lysol on needles
    #1778268 - 08/04/03 01:03 PM (20 years, 8 months ago)

my friend wasn't thinking while innoculating jars and used lysol on the needle in between jars instead of alcohol. now, none of the jars are showing any growth accept for one. could this be the reason? what are other possiblilties of absolutely no growth?
this never happend before...
thanks

did you wipe off the excess lysol from the needle? if so then it shouldn't be the problem. what's your grow setup? is there sufficient air exchange in the jars, maybe you innoculated while the jars were too hot.

lysol was only used on the needle so it couldn't be the reason for no growth.

well, their wasn't a lot of lysol on the needle, trust me. the jars definately wern't hot at all, they were cooling for 8 hours.
the air exchange in the jars shouldn't be the problem either, i have lids on them with 4 holes, and then tinfoil over the holes, some air should get inside...

I don't think lysol on the needles is a good idea, since it seems to act as a mutagen on the fruits, producing rosecombs and such...

A solution of 70% IPA (isopropylalcohol) in 30% distilled water within a spray bottle set to fine mist works very well for me.

It is a derivative of lysozyme. Lysol will lyse most bacteria and germs, but not all of them. It does work well though. I use it all the time in my microbiology lab.

Are their any properties specific to lysol that make it desireable over standard disinfectants?

Depends on the disinfectant. Most of them are just as good. Some claim to be antibiotic, when in actuality they are not. They will test it on a couple of types of bacteria, it will work and then they claim it will kill everything. Nothing will do this, but lysol will kill most bacteria you come in contact with that could be a problem. Plus lysol is cheap.

I did not realize that you were in the UK and cannot get lysol. Im sure you guys have something that is just the same thing under a different name.

Not sure if this means anything , but in hospitals a good solution of bleach is used to sterilize lots of things that do not need autoclaved. Normally the solution is a 10%.

Just a nit-pick -- bleach isn't used to sterilize; it's used to sanitize.
