I'm thinking of quitting coffee (and tea and caffeine pills, no cheating!)
    #17612752 -

I love myself a nice warm cup of coffee in the morning. I have the gourmet shit, the super tasty coffees so its quite a treat for the palate.

HOWEVER!

I'm starting to get the feeling caffeine gives me anxiety and circulatory issues. For the past week and a half I switched to drinking half a cup of coffee and felt better in regard to stress, anxiety and body high.

Then I read this piece by a doctor that says that if you drink one cup of coffee, you're basically in mild withdrawal most of the day.  Ugh, that would explain things. He wnt on to explain that a habitual coffee drinker doesnt really get very stimulated by his cup anymore, rather, its more a daily return from withdrawal to normalcy.

If you quit caffeine tou get tired as hell, get headaches and similar issues, coming up a few hours after the last cup, intensifying until the second day and lasting 2-9 days, typically half a week to a week.

In the 15 years I drink coffee I had one period of a few days where I didnt drink coffee.  I was tired, weak and dysphoric like shit. Really not looking forward to it but I wanna know what life's like without a daily stimulant up my veins.

Are you experienced with quitting coffee?  Have you quit?  What was your habit, how hard was it and what were  the benefits?

I can read papers till blue in the face but I prefer firsthand accounts of people who actually (tried to) quit.

Motivate me!

I managed to quit caffeine cold turkey style. I used to drink 3-4 cups a day and get mad headaches when I miss my fix but I got fired so had no reason to continue drinking it.

Who needs coffee when you can vegetate in bed all day long.

I had to cut caffeine as it was inducing horrible panic attacks, I didn't notice the withdrawal symptoms as I spent the few days taking valium to keep myself stable. In any case withdrawal symptoms would have been preferable to constant anxiety.

I have experienced the withdrawal headaches before though, it's not a nice feeling and standard painkillers do nothing. I see people where I work spending all day drinking coffee to supposedly keep them productive, but in reality they end up wasting half their time going for coffee and doing nothing. Even when they are in the lab they can't seem to focus on anything for more than a few minutes.

Go for it Wiccan, you won't miss anything as regards energy levels or productivity, you'll likely become more focused, relaxed and productive. The only thing I miss about coffee is the taste

Whew, that's a tough one! Major caffeine fiend here, I've kicked cocaine and cigarettes cold turkey but the thought of giving up the joe gives me the willies.   Good luck in your journey and please post updates to let us know what kind of changes you experience along the way.  Here's to willpower!

Hey Wiccan Seeker!  I tend to cycle on and off of caffeine a lot.  I'll be on it for many months in a row, and eventually start feeling kinda strung out from it and will stop for a while.

I have currently been off caffeine for over seven weeks.  The first couple days are headaches and crankiness for me, and i think it really takes my body about two weeks to fully detox from it.

Here are the main things I notice.  My energy levels are WAY up.  I don't wake up feeling completely exhausted, dragging myself through the morning until my caffeine levels are high enough that i feel funtional.  I have a much more natural type of energy, and it stays much more steady and consistent throughout the day. This is the main benefit to being off caffeine for me, and the energy change is very significant.  It seems counter intuitive, that I would have more energy over all when off the stimulant.

Quitting caffeine has also enabled me to refocus on fitness the last 7 weeks.  I never had any problems falling asleep when on caffeine, i could drink it and fall right asleep, and sleep well.  But i noticed that I would just natrually tend to stay up later cause i wouldnt be sufficiently exhausted at the end of the day to go to bed. Now I'm much more likely to make sure my body gets the correct amount of sleep it needs consistently.  I wake up earlier feeling good, and do yoga every morning now.  Also, I eat healtheir throughout the day since i'm not drinking my energy up. And I've been really consistent with going to the gym during lunch, since i dont spend most of my mornings so exhausted as I try to boost my energy levels to normal.

Another interesting thing is my mental processing feels clearer.  I like caffiene becuase of it's ability to make me focus, but eventually it just makes my mind feel scatter brained. But once off it, I find my brain takes in and processes information in a much more holistic manner.  I don't know how to really explain it, just better overall processing instead of unfocused narrow processing.

Of course this is all just my personal experience. Your results might not be so dramatic, especially with the fitness. Part of the reason i stopped was because I realized my caffeine habit was getting in the way of my fitness goals.  But definitely watch for the overall sustained energy boost after two weeks, and the clearer thinking.

I originally used to down about 5 or 6 cups a day when I was still in college. It helped me get massive amounts of reading done in a extremely short amount of time. It super powered my speed reading. But I've tapered down a lot in the past year. Now I only drink coffee maybe once or twice a week and it's not even a full cup. Just about a fourth of it. I still get the same effect. It just doesn't last as long. I do feel a lot better these days tho.

I don't have a magical method as to how I cut down my coffee intake. Honestly I could go without it. If all the coffee in the world ceased to exist. I just stopped one day. I do that with a lot of things like cannabis. I start with a lot. Have my fun with it but eventually I just stop completely. Best advice I can give is that to occupy your mind with other things. Keep yourself busy and determined to stick by your conviction to not drink any.

Kudos to ya Wiccan_Seeker for cutting down and stopping altogether. It's certainly not easy

i only started drinking coffee about a year and a half ago.
i drink high end coffee, and brew it super strong. (i use 4 times as many grounds for 6 cups as my mother uses for 12 cups, she calls my coffee "black sludge")
i usually drink about 6 cups in the morning, sometime 8, and a couple more through out the day.
once in a while i'll go without coffee (like a day off) if i go 2 days without coffee i get a slight headache, but i used to get migraines, so caffeine withdrawal headaches ain't shit.

I think caffeine is okay in reasonable amounts.  I normally just drink 1.5 cups medium-strong coffee in the morning.  Then later on in the day I switch to Peach Ice Tea Snapple.  The coffee increasing my morning marijuana buzz and later dehydrates me.  I feel the Ice Tea Snapple keeps me caffeinated and hydrates me.  My parents and sister have asthma..I don't.  However I feel short on breath sometimes and these drinks help me breath better.  Maybe you've heard in Natural Remedies how a caffeine pill can help with asthma.:syringe::mushroom2:

black tea has almost as much caffeine as coffee, i think...
i guess it depends on how strong you brew them both.

Coffee has also been recently been shown to dramatically reduce the chance of prostate cancer, but only when 5-6 cups a day are drunk (at lower doses the effects are minimal) so theoretically, if a man were to switch to decaf and drink more, it would actually be a net health benefit!

Let us know how it goes and post any strategies if you successfully quit. I need to give this stuff up myself.

Good luck to you
