Food stamps?
    #17748489 -

I recently moved out of state and I'm working 20 hrs a week and making 500$ a month. 300$ goes towards rent, 10$ goes towards internet, and I probably spend 20-50$ a week on food to feed myself and someone else.

The person I live with is also in the same situation as me. With this going on, we have like $150 to spare after living expenses. We also spend about $80-$100 on gas together since we share one car, and my commute is 23 minutes away, and his is 10 minutes away.

I'm debating if I should get on food stamps; I really dislike the idea of "hand outs" but I get anxiety when I go grocery now because I'm constantly worried about how much the total price of my groceries will be, and I'd really like to put some money aside for my savings account (emergency money, etc.)

I don't want to feel like a leech, but I believe that my friend and I are doing our best to get by. He's completed his degree and I'm still working on my education.

Does anyone know if I have to be an official resident of a state to apply, or does anyone have experience with food stamps?

Yes I believe you need to be a legal resident.  If you really need the help, that is what it is there for friend.  Don't let all the angry right wing neo cons scare you from eating proper!
If you are gainfully employed in most states that is enough for residency, all you need is a state ID.
I wish you all of the best!

Dude if your working , and your still hungry, get the food stamps. They are there for that. Many people abuse these systems, like trading their food stamp card for a small amount of money for crack. If your gonna eat the food, then by all means go get the food stamps.

Thanks you two, I'm feeling a little bit better about the idea of it.

Anon #2, I only have a California ID and the person I live with has NY ID. Does it have to be a Colorado ID?

I'll be doing my research now, though.

There are 50 million people in the US living off of food stamps, or 1 out of every 6 people, we have a lot of poor people in the country.

Get on the food stamps if you qualify, there may be a day when these stamps don't buy much food, best of luck.

You need to have proof of RES.

State Issued ID. As well as another form of ID
(passport, things like that)

Proof of income (two paystubs or a phone call)

And SSC may be required as well.

I dunno about other states, but mine is easy to get on (in a sense). Don't get discouraged though.. There are quite a few times during the process where they make it sound like you won't be getting them. You're also going to get dicked around a bit, not purposely, but the program is a confusing mess, even for those who work for it. Mistakes get made constantly, one person will tell you one thing and another will tell you something else. Just keep pushing for them..

For my state, yes you need to be a resident, but the only thing you're missing is a license/State ID. You have a job, and a home.

Nah I don't live there, that's why I said I dunno if my state is different (in procedures and what not). I really wish I lived there though...

I lived in Oklahoma for a few years back when I was young. My first job, I was making minimum wage which was $5 per hour back then. A full time job of 40 hours gave me a check, pre-taxed, of $200 per week. But because I was a single white male, I was denied food stamps because my status did not qualify me for food stamps. I would be checking out at the grocery store with raman noodles, hot dogs and mac and cheese while watching people check out in front of me with food stamps and they were loaded with steaks and all kinds of brand name foods and drinks. Perhaps they have eased the laws and requirements for food assistance since then or even your state has more relaxed laws (it is different from state to state) But all I know is when I was in Oklahoma, it sucked. I wish you luck. Do not be ashamed of needing to eat.

#6, really? with the household of two it said the max income is $1,594k, we are making less than that. Looks like I gotta surrender my California ID or drivers license..

I think my boyfriend will have to be the one who applies; the rent/lease is under his name.  But, I think I will request from the landlord some form of receipt or bill that includes my name.  Other than that, I only have pay stubs with my address on it.

#2, yep! We relocated to Colorado on December 28th, and found our own  place on Jan 5th... Found jobs in less than 2 weeks  We love the opportunities we've experienced so far. Colorado has been great.

Anonymous #7, wow, i'm sorry to hear that. :feelsbadman: i hope you are doing well right now, though.

Some food shelves will allow you free shares if you volunteer. If you have your health, go for it. The one out here gives about $200 in groceries per share. It's not the best of food but sometimes it's amazing. If you have no problem cooking then you're fine, a lot of chicken and sometimes beef, a lot of grains and non perishables. Everyone there is there for the same reason. Good way to meet friends.

OP,

I worked in Social Services and helped people receive foodstamps, welfare, Medicaid, and rental assistance (yes in my state we will pay your rent for a year and sometimes if you qualify).

Welfare, Medicaid, are state programs so the regulations vary from state to state. Food stamp program is Federal when calculating your eligibility they'll take inti account your housing costs, child care, utilities, etc. Is the person you live with a roommate or partner? Food Stamps considers people who eat and prepare good together so if you are just roommate you don't need to apply together. But if you are gather 2 months worth of all your bills, two months of paystubs, and apply.

OP,

In my line of work I saw a lot of scammers. Women who use their Food Stamps to feed a dead beat bf before their children. People through all their stamps away on junk food. Or junkies who would sell their food stamps every month.
Despite all that I think this program is needed and should continue. On the fluoride I would get elderly people who couldn't makes ends meet on their fixed income. Or the family that lost everything after the father/mother was laid off unexpectedly. So many stories almost anyone could lose everything and be in financial dire straits. So you have no reason to feel ashamed or that it's a hand out. Because in a country with this much wealth nobody should ever have to go hungry.

You're making $6.25 an hour? See if your local costco has any openings, they pay good.

thanks for the advice so far, everyone.

anon 8, i would volunteer, but we use one car and gas is $$. :c

#9 yeah, we mostly cook fresh as possible. we don't have a microwave, which is good in my opinion; no lousy frozen foods, etc.

my room mate is my boyfriend. should we start saving our receipts for everything? I.E, gas, groceries? We prepare foods most of the time, yes. Will my boyfriend have to be the one to apply since the lease is under his name?

We spent 60$ on a last night because we were out of food; We bought a lot of fruit, 10 boxes of pasta (buy 10 and it is .49 cents each  ) that doesn't "expire" til 2014, apples, fruits, tomato, avocado, bell peppers, bok choy, pickles, peanut butter, bread, potatoes, onion, orange juice (boyfriend likes it in smoothies), paper towels, toilet paper, chicken, kroger brand "nutella".

Too bad you don't extreme coupon.  I have watched a few of those shows and those people walk out of a grocery store with hundreds of dollars worth of food for like $20.  But it takes a huge amount of coordination and planning. I could never do it.

when i lived with my parents, i used to coupon! it helped a ton.

and before target had a limit of 4 coupons per transactions, i used to get like $15 worth of shit for 5$.

unfortunately I don't have a printer with me, but i do snag grocery coupons when i can   i wish i was able to set some money aside for a freaking vacuum.

anyway, thank you all for the support so far and for understanding. looks like my boyfriend and i will start saving our receipt. my boyfriend also needs to find a way to get his pay stub-- his work pays him with some pre-paid card that gets reloaded every friday. he is the one who spends most his money on groceries, since he knows i worry so much about $
