Anyone here done acoustic wall treatments to their room?

Considering it, but haven't started on it yet.  Here is what I would do:  I have several larger (e.g. 3' X 4') canvas paintings.  These canvas paintings are inside a wooden frame, so they are about an inch or two deep.  I'd line the back of each painting with absorbent sound insulating foam.

The attempt would be to turn the existing paintings into sound insulation panels.  That way you couldn't see them very much.  I hated the idea of just placing large blocks of foam and/or panels on my walls.

That's a really good idea to make an aesthetically pleasing acoustic wall treatment.

I think it looks so bad when people just have big squares of grey foam on their walls.

I like this idea too!  I'm going to remember this

I've seen that done before.  I was planning on building my own a while back and never got around to it.  There's a specific type of mineral core, can't remember the name of it something like 1220, that absorbs sound the best.

I'm going to be purchasing this subwoofer next month:

http://www.svsound.com/subwoofers/ported-box/pb13-ultra

The SVS PB13-ULTRA

Such a badass home theater subwoofer.  Incredible reviews.  And incredible praise amongst all the HT, stereo, audiophile websites and forum boards.

Anyone who's anyone who's in the "loop" for such equipment, speaks highly of this sub.

I'm very excited

Wow nice pick what else you got. My surround sound is Klipsch rf 82 and Harmon/kardon AVR-254 I'd link it but my stupid IPad erases everything when I try to do a second link. Also ps3 for bluray and 50"LG plasma

I used to have the M&K 750thx set up with a denon reciever, really liked that set up.

Very nice speakers.  My buddy has a pair of those exact speakers too   Very capable, very nice speakers.

Nice amp too.  I like H&K's stuff.

All my gear is in the original post : http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/17470779#17470779

Right now I'm running a 5.1 setup.  Cerwin Vega D9's, Sound dynamic rears, paradigm center.  Rotel RMB-1095 power amp, Yamaha rx v1070 receiver, kenwood equializer, ps3, 42" samsung lcd.

Like most of my life, everything's used, mixed and matched and in my opinion, I make it sound good.  People are always blown away by my stereos.

But I'm due for something new...for change.

Next month I'm buying an Axiom Epic M80 system(minus subwoofer, in place for the pb13-ultra).

http://www.axiomaudio.com/epic-80-800-home-theater-system

They are an INCREDIBLE value for their quality and sound.

I get so giddy thinking about unpacking it all.

I'm also going to buy a Pioneer SC-61 receiver.

I'll have lots of equipment to get rid of after I get this new system

Holy fucking epic center ch. lol, that system looks like a hell of a set up. My next purchase I'm pretty sure I will go B&W this time, probably the low 800 series like 804s I think. I'd like to hear a merantz amp or maybe get a denon again. Not that I don't like my H&k it's awesome just, something different, this is my 2nd one in a row. I've also decided I'm going to go projector in sted of tv. I was never much of a fan before but the price has come down so much for really nice projectors for 100"+

If I happen to get rich I'd like to run JL Audios Gotham Home Sub.

B&W's are very nice.  I've owned a pair. Very pricy though. To be brutally honest with you though, you can find much better or the same without that insane mark up.

Have you ever thought about Paradigm?  They have incredible sound and highly sought after.  They offer high end products too, but cheaper then B&W

http://www.paradigm.com/products/products-by-category/floorstanding/signature/signature-series/signature-s6

That is an incredible speaker.

I highly recommend a Marantz for your next receiver.  All the new receivers, depending on make, come with some form of auto calibration/equalization.  Marantz comes with certified Audessy(so does Denon though )

I can't remember for sure, but I think it's the Marants 701 that's great bang for your buck.  Something like that anyway.

I'm also eyeing up projectors.  They are getting so cheap like you said.  They are also getting a hell of a lot brighter so you don't NEED a dedicated basement dwelling home theater room to enjoy good picture(though it's still ideal)

If I do buy a regular tv again, I'll definetely buy plasma.  I love my sci-fi and horror genre...and the plasma kicks ass for blacks.

Funny you mention the JL Fathom Sub...

check this link out(AVS is an incredible forum board in regards to audio)

Those paradigm look really nice too.

I said the Gotham it's a whole other beast with a different amp. When I do get the new system I'm going to keep an eye out on that sub you got, I'd much rather stay under 2k for the sub.

ah ic, I just took another look.  Your right, two different subs.  The Gotham looks like a very nice sub, good reviews.  Looks damn sexy too.

Yeah some very notable subs to check out:

SVS PB13-Ultra
Seaton Submersive HP
Rythmik
Definitive Technology Supercube
HSU

It's nice to bullshit with like minded people about stereo.

Nothing like it.

I'm looking forward to getting my first SACD player.  A Oppo bdp-103.  I can't wait to hear my Dark Side of the Moon in all it's 5.1 glory!

What's your favorite part of the 5.1 set up? Like what part do you have to have as perfect as your budget can make happen, speaker wise.

For me my center ch. has to be amazing. The one I have now is pretty good but I'm not as happy with it as the one that was in my M&K 750-thx. I really like the vocals to stand out with a really, full sound. Like I said mine is great just when I listen with a critical ear I think it's to flat for my taste.

It wasn't until I got my HSU sub that I really appreciated tight bass.  My sub goes low enough to the point where you can't really "hear" the bass at all.  You (literally) just feel it.  It's an odd sensation to feel the room vibrating and air moving, while hearing very little noise.

I've also found speaker placement to be critical, especially as you move up to 7.1.

Diehards typically listen to music in stereo.  It's somewhat interesting you prefer your vocals coming out of the center, but as long as you like it you're good.

Center ch. For home theater I don't listen to music through it my home theater unless it's a DVD or bluray concert of course.

Ya I love a sub that will play that low. Years back in my car I had a JL Audio 18w3 and I loved when I was listening to music that would throw one of them really low notes in there and the car air would be moving so much your voice was distorted if you talked.

That sub was such a surprise unlike any 18" sub most people have heard. I put it in a sealed enclosure and the sub played nice and tight, grow in some Metallica no problem some DJ magic mike or tech master p.e.b. no problem.

boomin: My favourite part of a 5.1 system, and the most important in my mind, is the main fronts.  They are the life of the system.

I'm might be a tad biased though because I have been a 2 channel stereo guy most of my life.

But I think logically, the fronts are the backbone of any 5.1 system.

badchad:  Very nice choice with the HSU.  I know what you mean, good bass is an incredible experience.  Most people don't realize what true bass should sound like in a properly set up system.  I have found, myself included, that people are used to hearing distortion, when played at reference levels, below 80z.  When you get a system that plays at reference levels and the signals below 80z sounds are clean...it throws people off.  They like the "old setup" better.

Getting good bass response can take a lot of patience.  One of the best starting points is good placement.  In a corner is usually a no no...it creates to much "boom".

The best way to find the best location for a subwoofer is to hook up the subwoofer at your exact listening spot.  Put on a good bass track/movie and then walk around the perimeter of the room(slightly crouched so your ears would be at the same level as when sitting in your listening spot) until you find the spot that has the best smooth, deep bass.  That's where you should put your subwoofer.

In a two ch. system I would agree, but in 5.1 or greater your center is the vocals almost all the time when watching movies. If you had to sacrifice in your system it seems to me the center would be the one you couldn't. You could run a sub par system with a great center and live with it. But if everything else is good and your center sucks ass your gona be pissed when someone's talking during any sound effects going on. I guess that's my thinking on it.

I guess it's what you use your system for.

I'm like 60 music/40 HT.

I could easily live without a good center.  I'm doing it right now.  I have a horrible center.  I can compensate with phantom mode and/or using my tv's speaker for the center.

The fronts are where all the good stuff is at.  The music and millions of incredible sound effects.

Maybe I haven't been introduced to what an incredible center channel can add.  If I get this axiom system, the center channel is supposed to be incredible.

Maybe I'll change my tune

Only in movies remember ALL my conversation is home theater not for music, my car is for music :thedude:

My car I had (just recently had to dump it cuz of divorce) 2 12" JL Audio W3V3 in a sealed enclosure with a JL Audio 500/1 (500 watts RMS)
2 JL 6x9's in the rear and 2 JL 6.5 XR component speakers in the front All run off the 300/4
from my stereo I ran a JL Audio clean sweep that takes all of the signal cleans it up and sends it flat to the amps at 8v mmmmm good amps like 8v
Oh man it sounded nice!

Ahh that's a good bluray

Yep you have to sound deaden  that shit, it gets expensive but man it makes it tons better inside. I would cover all the inside of my car, the doors, roof, floor everything. Most of the road noise goes away and your music stays in the car more. Rattling means sound is escaping.
