I was wondering if anyone here has either met Hunter S. Thompson or seen him at one of his live appearances. I've become more and more interested in him recently and wondered what opinion people had of him, considering he isn't exactly a typical product of his time.

I've seen him on Conan O'Brian. Dude was -totally- fried. I'm not sure whether he was drunk at the time or is just that way in general, but he's certainly not a poster boy for the good effects of drug use.
Other than that, he was pretty cool, though.

He has turned incoherent mumbling into an art form -- it is truly a thing of beauty when he does it!
I remember seeing him on Charlie Rose one night, and Charlie was having a really hard time understanding what he was saying, so he was really being challenged as an interviewer -- it was excellent abuse!

Man, i was watching him on Conan last night (i have that segment on my comp) and he was totally fried, or drunk. Like what the hell, i dont see how he can still write book's and shoot automatic weapons when he's claiming to manufacture nike's in his basement, and cant even walk around the talk show guests couch the right direction.
Papaver said it, he's turned incoherent mumbling into an art. He's still got a good brain on him, and he lives on his own out in the wood's....he just cant function with people i think.
He's like a god to me too, and its funny because i myself going towards the incoherent mumblingness.

My friend could have been bullshitting me, but he said that a coworker of his on a newspaper asked him for an interview, and Hunter told him that he had to bring him something (e.g. pot, coke) or else he wouldnt sit down for an interview. I could imagine this happening, but you never know.

If i had status i wouldnt do interview's without getting high, i think thats fair enough. I like being high, and if your high profile the interviewer has to deal with that.

If I could ask him anything I'd want to know where the hell he gets those glasses. I've been looking for them but can't find them, though they must exist.

Yea, I also have a pair like them that i got at a thrift store...but if you want the real things, their much different than J.D.'s...i seen a picture of H.S.T. and Dr. Gonzo on the back of my copy of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas...his glasses are wierd, pink glasses...and speaking of my copy of FaLiLV, it is indeed signed by HST himself, my dad got it signed by him.

These remind me of the ones in the movie. http://www.iguanaclothing.com/GLA0001.html
I thought I heard somewhere, maybe on the commentary for it that Johnny got those glasses from Hunter's personal collection.

Hunter was pissed off that Conan had no plans on talking about his book (the reason he got conned into going on the show) so he got loaded on booze and hash in the dressing room and didn't give a fuck about what he went on. I read that in an recent interview, I also read he is marrying his assistant Anita. Hunter would have to of taken over the show to do his rants, tossing question after question at him will just confuse him.

I dressed up as hunters thompson once for halloween- we went to a rave a sold acid.
all it took was a gilligan hat, some big yellow tint aviator sunglasses from the army/navy store, a hawaiian shirt, and a ciggarrette filter!
people at that rave were trippin out!

Ok, here's what I know about the good doctor:
Currently Resides in Colorado A friend I work with went to his ranch but never met the dude He HAS married Anita recently He writes a semi-weekly column on ESPN.com called hey rube, type that in and do a search, you'll find some of his recent work The good doctor recently had back surgery The good doctor acted as Warren Zevon's personal physician

PDU, could you upload or provide a link to that segment, I'd really like to see it. Thanks!
