Sterile technique for beginners with jars
    #5018678 -

So someone PM'd me a while back with a question about sterile technique and why I don't have contaminates as bad as they thought I should without using a flowhood or glovebox or any special precautions. I figued I'd offer a bit of advice to those of you just starting out.

When you've learned all about PCing and doing a clean inoculation, there's very little left for you to worry about when it comes to contams IF you manage your jars properly. I don't use filters on my jars, just holes PF style with foil covering them. No vermiculite layer, no polyfil, just holes and the foil and I use straight WBS and cooked brown rice. Last batch I lost 1 jar out of 36 (and that was because I handled this jar accidently poking a tiny hole in the protective foil)... how? Here's how. I DO NOT CHECK MY JARS. Put them in a CLEAN container (i prefer sterilte tub in a tub setups) and LEAVE THEM. Have that clean container ready and waiting for the jars right there where you're innoculating them... don't go hauling them across the house, that'll only expose them to airborne particles more than necessary. I know you want to check them every day, sometimes even more often than that. DON'T! Once they go in that tub, the dirtiest thing they can possibly come into contact with is YOU. Your hands must be clean to even handle the jars. PMEX medical hand cleaner is great, but good old antibacterial hand cleaner is fine... ALWAYS WASH YOUR HANDS BEFORE HANDLING YOUR JARS! EVERYTIME!! Once they go in that container after inoculation, DON'T EVEN OPEN THE LID for at least 7 days. I only look in the incubation tub a couple times during colonization... once at 10 days to check if anything contaminated, and once again at 17 days when I expect them to be finished. That's it, no more. If you handle the jars frequently, expect contaminates... it's that simple!

Anyhow, just thought I'd try and contribute something of use to the any new-to-the-JOB growers out there. Have fun and remember, keep your mouth shut.

BTW, this is how I do pints and quarts... gave up on half pinters when I switched to whole grain. Honestly, I'd recommend any of you considering BRF to not even bother. Whole grain is just as easy to use, gives better fruit and yields, and colonizes A LOT faster than BRF and verm cakes. Whole grain is the way to go, even when first starting out... it's not "advanced" or anything... but you do have to have a pressure cooker to use it. Boiling it will not work out well.

oh, and become a Sporkontologist.

ALL HAIL THE SPORK!!!

5 lbs wild bird seed 1 lb brown rice, soaked 24 hours, simmered 40 minutes, rinsed off completely in collander, loosely jarred up in pints, pack 'em in the PC and cook for 1.5 hours, let cool in the PC over night, inoculate in the morning, incubate, birth to poop, incubate that 7 days (or so), open and fruit.

VOILA!! SHROOMISIZED!!

I use wheat, treat it the same as rye. Easy to prep and water content is a breeze. Sometimes I add a little millet or wbs to the grain masters for some extra nock points, but I find wbs to be messy and a pain. Wheat or rye for the win.
