Okay gang,
On my third visit to Thailand to find out about the mushrooms I met a young Scotsman on the Don Sak Ferry to Koh Samui. He and I were cornered by a bungalow hawker named Mr. Dum, who was manager of the Muchies Resort in Chawang Beach. They served magic mushroom omelettes and we wanted to try one. So we went with Mr. Dum to his resort.
Nigels letter of May 11, 2004 to me:
"Aloha John, Do you remember me travelling in thailand in 1987 and cruising in a jeep on koh samui to do some forraging with you? (my shoes were stolen from the bungalow) i still live in scotland but spend 6 months at my home in the philippines each year.what kind of mushrooms do they have there?i am married to a filipina and we have a farm there in tagaytay south of manila although we spend more time at our house in calamba, laguna in the south of luzon.
i have been back to thailand a few times but mostly now just stopovers at bangkok on the way to manila. let me know how you are doing. regards Nigel Graham. p.s. Love your web site."
My notes remembering this inceident.
"It was the famous Muchies Resort in Chawang Beach on the east side of the island. We both had our shoes stolen by the bungalow manager form the porch at the bungalow we stayed at.
We also had a few girls each with us and partied all night on an LSD mushroom lace omelette. WE than proceeded to pick shrooms and he even wrote me a letter when he got home about the experience. That letter was noted in my article on Koh Samui.
Well this morning I got an email from Nigel, a friend of mine and here is what he said to me and my respones.
A brief description of this incident appeared in my article on Koh Samui in the Journal of Enthonpharmacology/.
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Thank you Nigel for remembering me.
Of course I remember you and out trip together and having had our shoes stolen. You are the only person in the woirld I met who was a manager for Zippo cigarette lighters in Glascow.
Not sure if you rememberd one of my letters to you after we left about Mr. Dum, the manager 0f Munchies Resort.
I returned there about one month after we had been there. Mr. Dum was drunk at the restaurant at muchies and was expalining top me that he had just been fired for drinking too much alcohol.
He was introducing me to waiters as his friend from hawaii.
After Mr. Dum introduced me to one of the waiters, the waiter said to me, "Ah yes, Meester John, I remember you. Someone take your shoes."
At that moment, Mr. Dum looked down at his feet under the table so I took a look, and there were my shoes on Mr. Dum's feet.
Talk about strange people. He was the one who took our shoes.
Anyway Nigel, Mr. Dum was fired and was saying things like "I no Good. I drink too much, I lose my job. Can you please Meester John, rent me motorcycle"
He wanted me to rent him a motorcycle.
I didn't.
Muchies is no longer there. It is now another club.
The mushrooms are still comnom on Samui, plus I found new species there which bares my name, "Psilocybe samuiensis Guzm?an, Bandala and Allen. Also have another new species form Cambodia. WE are naminbg that one Psilocybe angkoria Watling, Allen and Sihanonth. That guy Watlin is Roy Watling, the head of the Royal Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh. He is a close friend of mine.
Since our meeting on the Don Sak Ferry, I have returned to Thailand every year since we met.
My Exotic Forays company at my site takes four or more people on personal motorcycle mushroom adventures to Thailand and Angkor Wat, Cambodia. After you left and I wnet north I learned to go to several touristy places on my opwn after first hiring local Thais to take me there. I also motorcycled by myself form Changmai to Sukothai, 400 km away from Changmai. IT was a cool trip. Took me 12 hours to go the route. Sincve then I bring people and stay the same places, thus bring money to local Thai's and helping their economy so they in turn give me royal discounts for food and lodgings and such.
On my third visit to Thailand I met a professor at Chulalongkorn University. He is the owner of the Morakot Hotel on New Petburi road. The cab driver there kept telling me I should he meet hotel owner (who is als professor). Well I met him. He is into mushrooms and my friend. As a treat to me and those who come on my excursions, he takes us to the King of Thailand's private gardens foir a private visit. They also grow Reeshi mushrooms at the King's gardens..
Yo can go to the palace but you do not get to the King's gardens.
Anyway, I still have your letter to me about our trip. You said in that letter to me about your mushroom omelette experience with me since the shrooms were not real and laced with LSD, "Ever since I got back to Glascow, I have been leery of mushroom omellettes,"
Hehehe.
So you are in the Philippines. I hope you are safe there. Are you aware in UK now magic shrooms are being sold all over the country legally and on the internet also. They are legal as long as they are fresh.
I think the Lonely Planets Guide to the Philippines mention that shrooms were avaliable from locals in the Sagada District on Calvary Hill.
Ther are Psilocybe cubensis on Buffalo and cattle manure and Copelandia cyanescens also on manure, the latter a very small and potent mushroom.
Pictures of both are at my site.
As for another treat for you, check out my art site. There are many images fof graphic designs I do and also a have a few hundred photographic images from 2002 (Thailand and Cambodia). Just switched to Digital.
If you send me you address I can send you a CD-Rom of pictures from our journey in 1987. I still have the photos of us and the girlies. Even than Mr. Dum ripped us off at 1000 Baht when the girls at the beer gardens were ony 400 baht a night and one hundred baht for the bar.
I posted the image of me with the girls and got flack from dozens of web viewers who called me pedophile and all, not realizing those girls were in their mid to late twenties but looked younger.
Of course I have not been with any since 1992. Basically because of Aids and such. DO not want any strange desease.
Well Nigel, this is my last year going to SE Asia. Tired of the long plane flights back and forth. And all of the stupid 9/11 security at the airports..
I am glad you acutally found me.
I had a few intersting trips in Thailand. One summer on Koh Phanghan I asked an outdoor beer garden owner if he had any ganja and he told me to asked the guy sitting next to me. I tapped this stranger on the shoulder as his back was turned towards me and asked him if he had any ganja for sale. He turned and looked me directly in the eyes and said, "Mushroom John from Seattle."
Small world, 10,000 miles away on an island in the middle of nowhere (Gulf of Thailand and whammo, there he was. A friend of mine frm Seattle whom I had not seen in five years.
Be sure to visit my art web-site. Oh yes I did not go i unline until 2000.
http://www.releasethereality.com/mjart.html
I also have slides of our stay at munchies, of our breaking down in the coconut grove waiting for our jeep to get fixed, and of Mr. Dum and munchies, Mr. Dum after eating an omellete I gave him, etc.
I have attached an image of Mr. Dum stoned on a mushroom omelette aI gave him becasue it was burned to shit.
John.
Anyway send me an address and I will send you a disk of our trips together and of my other Thai adventures and cambodian expeditions.
Have a nice summer my friend,
John
And there you have it. Another tale from the shroom

Wow man, that was pretty awesome! It's little things like that which rekindle my faith in people. Makes me feel less alienated from 'society' you know?
Heh, when I go to the phillipines some day I'm going to make sure to travel across asia.

Hi Alounacara,
Nigel and I had the manager bring us a couple girls to dinner and dan ing and then to the bungalows. In Asia, and Southeast Asia it is proper to take off your shoes before entering your house. Since that day I have not had shoes ripped off again,.
Int he mornign the girls gopt up and split and we went outside to go for the day on our cycles adn our shoes were gone.
WE called the cabana boy to the bungalow and he looked all over for the shoes.
Then he got Mr. Dum the manager to help us. Mr. Dum also went away and came back a few hours later telling us no one saw our shoes. So, as I noted a month or so went by, Niugel went his way and I mine.
It was in his drunk state when he tried tointroduce me to a waiter at the resort. They are always asking tourist for gifts or by them beers. Many are lazy people and usually they do not last long if lazy.
One place I stayed for 4 years (twqic e a year) was the Samui Tongsen Resort near Big Buddla.
The manager and his wife Apau were good friends of mine. They had a bungalow boy working there who use to sleep all day. So the manager brought a big clock from the restaurant wall and had me take pictures of the kid sleeping. Three hours later he had me take a few other images to show how trhe time flew and how long this kiod was sleeping.
He later de3nied sleeping even though we showed him photos of his laziness.
All is relavent inb Thailand.

No, they were put on the porch when we crashed that night as they are on most nights in Thailand.
For your entertainment, here is a picture of Mr. Dum after he got high on the burnt omelette I gave him. HE wanted me to buy him beer and rent him a cycle. He would have crashed the cycle so i gave him the shroom omelette. Cannot stand burnt eggs. Anyone who burns a fried egg is not a good cook.
Here is Mr. Dum (and I still have s his shroom business card he handed me and Nigel on the Don Sak Ferry boat from Surat Thani to Koh Samui). This is about when he looked to his feet and I saw my Nikes on his foot. I did not say anything. Thought it was kinda humourous and all since he was really fried ont he omelette. HE never experienced anything like that. and i never saw him again after those incidents at munchies. The resort is still in Chawang but now has a different name and owenrship. Chawang is now the family oriented tourist attraction on Samui. Once a party place for shroomers and people wanting a good time, Chawangs tourist now include the original people who came there fifteen years ago and their children with them ow..

In 1987 and 1989, I gave numerous lectures around the country and elsewhere and my topic was labeled:
"Mushrooms, Omelettes and koh Samui Slide Presentation."
Told the whole story of what happened during my two trips there to study shrooms.
