Help with Bolete ID
    #1751775 -

Greetings, fellow shroomerites! I found a wonderful little bolete the other day (about 3 days ago) on a long walk through the woods, and have tried in vain for the past 3 days to identify it, with no success. I'm hoping the wonderful experts here can help me out. Here's the descriptions:

Cap:
Varying among specimens from 1.5 to 4 inches across
Margin slightly incurved especially in younger specimens, definitively wavy.
Color a consistent medium to dark brown.
Pores:
Yellow in both young and old specimens, descending stalk, length of descent irregular. Semi-cuboidal, bruising brown. After a day, seperable from cap. Medium depth from 2 to 3 millimeters.
Stipe (Stem):
Solid, somewhat spongy in consistency. Slightly tough, somewhat fibrous, flesh colored from white to creamy off-white internally, cream-like with rust patches externally. Off-center.
Spore Print:
Greyish olive (more on the grey side than the olive)
Habitat:
Growing on ground amongst leaf litter in Southern Illinois mostly hardwood forest. Nearby trees include cottonwood, sycamore, oak, and maple. Nearby, I also found an Old Man of the Woods (Strobilomyces floccopus)
Notes: This mushroom seems similar to Ash Bolete (Boletinellus merulioides or Gyrodon merulioides), except it lacks radial cross-veins. Grows mostly singly, although (as is apparent from picture) there were several clustered groups.

Lemme know what you guys think. I'm absolutely stumped!

When fresh, is the cap dry or slimy?

When you bruise the pores, do they bruise bluish or greenish first, then change to brown? Or just change directly to brown?

Good description and photos.

Happy mushrooming!

ToxicMan-

Cap is initially dry, almost like suede or short velvet. In bruising the pores, they go straight to brown. Have any ideas?

I don't think your specimens are Gyrodon merulioides. The appearance of the tubes is wrong. In that species they look sort of like a cross between a chanterelle and a bolete. The tubes in your photos appear to be fairly typical polygonal tubes.

The best match I've found so far is Boletus affinis, which has a big problem with the spore print color. I doubt that you got completely the wrong color, so it's probably something else. You might recheck it - if you do, make sure you're doing it on white paper and you get a good, heavy deposit. I'd be surprised if the color changed that much.

My references don't have a bolete that quite matches your description. Yet another reason to pick up a copy of North American Boletes. That's currently the best reference around.

Happy mushrooming!
