Re: Speed of light question.. [Re: DieCommie]

so is the universe larger than 26 billion years across?

things coudl go in opposite directions, both at the speed of light, therefor making the space between expand at 2x the speed of light no?

Does what your talking about the stuff that makes things liek 'wormholes' and 'alternate universes' and whatnot?  Seems like time would be quite fucked up at certain points in space with all this crazy shit going on...

peace

OP:  If you were able to travel at the speed of light in a ship and flip on your head lights the light would probably build up and as soon as you slow down a small amount a powerful ball of light might be projected from your headlights followed by a lesser constant intensity.  At least that is what I would think would happen.

Concerning the rest of the thread relativity is way over my head.  But since you can only come close to the speed of light might a more intense beam than is produced at production be projected forward?  Maybe not visible because the light is traveling in the same direction as what is producing it, but as soon as the light were to reach a reflective surface it might be apparent that the beam is more intense than at lower speeds.

Yea, the consensus is the universe is larger than 26 billion across.  Of course, cosmology is not my expertise at all, so Im just parroting what I heard.

Now if two things go in opposite directions relative to you at .9c, then there speed relative to each other is not 1.8c!  (it is .99c)  Mind bending at its best!  Your notion is completly intuitive and logical, it was 'galilean relativity', but its not how things work at high speeds.  The reason galaxies move faster than c relative to each other is that space in between them expands.  So they each have their motions in their own direction, which would be less than c for any observer except for the fact of space expanding between them.

This isnt science fiction like wormholes and alternate universes, its an expected theory with experimental verification.  Crazy things certainly do happen in nature, and the theories of relativity are rife with counter-intuitive ideas.

No...why would it be more intense? If turn on your headlamps, the light is emitted at the speed of light. Full stop. If you're in the spacecraft, the light will leave you at the speed of light. Regardless of your initial speed.
