Grain Filter
    #1785751 - 08/06/03 04:21 PM (20 years, 7 months ago)

It a filter (coffee filter, tyvek, etc) mandatory for using grain (WBS) tek? My contam rate is usually 0% when I do PF style, due to the fact , IMO, that I practice near lab-quality sterile technique. Jars are removed from the pressure cooker, placed immediately into a rubbermaid container that has been cleaned with bleach, then it is thoroughly rinsed with hot waterand dried. as the PC cools, the lid is removed and it is misted with 99% IPA. A paper towel is used to spread / dry the mixture and the lid is placed on. Prior to the PC being opened, the air around both is misted with the 99% IPA solution. My inoc's are done in my sterile inoc hood (homemade, HIGHLY effective), then the jars are placed back into the sterile box and transferred to a mycelial growth chamber (taht has been cleaned as well).

I guess to sum it up, has anyone tried WBS with just a lid (inverted, "PF" style with holeS), and had sucess with no contams?

gracias

Rubbing alcohol. The reason you want some kind of filter with grains is air exchange. I use polyfill cause it is easy and cheap as hell. You could probably get away with the inverted lids with holes, but it seems like more of a contam risk to me.

PF cakes have a layer of dry vermiculite on the top. this is sortof like a filter. it keeps the bad stuff from coming in contact with your nutritious substrate.

unlike PF cakes, grain jars are not a single, solid mass but shakable substrate.

you shake grain jars up after partial colonization, spreading mycelium around, colonizing it faster.

a layer of dry verm wouldn't be worth anything to a jar you intend to shake. if you don't intend on shaking the jars, PF style verm barriers will work, but it'll take forever for those bitches to colonize.

you really need a filter. get some polyfil; it's cheaper than dirt and works great.
