Totally fucked the computer beyond all imagination now
    #17623802 -

So ye I installed ubuntu - after its lack of suppoert for softaware i need for my business - like my adress labeler and the 120 steop process of typing in commands at a promt just to install anyone driver - i realised its not for me

But dam its fucked my laptop completely.  The recovery partitions gone - no disc.

I had 2 discs a toshiba ecovery one and win xp - the win xp cudnt recodgnise the HD and crashed everytime.  The toshiba disc installed win but in the process altered my bios and somehow fucking the wireless.  Wireless is now complete unaccesable in either ubunto or this vista installation.

I'm attempting to manually alter ther network driver in the vista side but the fact its fucked the ubunto one as well from this bios alteration tells me im gonna need more thasn that...

and thats where I'm fucked...  I have no idea how I can make my bios go back to whaat it should be and get wi fi working :frown:

Installing a different OS to your hard drive shouldn't change your bios settings at all, only the boot order of devices since you have to set your disk drive as the first boot drive. If you continue to install an OS and there is lack of driver support, perhaps your hard ware is very old and newer OS's have a lack of support for drivers, linux drivers are generally better supporting a wider range of hardware then windows, not the other way around, unless the hard ware is brand new.

I'll tell you, you telling me that every time you install a new OS on your hard drive that your OS crashes, is very much giving me the feeling that your hard drive is corrupted. I'd definitely think of replacing that, or possibly just getting a brand new computer all together. I would try installing windows, then going to cmd, and running chkdsk -f or chkdsk -r and both will give the option to re boot the computer and check the disk at next boot. Or put in the linux live cd and run fsck after selecting a terminal shell boot at the grub menu. You'll need to pick the drive and partition your OS is installed on, and I'm assuming that will be dev1/sda1

I'm pretty sure your hard drive is fucked though. Take it out, back up your files to another computer using a usb transfer drive, NOW when the disk spins up, listen for any strange sounds. Most likely though, you won't hear it, but pretty sure it's fucked

My guess is that you changed the whole  file system on your hard drive when you installed linux.

did you install linux on a partition?

If i were you i would just back everything up and then re-format the entire drive then re-install.

since you already re-installed windows but only your network card isn't working this is what i suggest:

search google for the latest drivers from the manufacturer and install them.

if you insist its your bios download the lastest version of bios from the manufacturer of your motherboard and try that.

I'm pretty sure its not your bios though.

Like shins said, format your hard drive, with ntfs file system, and

reinstall the windows o/s. Your computer should have a cao sticker on

it with the windows key. Borrow or download a version of a OEM disk

that matches the version on your coa.

Check your bios settings, but be careful of replacing the bios.

Flashing it can go wrong and if it does, it can be VERY difficult and

expensive to correct. Been there!

If he formatted his drive to partition a sector with ext instead of ntfs, and windows wouldn't allow him to install over a sector partitioned with that file system, I don't believe the windows install would have worked, but windows installing then not working seems unlikely.

Also, in my experience I've heard that formatting a drive with ntfs often prevents linux from being installed on the partition, but I've heard that windows will install over EXT created partition table just fine, and none the less still think his drive is mostly corrupt, I don't think if the disk didn't agree with the partition that the install would have finished and then given the user problems at reboot, I just don't think the install would have been able to finish. Just my .02 :2cents:

  • Pop in Ubuntu live cd
  • Run gparted
  • Remove all partitions from hard disk so that none remain
  • Pop in WinXP install cd
  • Start from the WinXP cd in recovery mode with command prompt to fix your MBR like explained e.g. here
  • Reboot and install Windows from the cd and let the Win installer partition your drive
  • Then install all drivers, especially wireless if you value your internetz

By removing all partitions on the driveand re-creating the MBR, you won't be bugged by remnants of Ubuntu.

I agree. I think a windows 7 install disk will let you reformat/ remove partions on a hard drive to ntfs before installing the o/s. I am pretty sure I have done this when working on my friends laptop that had ubuntu on the drive, and went back to windows.

Or just delete the partitions using the Windows disc.

You know... rather than asking people to use a second disc. Likely one they don't have and may not have even heard of.

Ahh, "recovery partitions."

A needlessly complicated way to do what I do with a usb key, and an operating system image.

What koraks said. Delete all your partitions, make one, install windows (or linux) on it. Nothing you can do in software can fuck up your hardware, except for overclocking, which does not apply to networking (wireless or ethernet)

He installed Ubuntu, so he probably has an Ubuntu disc lying around. Also, deleting the partitions on a disc that was partitioned with linux using a tool that doesn't understand the partition table (i.e. Windows) is more likely to corrupt things and the cleanup will be more difficult. But usually, the Win disc will also work fine. Thanks for constructively sharing your knowledge.

Maybe the European version of the disc.

Yeah, whatever. Since the mid-1990s when I started out working as a computer tech in my dad's company, I never came across a fucked up partition table, so what am I talking about anyway, huh?

I had a computer with a fucked up MBR before, had windows and linux dual booting. It's not fun. I think I used the windows recovery console to rebuild the mbr and had to delete the linux partition. Or I deleted it, being as I was fed up with it.

It's not hard to rebuild a MBR.

Not at all especially if you use something called boot-repair disk, and skip over all the crap that you do with fixmbr command in windows recovery console. Boot-repair disk is linux based and should fix all mbr issues, as well as can come up with a boot-info summary text file that you can save and upload to a web server like this one so people can see your script. it's on the live cd but will probably try and analyze the grub menu for the live cd so won't analyze the boot order properly. Best thing is to download the .iso from a site like this one:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/boot-repair-cd/

burn the image to a disk using an .iso burning application, then boot to the disk and run it from boot.

I am having a hard time though thinking this is just a fucked up partition table, with possible in contiguous partitions or partitions partitioned with an incompatible file system. I've seen ntfs partitions be as stubborn as to not let any type of OS except windows install over the partition, but Linux ext is generally a pretty stable partition table for some reason, and should theoretically allow any type of file system to be written over it including mac os x.

If this is like the 5th time he's tried installing an OS and reformatted the partition, I'd have a hard time believing the disk isn't corrupt for some reason. A corrupt hard drive will usually have good sectors and won't just give you an error on start up "boot device not found" or "OS not found" every time. Often times the good sectors will let you write into them but the corrupt sectors will fuck everything up once you boot the pc and try booting the operating system. I would seriously recommend to the OP before continuing on any other course to put the linux live cd in, boot to it, and at grub menu, chose the command shell prompt, then run fsck, and as long as the file system isn't mounted, do a serious check on all partitions. Make SURE you run fsck from a terminal session while the operating system is un mounted, or you will see command argument output returns such as these:

fsck
fsck from util-linux 2.20.1
e2fsck 1.42 (29-Nov-2011)
/dev/sda1 is mounted.

WARNING!!!  The filesystem is mounted.  If you continue you ***WILL***
cause ***SEVERE*** filesystem damage.

Do you really want to continue<n>? no

check aborted.
Dimension-4700:~$ umount -a
umount: only root can do that

If you want to see how to toggle around with fsck a bit, read into this thread a bit:

I have it running dual boot but the wifi adapter has been altered in the bios.

The win recovery disc I used seemd to tell the bios I have a diff network adapter and now I can access wifi or ethernet in either os.

I dunno what to do as it seems to of made changes to the bios i wasnt even aware was possible!
