a contract or something but I'd assume there's not much the guy could do, if he was to pissed I'm sure he would have just began the eviction process.

If you friend doesn't pay the rent then he is a douchebag loser fag.
He agreed to an oral contract, which isn't enforceable by law, technically.
He could get away with not paying, but why risk it?  You say he lives in the "ghetto," so I'd be worried about his landlord like.... robbing him and/or hurting him for not paying.

Oral agreements are enforceable in NY.  If I was his landlord he wouldn't be 4 months behind.  This is why they make knee braces.

If he pays cash there is just about zero chance that the landlord will take him to court because he is most assuredly not declaring the income.

I'd say your friend could just leave if he wants. There was no lease signed, and since he payed in cash, there's no paper trail to follow if they bring him to court. On topof that, the landlord has no info on him. If I were your friend, I'd run for it.

Depending on which tax bracket he's in, the guy could only be out 10-20%!

How about your shitbag friend pays his effing rent like the rest of us?

How would you respond if someone was renting a room in your house and didn't pay?

Tell him to be a man and pay his fucking bills like everyone else. Sure, I don't like paying my rent either, but that doesn't mean I'm going to fuck people over.

I thought your tenants usually pay you in sexual favors?  Would the knee brace be from them sucking your cock on hardwood?

I really have no idea how the land lord could allow this person to go for freaking months without so much as paying a visit or making a call. That's a serious fuck up on the land lord's part to say the least.

That being said: this person is question should man up and pay his damn bills. Most land lords are just normal working people that happen to own a few properties for some extra income. Don't screw people over like that, seriously, that shit will catch up to you one way or the other.

LOL pay it all or none.
If you show up with part of the cash, he will take that and take you to court for the 4 months.
