I don't think you need to save receipts to get food stamps.  You do need to show them how much you make, and the more you make, the less money you get in food stamps.

I just got about $250 in groceries from the dumpster last night.  I am eating some mushroom risotto that I got from the dumpster right now, it's quite good!

No you don't need receipts and you guys can apply as a couple. Don't have to be married or anything. Just make sure you have your most current rent receipts, lease, utility bills, two months worth of recent pay stubs, birth certificate, social security card, and photo ID. Now when people applied with me even if there ID was from another state if they can prove they're a current residency the ID was no issue.

Seriously if you have any questions just hit me up and I'll help you out. It's tough out here and social services were created for this explicit purpose to help people through hard financial times. There is absolute no shame for you or anyone who needs help.

Food stamps saved my ass when I first moved out and on my own. Trust me dude, it really does help if you really are in that type of situation.

Unless a decision you just made you don't need to eat out of the garbage. You always run the risk of eating something that's been tainted. At least goto a food pantry if you don't want to apply for assistance at least you can get your basics: bread, milk, canned goods, dry goods etc. t

I like dumpster diving for food.  We do it twice a week and we eat really well.  My kitchen is now stocked with a huge pile of veggies and the fridge is full of steaks and turkey burgers. 

I have plenty of money to buy food but I prefer dumpster food.  They throw it away when it's still perfectly good.  When you buy food, you are paying a lot of people to burn a lot of gasoline and make lots of plastic, which is one reason I try to avoid that.

And we have the best dinner parties : )

I have been dumpster diving food for ten years and have never gotten sick from dumpster food.  Tainted food smells bad, when in doubt I throw it out.  Some of my friends have been dumpster diving for 20 - 30 years, and have never gotten sick from dumpster food.  I even eat stuff like dumpster sushi & fish, never had a problem. 

Half the stuff I get is sealed, the other half I wash well.

I tried that once, it worked.  But I don't really like taking food for poor people since I am not poor.  And the food was low quality.  If you choose your dumpster properly, you can get some really high quality food.  I got 2 sealed boxes of filet mignon last night.

Thank God a lifelong friend lives here and is a caregiver ;-)
I have my sleeping bag, clothes and music.  I'm super happy!

I don't want to say the name of the place because I am currently the only person who dumpster dives there.  There are a lot of good dumpsters in every city though - Everywhere that sells food throws out broken packages, fruit that is ripe, food with damaged labels, etc.

I live in San Francisco.  I also know some good spots on Oakland and Berkeley.  There are several fruit dumpsters, bread dumpsters, chocolate dumpsters, beer/wine dumpsters, etc...They often throw out whole cases of beer and wine when one bottle/can breaks and sprays beer on all the other containers.


The first time I ate dumpster food my friend said it was from the dumpster, and I didn't believe him.  It was really good and didn't taste like it came from the dumpster.  A few weeks later they started including me on their dumpster runs and I was hooked.  So much more fun than shopping!

Yeah that sounds less disgusting now that you explain it, but I live in a smaller area so that sort of thing doesnt happen around here. I wouldnt mind getting trashed and eating trash chocolate.

Yeah same here, I was working part time for retail and at first I got $150 a month and I was doing okay for myself. And then I made slightly more for a couple months during the holidays and they dropped it down to $16 a month! Even after the holidays were over they didnt increase my benefits, I even reported it and tried to get it changed but they ignored all my requests. Needless to say, I lived off eating oats, ramen, peanut butter for a while.

I saw this segment on Andrew Zimmerman travel show where groups of people would dumpster dive prepare and cook meals, hold dinner parties. And they were also located in San Fran.

I'll be the first admit if you cross paths with a lazy or just straight mean case worker they'll give you the runaround. Some states they treat people applying for services lower than dirt.

I don't know the girls in that video, but I have gotten fruit from that dumpster before.  It's not one that I regularly visit, but I check it when I am in the mission at night.

We make $1k a month and get $200 for food. We share with family the things we don't need for the month.

I've lost 40 lbs in the last 6 months and am healthier than ever.

Overall having a child costs more than any amount of help you get. I mean you get help for medical/food, but that's about it.. Clothes, school related stuff, toys/games/fun stuff, etc all comes from you. Stuff that isn't necessary for survival, but is fully expected by today's society (and might as well be "necessary").
