What is this process that's slowing down my computer?
    #1865205 - 08/30/03 09:41 AM (13 years, 3 months ago)

Lately when I've been online gaming I've been getting a huge amount of lag. So I opened task manager and monitored the processes running. Since I had no programs running, my system idle process should be close to 100% normally. But it would go down to as little as 82% periodically. I found one unknown process that was gobbling cpu in spurts, msmngr32.exe. I ended that process and my cpu availability went back to 98% or so and stayed there. I had no lag after that.

Trouble is I don't know what this process is, I haven't installed any new programs on my pc lately. This program starts itself everytime I restart my computer. I installed a firewall and got this message when I connected to the internet: "mIRC is trying to connect to stealth.chatz.org (IP address) packet to 7648." Irc is internet relay chat right? If so, I haven't used that in years, and never on this computer. Any ideas as to what this is? I run WIN2k pro. I have no anti-virus program right now on my pc. The file is located in my windows update folder so normally I wouldn't be so suspicious except for the fact that only lately has this been happening and the website..stealth? The site does not exist.

Ok I found out that it is a virus called BKDR_WOMANIZ.C.
I went to trendmicro.com and it scanned, located, and removed the virus for free. I'm going to get norton antivirus today. Been putting it off, but I never had a virus until two weeks ago. Two viruses in three weeks, screw that.

Yes, I did that. I ran the free housecall online virus scan at the trendmicro.com site and it found four more viruses! I had never had a virus until a couple weeks ago when the blaster worm got me. I had several different kinds- I kind of got the "sampler pack" of computer viruses heh. I went out and bought Mcafee and it found five more viruses that trendmicro didn't spot. They were mostly programs to launch denial of service attacks on irc. There was one particularly nasty one that really could have fucked up my computer, but I caught it before it could do anything.

So now I have Mcafee and my sygate personal firewall running. Mcafee says it has an integrated firewall, but it doesn't say what it's features are so I'm keeping the sygate.

I don't think msconfig works on Win2K pro. But like I said, I identified the slowdown as the result of a virus, and I got rid of it.

here is a very handy guide that tells you what all those processes do/mean: http://www.answersthatwork.com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist.htm

hope this helps
