Singularities and the Speed of Light
    #17795121 -

So this is just random pondering. In our universe, apparently nothing is able to travel faster than the speed of light. However, when we look at a black hole we see that light cannot escape after passing through the event horizon. So when matter enters the event horizon, could it be possibly traveling faster than the speed of light?

Now that would seem to defy the laws of out universe, but does this technically not break the law since black holes are singularities where the laws of space and time no longer apply?

personally, i bet shit does travel faster than light while it tries to enter a black hole and inadvertently gets shot backwards in time where it meets back up with all of the rest of the matter in the universe at the big bang.

I do like that theory, although that theory would require that eventually, ALL matter in the universe must enter into a black hole and be launched back to the same point.

As for me, i like to think that when all the matter in the universe enters one MASSIVE black hole, that it becomes far too unstable for its immense gravity to contain and explodes, basically a repeating cycle of the big bang. Who knows if its right i just like the idea.

Quote:
Black holes almost certainly exist, and one of their basic properties is that they trap light. However, it is also true that nothing exceeds the speed of light. In fact, the theoretical prediction of black holes is due to the General Theory of Relativity, which is built on the principle that the speed of light in a vacuum is constant. The analogy of a cannonball falling back to Earth with the trapping of light in a black hole is only a crude and suggestive one that is not correct at a fundamental level (for one thing, the cannonball has mass, but light does not; it turns out that this difference is critical, because massless particles MUST travel at light velocity, but massive particles CANNOT travel at light velocity).

To understand fully why a black hole can trap light but the light still always travels at constant velocity requires an understanding of the General Theory of Relativity, but the essential point is that the black hole curves spacetime back on itself, so that all paths in the interior of the black hole lead back to the singularity at the center, no matter which direction you go (an analogy in two dimensions is that no matter which direction you go on the surface of the Earth in a "straight line" (what mathematicians call a "geodesic" or a "great circle"), you never escape the Earth but instead return to the same point. Imagine extending that analogy to the 4 dimensions of spacetime and you have a rough explanation for why light travels at light speed, but cannot escape the interior of a black hole.

This touches upon some things you have mentioned. How thorough is your understanding of the General Theory of Relativity? The mathematics is still above my level of comprehension so I can't provide a straightforward answer. But you might want to check out this source:

I have a general understanding of the theory of relativity but nothing in depth. I'm more interested in quantum mechanics and such.

Oh and the math is beyond me, math has never been my strongsuit. Im really a lot more interested in chemistry but this kind of stuff intrigues me and i love learning about it.

That does help answer my question though, although im still a bit fuzzy.

Random question but you guys ever look into time travel using black holes to create wormholes through space and/or time? Obviously theoretical but really cool stuff to think about.

that is exactly what i was talking about.  black hole speeds u faster than light, u go backwards in time.  careful though, there is a big bang back there.  this could also explain all that extra undetectable matter they cant find but know is there.

Yea but i mean the theory where you begin to orbit a black hole WITHOUT entering the event horizon and get yourself to speeds fast enough to traverse time as desired. Thats not really the correct way, im relying on memory here but i read about it a few months ago and it was interesting, imagining that spacetime is a 2D Sheet/line, you can use the black hole to bend the line/sheet to the point where it comes into contact with itself and the point it comes into contact with is the destination, and the distance between them is a wormhole. Like a space highway, if you will. Im just unsure as to if there is any way to "choose" your destination on the spacetime continuum. This stuff blows my mind as is haha.

the event horizon is the point u have to hit to reach those speeds, that is why the event occurs.
