I started with a portulacaria afra as it is so easy to train, fast to grow, retains water like a succulent but takes the shape of a tree.  and to top it all off the leaves are delicious, like a cross between green apple skins and lemons.  They can be found at any big box store or small nursery

The internet.
I've grown and trained/wired bonsai for a couple of years now. Similar to growing cactus, it's very addicting. You don't need any books really, just find the type of plant you want, then search the internet for information on what it's needs are (light/temp/water/ferts/soil/). Some plants are more difficult  to grow and train than others. Shrubs are the easiest in my opinion. I would start with a Juniper, since they are a good beginners plant, and have a beautiful look. Also, a Juniper's trunk naturally gets pretty gnarled in it's early years without wiring. Jade plants are cool too, but kind of boring. I don't even consider them bonsai, since they kind of just do their own thing, but that's just me. Maples, Elms, and Fig varieties are a bit harder to grow and maintain, but they are some of the most beautiful trees for bonsai material.

If your gonna grow from seed be sure to pic a tree you like and check the difficulty level. Though growing from seed is cheapest it much longer to have something that resembles a tree.

Acacia are a pretty good choice and not a bad choice as a starting tree.

If your considering buying a bonsai make sure it was properly trained. Lowes and HD sometimes sell 'bonsai' trees which ARE NOT REAL BONSAI they are shrubs cut to resemble a tree.

Willow can be propagated from cuttings very easily.

I'm trying to start some Metasequoia (Dawn Redwood) seeds outside this winter, maybe I'll try growing a few of those as bonsai if they sprout. I've seen pictures of bonsai Metasequoia and they looked pretty awesome.

Baobabs are bad ass. Native to Madagascar.

Banyan trees have aerial roots that make for some spectacular nebari.

I think I wanna try willow due to the easy propagation and the fact that curly willow already grows contorted. Ill post when I start this endeavor and keep you all updated

I'm thinking about doing some bonsai as well.
I just want a free/plant that will grow quickly so I don't have to wait 40+ years to enjoy my creation
