>> As far as depression goes...Get over it

>> but our generation is starting to wake up at an amazing rate.

Wait until you see more than one generation express this kind of sentiment, only to watch the world grow even more corrupt.  Then you will understand that depression is, for some people, not something they can just "get over".

I've been posting here for nearly 15 years.  I've seen successive rounds of young people come through here proclaiming that there's was the wake-up generation that was going to change the world.  I was one of them.  Yet, here we are.  Labour is completely and totally owned from top to bottom.  The people have no control over their destiny, and their lives are dominated by vice.  It takes the lions share of a person's energy and creativity simply to earn their means of subsistence.

Before you go ahead and pronounce the virtues of the Arab spring, take a closer look at what's happening in those nations following their popular uprisings.  You'll see that each of them is again soaking up the corruption they squeezed out, like a wrung-out sponge dropped in its own puddle.  Where there exists a power vacuum, the worst among us are invariably drawn in.

It's true that every generation will fall flat on its ambition until one of them doesn't.  It takes only one generation, or even just one individual to catalyze a new paradigm.  It's true that we may yet see in our lifetimes an inversion of the corrupt value system which drives human impetus.  When you've seen one generation, and then another generation, and then another generation make this promise, though, you'll see the way in which skepticism, not optimism, is often regarded as the more trustworthy mode of thought.

Perhaps then you'll know what depression actually means:  it is to trust and have naturally-arising faith in those thoughts and attitudes which are bleak and uncompromising, and it is to mistrust and regard as suspicious those thoughts and attitudes which anticipate the best outcome.  As distorted such a modality may be, it is valid; it has a basis; and as such it ought to be taken seriously.

Specifically, when encountering depressed people, the most unhelpful approach to take is a dismissive or oppositional one.  It is a defining trait of depression to feel alienated and misunderstood.  What people in the grips of depression require is a sincere reception, to be heard and validated.  Speaking as someone who understands thoroughly what Cognitive_Shift is experiencing, I can promise you that the command "get over it" is ten times more likely to solicit the exact opposite outcome.

Right you are.

And depression often starts in childhood. Mine certainly did and over years and years it gets pretty hardwired and can actually change brain structure and normal brain function according to some of the things I've heard.  I certainly believe that from experience.  Most depressed people are not in love with the condition nor can they just get over it as you said.

I'm Not In Love
It's Just A Silly Phase
I'm Going Through

The real "freedom" in this world if there is any
Is to at least start to truly not care
What other people and even you yourself
"Think about you"

The labeling backbiting mass hysteria and
Instant judgement of the media
Has extended to the common man
As if everyone is God

They are not
They are mortals
They are sheeples
They will not be
Here for long

I would rather know
How bad things are
As long as it's
How bad they REALLY
Are

REALITY

What a concept.

I own $250 Sennheisers but never use them unless there are some lyrics I can't understand. Otherwise I'll take speakers any day.

What a stoopid, ignorant remark.  You'll do well here newb.

What is "stoopid" and "ignorant" is to live your life based off of the downfalls you have experienced. Pick yourself up, shake it off, and move on. You will constantly be faced with new challenges and upsets in life. If you dwell on each of those situations you won't be able to progress. Instead look at what has positively affected you in your life. Continue down that tract and continue to do what makes you happy. Yes depression is hard to get over I know this. I have faced depression to serious levels where i just wanted to get away from everything. The truth is, is only you can put yourself into a state of depression. You are in control of your own life and your own actions. To think otherwise is absolutely absurd. Look back on your life and think about how many times you have made the wrong decision that put you into your state of depression. If you let this run your life, then expect to get nowhere far. Look for new ways to bring happiness and stability into your life. There are always options...It is you, who chooses what option to follow, and from their the consequences are all on you too.
Stop blaming others for your sadness and take control of your life and change it.

No you don't, imo you don't know shit about chronic depression no matter what you might be expecting us to believe.

I've been fucking picking myself up for 60 years, I know I've done pretty well too and had a life many would envy even today.  Still, the fact remains I've had low grade chronic depression all of my life.

You are so fos I can hardly believe it.  You think because you have experienced some depression you understand everyone else's depression.  How stoopid is that?:braindamage: (very very stoopid)

Though I do agree to an extent of what your saying is right...I also believe that you have failed to realize where we are today in society. Though technology is relatively weak, the resources we are provided with today make it so that just about anything can be accomplished. Yes our economy and the world economy is failing terribly. This causes people to lose their jobs and fall behind on their bills. This is the most common form of depression, money issues. Though for the most part, all of this is in our control. The problem is, people don't take the time to look at their lives and where it is going. Do a little bit of research about your field, job, etc and you will learn a lot more to the back-bone of the company. (Lies, cover-ups, financial status, etc.)
From there you can decide whether you want to continue in your business or try to move on. Again all in our control.
Through you choices in life might limit you to your possibilities of growth. Our society is ran by a group of elites and they determine where you go through the choices in your life. With every experience there are two paths. The right path and the wrong path, YOU KNOW WHICH IS WHICH. Yet you follow one path instead of the other due to the experiences you have previously experienced. If we can come to the realization, that the past cannot be changed, and the future is always uncertain, then we can start to take control of our lives in the NOW, which is the only true time that exists.
When you are thinking about why you are depressed, when are you doing it? In the now...Therefore if we only dwell on what has happened in the past, we won't be able to change what is happening in the now. Why? because your thoughts are so clouded by past thoughts, that you are envisioning what will happen in the future based on the past. Stop thinking about the past and future and start thinking about the now. How can I get myself out of this state of depression now? Not how will this affect me in the future. Worry more about yourself and less about others and your depression levels will decrease. Focus on what makes you happy, even if its as small a playing with a peace of string. It keeps your mind focused. When you can start to focusing on things individually, instead of focusing on things as a whole, you will start to view the world a lot differently.
Stop reflecting on the past and the future and take control of your life now. Find something that makes you happy and continue to do it regardless of anything else that comes into play. Disregard what people say or do to you. They are inferior and have issues of their own and the simply want to pass the grief onto others. By playing into their depression you simply feed them and began to develop your own. Disregard the thoughts of other people and what they think is right/wrong.
Do what you know is right in your heart and focus on the things that will make you happy.
I recently had a traumatic break-up with my ex-girlfriend. She used me, lied to me, cheated on me, and then tried to make me out to be the bad person. I thought of all the things I could have done wrong, all the things I could have done better, and thought about anything else in between. I fell into my state of depression because I thought that no other girl was going to come into my life and that I was going to be miserable until I could find another girl to make me feel better about myself again. So then I started to do things that I thought would make me happy. I went out to the clubs, danced with other girls, spent lots of money and did whatever I wanted to do. Then I realized that that, wasn't the person I was. I then realized I never did anything wrong to begin with, I did all in my power to love and take care of this girl. Her mindset was simply somewhere else. So instead of letting myself be consumed by manufactured hatred from someone else, I began to look at how I use to do things and what truly made me happy. I also realized I am still young and there is plenty of time to change and make things better for myself. I took up a new hobby (mycology) and I have never felt better in my life then I do now.
Sometimes it takes a bit of soul-searching and falling on your face to realize what you have/ can have.
The problem today is most people never get out of their depression and continue to dwell on the things that have "screwed" them over.
Take control of your life and find something that makes you happy. Depression takes time but there is always a cure.
It is ignorant and just unfair to yourself to constantly be sad and angry about things that are out of your control.

YOU PUT YOURSELF INTO THAT STATE OF CHRONIC DEPRESSION! rofl... instead of reflecting on what the depression is about.. ask yourself what you can do to make it better. Ask yourself why you are depressed...not who did this to depress you. For someone who has been around for 60 years, you would think you have found multiple ways to deal with your depression. Instead you tell yourself that you have it instead of telling yourself to get rid of it. There is always an outlet to make yourself happy. IT IS YOU who chooses to go down another path that strays you away from what makes you truly happy. Stop thinking about what others think of you.

Absolute bullshit and yelling won't make it any less silly. Again you expect to be an expert on others depressive states using only your own limited experience.  Very ignorant.  I did all those things you stated including therapy for several years with different therapists.  I've developed some of my own workarounds like I've stated and often enjoy my life but still deal daily with chronic depression.

My depression started when I was in an severely abusive childhood situation and you claim that I caused the ensuing depression.  I'm so close to flaming you it isn't funny.

It seems your problem is you are very selective on your choices of outlets. Keep an open mind and reflect on EVERYTHING in your life that has/does make you happy. Pick on of those things and stick to it. Don't let the mistakes of yourself or the mistakes of others bring you down. Take it as a learning experience and grow from those mistakes.
As Thomas Eddison said "I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work."
“Many of life's failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.”
"When you have exhausted all possibilities, remember this - you haven't.”
"Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is to try just one more time.”
"Negative results are just what I want. They’re just as valuable to me as positive results. I can never find the thing that does the job best until I find the ones that don’t.
Take these sayings and apply it to your day to day depression. Realize that you always have options.
