TED Censorship
    #17972095 -

First the pulling down of Graham Hancock (sp?)'s video, now it seems like the cat is out of the bag.  I'm blown away.  TED Fellow Eddie Huang was kicked out of the organization for refusing to follow its cult-like orders.

"I just went through a whole week of people telling me what to do, where to be, and it was like being at a fucking Scientology summer camp," he said. "It was horrible."

So they are supposedly non-profit - put up all this open source crap in the beginning of the videos and have a $ with a slash through it.  They are making 16 million just off attendees, not paying the speakers, and then in the video they don't even talk about the sponsors that are on each page, Intel and a bunch of other ones!  They have a ton of sponsors.  I don't want to hate on TED, they have brought out some amazing ideas, but they surely have brought some shady stuff to the surface as of this week.

This is a must see (Joe Rogan interviewing one of the guests that got pulled who works for Vice Magazine):

Also, people are saying that Alex Grey did a video that never got put up - anybody have info on this?

Now I'm going to go watch some TED videos to go to sleep :p

So, I don't know what to think.

After digging through tons of YouTube comments I found an interesting one that twists the story a different way a bit:

"Eddie Huang was not asked to Talk at TED. He was a Fellow which is a mentoring program, they pay all your expenses to two TED conferences while mentoring you in your industry. This dude is totally ungrateful. He made it sound like everyone that goes to TED rooms together. He was not a speaker or a regular attendee. No one tells anyone where to go or what to do. This dude APPLIED to be a Fellow. Joe obviously didn't know the different between the fellowship program and the overall TED conference."

What do you guys think?  Does anyone have any direct experience with TED?  I have some at the University here, but it is one of the TEDx events and nothing like the big-daddy ones.  Had to get speakers approved, but everything was business or art oriented, nothing very controversial.

Yeah I usually don't watch Mr. Rogaine or any alex jones crap, but this one is absolutely worth watching if you are interested in the issue.  The dude is basically explaining his experience being a speaker at TED and the fucked up stuff he went through.  Just don't take Joe's Sasha Shulgin jokes to heart and you'll be fine

More about the experience of the vice guy then Mr. Rogaine.  I barely ever watch any of his stuff.  I only came across this after the recent TED censorship threads, and this is a direct personal experience of it.  Just pretend rogaine isn't there and lets discuss TED.

Yeah, rogaine can be a tool and can't do math.  The Shulgin comment was obviously a joke... lets not derail the thread.  I'm interested to know if this experience is normal for the average speaker attending the conference and what the agenda is.  The whole thing seemed so open minded before and now all these crazy stories are surfacing, I just want to open a dialog about that.

No idea what TED is but anything that calls itself or its members a "fellowship" 90% of the time is just another exploitative cult

After watching this and watching the Bill Gates vaccination talk it is creeping me out a bit.

TED is a conference that has blown up, amazing lectures from some of the smartest and most progressive people in the world presenting their ideas.  "Technology, Entertainment, Design."  Talks that are short and sweet, limited to 18mins max.  Very progressive thinking.

Some great ones here: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/12773357/fpart/1/vc/1

Also if you have Netflix they have a whole section dedicated to them.

I've never heard anyone call it a "fellowship" until the rogaine video or thought of it as a cult in any sort of way.  Recently they started censoring talks also, which is what sparked this thread.

Academic "fellowships" are an honorary and entirely different than "religious fellowships". It is usually a high level of recognition from your academic peers kind of thing.

In the basic sciences, you're never paid to present your findings at a conference.  There may be some freakish exceptions, but not being paid to speak is certainly the norm.

In the basic sciences a "fellowship", is typically a training period that you complete after your terminal degree.  It's usually quite rigorous (e.g. in the case of a postdoctoral fellowship).

So in this case, it sounds like someone PAID for the guy to go to TED (e.g. room and board).  In addition, to complete the fellowship, there were requirements.  So the deal was:  "We'll pay your expenses to come to TED, and in order to complete your training, you have to do a fuckton of work.  You have to attend the ENTIRE set of lectures and do the meet and greet after".

If he were doing this in a traditional academic setting none of what he's describing would be abnormal.

I just became aware only yesterday about the censorship of Graham Hancock and Rupert Sheldrake but also Nick Hanauer earlier in 2012.

Something eerie is going on. I am not sure what exactly. I 'discovered' TED quite recently, perhaps last summer or so. I read people saying TED used to be this great format or platform for interesting people to speak at but that today it is going downhill. Perhaps succesful ventures like this are destined to go sour when organisers' ego's get the best of them.

What I understand is that TED talks should be based in science somehow but it might depend on what category a talk would fall into. But it seems to me that behind the scenes this unknown (at least to me) body of scientists behave like a filter. That is to say, if it goes against their fundamental paradigms they don't like it and censor a talk.

I find this method undesirable and unnecessary and unproductive. If spreading new ideas is the goal than surely controversial views are essential. The ideas of Hancock and Sheldrake may be controversial in scientific terms but they are not without merit or logical reasoning. This stifling of original thought and ideas deeply offends me.

As I have said before, I live for new ideas these days. I am reaching out all over the web and gathering information form various sources and I have become less and less dismissive of ideas. But I am not perfect and have my own bias. But I find it not required of myself to oppose some far out ideas. I believe this is because of my ongoing self medication with the mushroom.

It could also be that behind the scenes they got 'a call'. Who is to say that someone like Dawkins didn't call these TED people or the advisory board that judges whether something is fit to spread? I know Sheldrake and Dawkins do not see eye to eye. I find it plausible that these ,aterial scientists such as Dawkins called each other and agreed to call the TED people and 'advised' them to censor Sheldrake and Hancock.

The way this censorship was handled by these TED people was really poor, they gave arguments that hold no ground and seem to reek of a badly understood criticism given to them behind the scenes. Probably a Dawkins or someone mentioned how Sheldrake and Hancock were off the mark and these Ted people barely understood the rubbish that was put forth by them and translated it into a poorly written rationalization. In fact, they changed the reasons later because they were very dismissive towards the speakers. Apparently, I read, they then moderated their own obvious hostility.

It seems that some paradigms were threatened and some panic broke out. Maybe they recognize that they are losing grip on the TED franchise with the TEDx speakers wandering of fthe safe and established paths of 'true science'. And then Hancock and Sheldrake were sacrificed in a futile attempt to preserve what TED should be about.

So something eerie is going on. And as I mention Dawkins, it doesn't need to be him of course, there are scientific organizations that could have called. Various organizations exist to keep a leash on science. And there is James Randi's  organization too. My intuition says something like that has been going on.

And so that totally conflicts with the original idea of TED. I think it is outrageous and dogmatic, but also quite hurtful towards these speakers to basically say that who they are and what they stand for and their work is not measuring up to some standard set by dogmatic scientists. Since their views are specifically question some of these dogma's, it could not be tolerated to remain 'on air' so to say.

TED people, surprised by the backlash, eventually created a special corner for discussion thinking somehow that would appease the insulted people. But it is still wrong.

I liked TED and thought I had found an open minded platform. I have shared some TED video's with others but I won't do so again. Maybe we should not throw away the baby with the washing water but I cannot truly trust them again.
