What you linked to wasn't anyone genuinely being an asshole but rather saying things like, "I thought you knew better." Which is something I would agree with, especially since she mentioned having dealt with substance abuse prior.

If you perceive some one telling another person to stop doing drugs, even when they've admitted to having problems, as berating them then you have a lot of growing up to do.

There is a huge difference between saying "you should stop using drugs" and acting all high-and-mighty and judging.

"I thought you knew better" - said in the way those posts (and all the rest of them I didn't reference from page 2 on) do doesn't come across as caring but as judgemental and high-and-mighty, doing more harm than good. It's the same as when parents, for example, discipline their kid. Telling the kid they are disappointed in them, making them feel like shit, etc. are perfect ways to make the kid psychologically damaged. Newsflash Joie: Making people feel like shit doesn't make them feel loved or cared for...

I see where your coming from, but I don't think it's fair to generalize all the concerned people's posts based off of how some have worded themselves. I agree that "I thought you knew better" implies moral superiority, but I don't think that was the intention and anyone who posted that would probably be glad to reword themselves.

I thought you knew better is akin to saying, "I thought you could recognize and prevent yourself from falling back into addiction, but that obviously isn't the case so I'm here to warn you about what I see happening here to prevent further harm to yourself." It's not saying "I'm disappointed in you," but rather "you appear to be in denial and I would expect someone who has already dealt with substance abuse to recognize warning signs better than you appear to be doing right now."

It's not meant to make her feel like shit, but to make her realize that she should be paying more attention to her own destructive behaviors because there's not always going to be someone else there to point it out. Of course, expounding and being a little more loving with phrasing is a lot better than a short quip but it still means the same thing and all you're doing is taking issue with someone's wording and acting like it proves malicious intentions or prepubescence.

It really seems like you're the one with a high and mighty attitude here. Where did I make anyone feel like shit? Where did I advocate making people feel like shit?

You're assuming you know that other poster's intentions were to make OP feel like shit and you're acting superior based on that assumption. I haven't seen anyone intentionally trying to make BH feel bad. Some people are using a little rough language, but that doesn't meant they're trying to be assholes or that what they're saying is any less valid.

It's one of those situations where tone matters. Sadly it's difficult to do so with just written word.

Yeah, when you are reaching this point, it's time to reconsider the benefits of what you're doing.
Take it from someone with personal experience. :elmo:

This. Times 100.  And don't feel judged about it. I'm speaking (quoting? lol) from experience as well.

And if you're determined to fuck around with this stuff, at least try to vary up your shots. Don't go for the easy spot every single time, as tempting as it may be. When I go to the doc to get blood drawn, there is a nice little map for them, already laid out.... you can see all of my "sweet spots" quite plainly-- because of layer after layer of scar tissue. Not pretty.

Haven't used a needle on myself in over a decade-- and god willing I never will again. (Except in emergency medial-type situations, were that ever to arise.) Though i admit there is a drug or two out there I haven't tried by that route, that I'd be curious about. All things considered, though, IMO it's not worth it. For me, at least. Your mileage may vary.

Just be as sterile as you can. Even if you're not risking the ultimate taboo of sharing needles-- if you re-use your rigs you can still fuck yourself up pretty bad. I learned that one the hard way when, fortunately, I was young and healthy enough that endocarditis didn't kill me. The 2+ months in the hospital hooked up to an IV was no fun, though.

Be well, whatever you choose.

Tone matters?  Maybe if some tone had been used at some point in the past maybe this valued member of our community would not be suffering the pain of addiction.  The fuckwads don't want to think about that because of all the track marks they carry around and all the failures they haven't had the courage to face or ask someone to help them face.

Fuck a bunch of motherfuckers worrying about being judgmental.  These are the same kind of mental pygmies as those who told BH that shooting up was a fun idea to begin with.

Judge my ass.  Immaturity isn't a virtue.

how do you know shes not escaping from something before she even did drugs?

thats the point nobody does. so why even try to comprehend if its not possible unless youre a close friend of hers.

regardless i think it is judgemental and dystopia is right.

Huh?

Judgement does matter when it comes to addiction, because it can isolate the user leading to further harm. Addicts also have a tendency to skew the meanings of what others say in order to rationalize or defend their drug use. It's in these scenarios that I opt to choose my words carefully in order not to be misinterpreted. I think there are enough examples of misinterpretation in this thread alone to justify my point.

More or less what I was going to say. Maybe the "tough love" approach that mpd seems to advocate works on some people-- but with others it very well could have the opposite effect you intend.

Remember that both opiates, and the cycle of addiction can severely mess with a person's mood / emotions. And often people who turn to recreational opiates, especially with regularity, have a difficult time dealing with negative emotions to begin with. So saying something to them which causes deeply negative emotion, and/or self-doubt, and/or self-loathing, etc, can very well just feed into the emotional pattern that sparked or worsened the addiction to begin with.

Unless you know a person well, and have good reason to believe the "tough" approach is the right one for that person, it's usually better to err on the side of caution and not risk making the person  feel worse.  That's aside from the important point that the person likely knows damn well what they're doing to themselves, risking, etc... and it's not like you'd be the first person to shame a junkie.

Though I will absolutely agree that in some cases, startling or shocking someone-shaking them up-can be a good thing. But again, that's not the kind of thing I'd pull unless it was someone I thought I either knew fairly well, or at least understood fairly well...
