You're correct, that the mechanism of action is the same, but the result of that mechanism can differ.  For example, people prone to anxiety get more anxious from caffeine, and it can affect people differently.

I've never met anybody that drinks a cup of coffee to help them sleep at night. Caffeine is a stimulant....not a depressant.

I get that different drugs can effect different people in different ways....but saying that caffeine is a depressant is like saying a benzo is a stimulant :justdontknow:

I used to drink a whole pot of coffee a day. Straight quit for a little while. I've recently picked it back up since school started again but I usually only allow myself one cup a day. I also occasionally allow myself a nice cold soda or cup of tea. Hard to kick the caffeine because I've truly been in love with hot coffee and tea since I was a child. Decaf isn't so bad though.

I notice that my heart rate has gone down and I'm not in a anxious haze in the afternoon anymore. Caffeine is truly hard on the body.

I had a friend in college who drank so many energy drinks while pulling all-nighters that he developed a pavlovian reaction - his body thought he was tired when he consumed caffeine.  You'd give him a red bull and he'd pass out.  It was hilarious.

My caffeine story:

I started drinking coffee in the fourth grade after noticing that caffeine kept my migraines at bay. The migraines started after I started wearing glasses and had a mild head injury.

I just about never went off of coffee until the summer between high school and college. I hadn't had a serious migraine for a few years until then, so I went off of it as an experiment. I tapered down over the course of a week, felt pretty miserable, and had a low-grade vascular headache for that week and a few days after. My motivation went through the floor, though.

Then classes picked up. Calculus was kicking my ass, and I needed something to help me kick back at it. I also began working out with a caffeine/DMAA supplement (Jack3d), and my tolerance grew. By the end of my freshman year, I was going through 2-3 cups of double strength coffee every day, and going as high as 6 when writing papers. I had the worst anxiety attack of my life, writing that stupid paper.

I cut way back on the caffeine over the next summer. Felt like shit. Depressed. Bored. Useless for the whole summer. (It didn't help that I was addicted to Reddit.)

Classes come back the next fall, and I worked back up to a cup a day. Breakfast was coffee and oatmeal an hour before class every morning. I really started feeling anxious on the come-up through my first class, felt awesome for the next two, and crashed before the last unless I re-dosed with lunch.

Winter rolls around, and I pretty much cut it back. Not feeling great, not very motivated, but functional.

Right now, I'm really careful with my caffeine intake. I hover around 20-30 milligrams, just enough to keep me active when I need it.

You need not divorce yourself from caffeine entirely. After about a week away from it, let yourself have the equivalent of maybe a can of (diet) soda, spread over an entire day. Just enough to keep yourself at that optimal hum. Taper it back when you find yourself wanting more than 50 mg in any given day.

Thank you all for your empathic responses!

Today is day one.

Ugh.

I'm cold (vasoconstriction), I'm tired, there is a subtle headache right behind my eyeballs, I'm shivery and feel mild flu like symptoms.

I'm really kicking a drug here, I dont have craving but I know that if I were to take half a cup of coffee my  would turn to :smile2: which is pretty disgusting. They say on Day 2 it hits you full blast.

Coffee always had extreme effects on me so I can probably write off this entire week as

If you quit with weed, you smoke your last joint. If you stop with cigarettes you throw away your rolling papers and flush your last tobacco.

But now I'm quitting a a drug, having withdrawal and my vacuum tin in the kitchen is full of primo gourmet coffee and I have 3 pounds on reserve. Its strange withdrawing while the drug is still in your house.

Its so far way easier than tobacco, so far they're not even in the same league.  I feel sick but I dont crave, with tobacco I make myself sick with constant fiending. I got the coffee flu, basically.

I love coffee. I like the taste, the mental focus, the warmth... And surprisingly caffeine does not give me anxiety at this point. But this thread is making me more mindful of my consumption so that I can maintain a healthy relationship with coffee. So thanks for that.

You should read up on websites that present solutions for people for chronic anxiety sufferers.  Almost all of them put heavy emphasis on quitting caffeine, even more than on quitting smoking.

Caffeine raises the same neurotransmitters as anxiety does, so when you are anxious caffeine will most of the time add to your trouble.

For me it reduces stress tolerance too :crankey:
I've gone ballistic over life frustrations when I had an extra cup of coffee, that I would have at most frowned at if I hadn't taken the extra caffeine.

But, caffeine is like meth to me, I'm super sensitive to it.

Today is day one for me too Wiccan.  We're in this together

Coffee is a cunt!  I can't do cold turkey because the headaches/brain fog/cold symptoms make it impossible for me to function, so today I replaced my morning cup of coffee with black tea, and I'm going to taper down over the next week or so to no caffeine at all.  It helps!

Good luck!!!

I'm really looking forward to being off caffeine completely again, and the feeling of being refreshed in the morning an not NEEDING anything to get my day started.....

I wonder in what ways its been adversely affecting me in these 15 years that I thought was me

Wiccan do you think piracetam is a good substitute for caffeine?

I'm currently using aniracetam and no caffeine. It's not a substitue definitely. Aniracetam has positive mental effects for sure but it won't give you that kick in this ass that caffeine or other stimulants give you that lets you know it's time to work. The nootropics are very subtle in my opinion. Still beneficial though. For the color enhancement if nothing else.

General curiosity. I looked at some caffeine crystals down the microscope and they looked like nasty tiny needles so got curious if it will fuck you up if you snort.

for me, caffeine withdrawal is almost entirely psychosomatic... i drink an epic fuck ton of it (i live in the PNW, coffee is the crux of our existence)... but now and again I get similar notions and will go up to a few months without it... one thing i can tell you, if i feel healthy and happy its absence has nil effect..  but if i'm anxious/agitated no caffeine amplifies that exponentially, big headache and way more drama than it really is... i'd taper off and only have one cup of the good stuff slowly a day.... enjoy it... give it up in the spring when you naturally are more inclined to get out of bed in the morning...

I've been a daily coffee drinker for over 10 years.  every time i give it up I get headaches and other withdrawal symptoms, and seeing as coffee is an addictive stimulant, I am pretty sure the withdrawal symptoms are physiological....

I guess I'm lucky, as I've never really had caffeine withdrawal.
It's just obnoxious trying to completely eliminate it from my diet, when everything is loaded with it, and everything decaf is foul.
Thankfully I don't drink sodas, and little coffee. It's tea for me.
