Good. It doesn't matter what is supposed to work but what actually works. For each person that can be quite different.  Most people are too self absorbed to realize that.

I have been doing well in school and volunteering at the local needle exchange, I have just been doing things that i think are good.  Not because of money or some kind of benefit but because it feels good to help people.  I think i'm turning over a new leaf here.

I had been confusing happiness and fun for the longest time, but i think i get it now...  and no i'm not on any drugs except my daily prescribed dose of Suboxone.

I'm not judging you man I'm doing the same stuff and for the same reasons (minus volunteering at the local needle exchange).

Don't take it the wrong way.  Alas, I still plan on doing drugs - just trying to balance it out more and keep addiction out of my life and instead more "productive" things to occupy my mind :sun:

Yeah i'm a drug addict.  Psychedelics are the only drugs i can do and not feel guilty over. The suboxone just keeps me from withdrawing, i have never gotten any high from it.  I rarely drink alcohol, and rarely smoke pot.  I have no need to, in fact i feel guilty every time i drink alcohol or smoke pot because i know in the back of my mind i'm a drug addict and this is bad.  However I haven't had a problem with alcohol, i can be around my parents who drink wine every night and not drink.  I don't drink for 3-4 weeks at a time, when i do drink i don't like to drink very much.  In fact the only drug i've ever had dependency issues with is Heroin.  I don't feel the same way about heroin as i used to.  It used to be my one and only.  My wife, my love, my everything.  Heroin was my life.  Now i don't have that romantic feeling with it i once had.  Now i see it as my downfall... that which is gonna stop me from living my life to the fullest.  I still would like to get high don't get me wrong, but i just can't.  I can't get high anymore...  It destroys everything.  Now i have enough respect for myself not to pick it up ever, cuz my life is worth more than just "one last time."

True, the only one that beats me at that is you. Why is that?

Wow. Elaborate.

You avoided question two and felt bullshit was more your thing, can you try to answer it now?

Elaborate? It's self evident to me at least  you are attention seeking and self aggrandizing. You often make claims about "those other people as lesser" and never have I seen you include yourself.  I also think you are dishonest about your intentions here and your PMs to me.  You are the kind of person imo one should never turn their back on. All this imo is part of and contributes to the pathology of this type of attention seeking.

Since you asked.

I owe you no answers as I have no respect for your intentions.  I usually try to avoid responding to your posts.

Says the one with 75k posts about I.

I often ask questions in here. When do you ask questions or ask for others opinions? No, you look at yourself as an all knower that cant sort his head out and use this "I" to get by.

If you have not seen me include myself in "rants" you have not looked well enough, please know what you're talking about before opening your mouth. Bullsitter.

Once again, a depressed mans reality.

Shall i find some opposite similar articles on how fantastic life is?

You're missing the point.  The studies in question that serve as the scientific foundation for depressive realism are not judging life as a whole (after all, that would be more of a philosophical argument than a scientifically verifiable one).  Instead, they're taking objectively measurable statistics, such as a person's abilities and their social reputation, and demonstrating that depressed people tend to have more realistic judgments about these characteristics of themselves, as opposed to happy people.

>> Isn't there a way you can be realistic (having been in the throws of depression in the past), and yet still find a meaning that serves you and choose to see the world as beautiful in this regard?

Both optimism and pessimism are distortions.  Elation and depression are distortions.  None of these achieve their existence except concomitantly with their opposite, and as such they cannot be realistic mindsets when taken as inherent and of themselves so.  Because they are not realistic mindsets, they are necessarily temporary and fleeting in nature:  one moment they are operating, the next moment they have vanished.  Even after a whole lifetime of remaining stuck in one mindset, it can vanish in an instant.  This happens when the mindset is adopted out of confusion or partiality, instead of through a sincere and wholehearted correspondence with reality.

Reality is the only constant.  Reality does not change according to our moods, dispositions, outlook, or attitude, no matter how fashionable it might be to state otherwise.  Reality simply is.  Indeed, this fact is a major component of why it is called reality.  When we are corresponding with reality correctly (realistically), we will be happy, because we will be aligning our needs and wants with the tangible, practical realities with which we are faced.  Happiness in this context is merely a state of alignment with the actual reality of existing as a sentient being.

It is reasonable to suppose that depressed individuals are probably closer to a realistic disposition than those who are not.  This is simply because there are a great many actual, tangible realities which are quite depressing to behold.  Such realities require no effort to witness, while it does require effort to ignore or turn away from them.  It is also true, however, that there are a great many actual, tangible realities which are supremely liberating to behold, and that these are just as often missed by depressed people as the more unfortunate realities are ignored or overlooked by people of inflated happiness.

Take the phenomenon of healing for example.  Whether it's the healing of a physical injury endured by a person, animal, or plant, or the healing of an emotional or spiritual injury, such healing would not be possible without a prior instance of affliction.  Emergent from this is the simple reality that the consequence of all affliction is healing--the end of affliction--the restoration of balance.  Since suffering and injury are ubiquitous, it follows that healing and reconciliation are also ubiquitous.  It is like a miracle that is happening all around us, all of the time, and it is marvellous to behold.

>> What is realistic though?  That its all going to hell?  Happy people say the opposite. So what is more realistic?

If the contention is that everything's going to hell and that this precludes feelings of elation, this is wrong.  If the contention is that everything is alright and that there's no cause for feelings of depression, this is wrong.  This is because elation and depression are not mutually exclusive; they are in fact mutually inclusive.  If on the other hand the insight is that everything is going to hell, and that this is a component of a natural order which necessarily includes interminable renewal and rejuvenation, this is a correct view, and all cause for pessimism, optimism, depression, and elation instantly vanish, revealing the uninterruptible tranquility and contentment which is the hidden seat of all such chaotic distortions.

The entire thread opens with this sentence:

Quote:
I see the world differently.

This belief right here is like a yawning chasm without bottom; its environs black with depression.  Even if one does see the world differently, the moment this is grasped is the same moment a person becomes fundamentally cutoff from everyone else on the entire planet.  This isolation itself contains an ocean of despondency.
