I feel shitty being on EBT/Food stamps
    #17963609 -

follow up thread fr om this

My boyfriend and I just got food stamps yesterday; $226 a month.

We recently moved in together after being in a long distance relationship for over a year, and we've been working shitty minimum wage. I'm still finishing up my degree (won't be til 2014 or so) and so is he, and we're both pretty young.

Anyway, my paycheck has $30 bucks deducted from it per week ($10 taxes, $20 union fees) and his work barely gives him 20 hours a week; This is a new beginning for us, but I feel so guilty and awful being on food stamps. My parents always raised me that EBT/welfare is horrible, so I guess that's why I feel this way about it. Before food stamps, we've been living on less than $5/day (#35/week), and if we went over our budget, we'd run out of money within a year... And I've always felt anxiety going to the grocery because I was afraid of how much our total would end up being; If we were over $5 bucks one day, we couldn't spend as much money on the next day, or none at all.

Quote:
The person I live with is also in the same situation as me. With this going on, we have like $150 to spare after living expenses. We also spend about $80-$100 on gas together since we share one car, and my commute is 23 minutes away, and his is 10 minutes away.

We barely go out to eat, and we typically make fresh meals at home everyday.

Anyone have experience or advice on how I can not-feel-shitty about this? Thanks.

well if you NEED ebt then thats what its there for, to help you through tough times. people get real prideful about government assistance but its there for a reason. dont feel bad. hell tell your folks maybe they will throw some extra food cash your way!

one suggestion for a little more breathing room which i did when i was in school and on tough times making shit money was donate plasma. takes about 45 minutes and you can do it 2 times a week an pays around 20-35 per visit. That would put a huge inflow of cash into that food/bill fund. if you and your bf did it that would be close to 100$ extra.

i say dont sweat it youll be out of school before you know it and wont need welfare once you get a better job. In the mean time stay in school look for higher paying jobs and just get through it youll be fine.

:highfive:

just don't be a government leach your whole life and pay it back one day, that's all society asks.  Take what you need when you need it, and then contribute when you're older and established.  nothing wrong with that.

If I was eligible, i'd get food stamps immediately and i'm pretty well-off.

I wouldn't feel bad about it at all because I'll be paying 40% of my income to the government for the next 35 years.  (MD)

If you're eating real food you have nothing to feel bad about. People need help, that's what the system is for. The ones who need to feel bad are the ones who just use it to buy tons of name brand junk food that they wouldn't buy otherwise.

Fuckkkk feeling bad about that.

Take your tax money back anyway you can, better then paying the wages of the cock suckers who are out for personal benefit.

My family just started getting food stamps a few months ago because my dad lost his job.

I felt kind of shitty about it because I don't like welfare, but my dad has worked all his life and has paid a lot of money into taxes so I don't really care that much.

At least my family and you aren't like the people who don't even bother to try and work and have never paid taxes before and just sit on their ass and get foodstamps when they could be working.

I mean you go to school and work, you're who they're there for, at least you're making an effort.

And donating plasma is a good way to make some extra cash, I make $250 a month just from that.

Thank you everyone, I feel kind of better, and thanks for sharing your experiences.  Everyone has a good point! I guess i'll have to bring myself to accept that I'm using food stamps :/ I felt really embarrassed when I was paying with my card (i was just buying eggs and celery), there's no self-check outs at the albertson's near me, so i had to pay at a cashier. Whatever though, gov. assistance is there for a reason.

It's ok, its good that you feel embarassed.

But dont get down on yourself, look to the future and make a plan.

Think of small realistic and practical steps you can do to fulfill your plan and try to do something every day.

You know OP, lots of people are on Foodstamps, lots don't need it, and lots do. You are one of them that does.
Everyone's gotta eat. The government set up a program to help it's own. I love those people that say... "Oh yeah, feed the ones overseas, but not our own." We do... it's called EBT.
You need it. Take it.
If you feel awful, and have some extra time, check out volunteering at a food pantry, where people come in for day old food. Help them feel less ashamed too, and you'll understand.

1 in 6 americans are on food stamps.

In this economy don't beat yourself up for it. You're in a shitty situation and that's what it's there for.

If you're buying healthy foods and cooking and not wasting anything, $226 should be good for two people, but when it's not there are always food shelves.

You're not using your food card for two days of meth or something. You're using it to eat.

It's OK to swallow your pride if it keeps food in your stomach and a roof over your head.

Thanks for being another person that the rest of us has to pay for.

You better not be using that money to buy $16 bag of name brand chicken breasts, my biggest pet peeve is seeing people with EBT cards at the store, purchasing all top name brand items when its fucking common sense buying store brand would save you more money.

People just fucking annoy the shit out of me.

Use them while they still work, there may be a day they don't work, or just don't buy much.

Go fuck yourself, they can spend that money on the food they wish to eat! My GF has two kids, and is on gov assistance. She gets $350 /mo for food (for her and the kids). $350 will last her 1 month no problem, so she picks up corned beef, steak (prime rib sometimes etc), the good milk, bacon, sandwich meats etc. She could easily go to a cheapo-mart and spend HALF of what she does now, and then sell the rest of her stamps off. But she'd rather eat quality.

It's HER choice, not yours douche bag

There's a clear difference between accepting help when you need it, versus making a permanent part of your lifestyle.

When I was young my mom kept us fed with food stamps, and "Commodities" she got from her church. Anyone else know the flavor of government cheese? The shit ain't bad.

Did you know that these days you can use the system to buy not only big name brands, but also Papa Johns take and bake pizza, gas station sodas, and chips? Maybe its just me but if you are spending someone else's money, then it should be spent on real food not junk food.

I fully support the welfare system for people that need it. But I don't think its any way to live long term, and it pisses me off when fully capable people refuse to put forth an effort. It also confuses me as to how people can just leach the system for a lifetime, settling for mediocrity, and never aspire to be better.

Don't feel shitty about it

It can happen to us all

We can all get sick/without job once in our lives

When I had no money I thought of it more like the less I eat the healthier I get, I didn't eat each day etc., lost a lot of weight etc.

I don't mind paying my taxes, because I am sure that most people won't abuse social services where I live like I wouldn't myself.

Got it for 1 month after my education when I didn't have a job, then I found a job I had for many years, hadn't been without job for 7-8 years till I got sick for a long time with kidney stones

So it can happen to us all

There are more important things in life than money, as long as you get a little to eat each day you can still be happy

Peace

Not a single dime! I've spent more time with both of the kids in the last 6 months than they (different fathers) their entire lives! I've also spent my own out of pocket money to do things for/with the kids as well, which just so happens to be way the fuck more than both dads combined as well (around 2 grand now worth of clothes, food, diapers, toys, play areas etc). Her and I are working out details about moving in together etc as I've been more of a father than either of those douchebags.

Truth is, her assistance barely covers rent and necessities. Without food stamps, her and the kids wouldn't have food to eat, or clothes of their backs etc.

It's not a cooshy life style, and it's not easy... The system is set up to keep poor families poor, and not give them any actual tools to get off assistance. A single mother of 2 could never get a job without day care... Think about how much that costs! MINIMUM $400 a week for 2 kids @ $5 per kid per hour for 40 hours a week. Thats $1600 a month! And thats even IF you can find someone to watch them that cheap!

So before someone judges someone else for eating "good food" with their stamps, stfu and think that maybe you have no fucking clue what you're talking about!
