The Technological Singularity

Anyone interested in this? The basic idea is that at some point in the near future, a superintelligence will be developed, either AI or an "enhanced" human intelligence, and that superintelligence will itself be used to design even more advanced superintelligence, until there is a point (the singularity) at which what comes next is impossible to predict or imagine. AKA, the superintelligence being that much more intelligent than us shows/helps us to understand things that are impossible to figure out with our intelligence. The core of that being nanotechnology, which is the only real path mankind can take in the future. There is alot more information at http://www.kurzweilai.net/

It's called the Singularity because a mathematical singularity is when a graph suddenly goes infinitely into the Y axis (I'm sure it's more complicated than that, but that's the analogy).

I think it's rediculously fascinating and love reading about it. Anyone else?

i think its a pretty cool topic. i also think you'd get a bettr discussion going in S&P. maybe a science mod will move it if you want.

The Vingeian Singularity, eh? I love this idea!

This ties in closely with Transhumanism - the idea that we should embrace the end of the "human race" as inevitable and pave the way for what comes next. If we invent AI, it could be a far more efficient form of "life" than biological life has been...so it is possible that the invention of AI will spell the downfall of (at least) the human race.

Why not, then, try to become the AI, ourselves? We should research ways to upload human consciousness into a machine. That way we become the AI. We become the future evolution of Life.

Ha, nice trendal. I love the idea of Transhumanism. But I disagree with the idea of the end of the "human race", or maybe I don't. Depends on how I interpreted it.

I think it will be the end of the standard human. And I also don't believe it will come in the form of AI. I'm glad people like Kurzweil and Yudkowsky believe in human equivalent AI so much, but I don't see it happening. How can we hope to recreate something that we don't understand the first thing about?

I see it as coming from intelligence-enhancement. Maybe much in the future uploading will be a very real possibility

*Note - uploading is the process of using nanobots to create a schematic of each of your neurons, upload that schematic into a computer while mainting communication with all the neurons it's talking to, and then moving on to the next neuron until all your neurons and their branches are recreated inside a computer.

That idea is a little far fetched and requires untold amounts of technology that we don't have, but I see it or something similar as the next wave of evolution. Not AI, but enchanced intelligence. Possibily even genetic?

Any form of superhuman intelligence will spell a new era the instant it's created. Time and effort don't solve the big questions, it's intelligence. 1000 physicists could work for 100 years and still not solve a problem that someone with an IQ 50 points higher than their's could solve in an hour. Creativity and problem solving are what separate the intelligent from the genius.

Excellent point though (not to be picky) a mere 50 points of IQ is not very much at all. The "average" human IQ covers a range of over 30 points alone. People of "genius" level intelligence are a full 50 points above "average" intelligence.

I think it would me more like 1000's of IQ points, or perhaps well beyond the IQ rating system entirely.

Well yeah. I was using the 50 points as the difference between a genius and a regular scientist. Like the differnce between my physics professor and Stephan Hawking (actually it's probably bigger than 50, but you get my idea)

A real superintelligence would probably not even work with an IQ scale anymore as you said. Hence the Singularity. We lose the perception of what comes next because it's so far from what we know.
