Leaving for my first overseas trip this week, 16.5hr non-stop flight
    #17476365 -

I'm going to fly to Dubai this week, it will be my first time overseas and my first flight longer than 4 hours. What kind of advice would you give me to keep me occupied? Sitting here thinking about it, 16.5 hours is an entire waking day that will be spent in a ridiculously small space (economy FTL).

Shroomery, what can I expect, how do I keep sane? Anyone been to Dubai or the UAE? Carry-on limits are insane for the length of flight too!

No way I'd ever travel to a fascist shithole like Dubai, then again there are few places I would travel to now a days giving them money to continue to violently oppress people that are horribly guilty of "failure to obey".

If I lived in Europe I'd never visit the U.S.

Yeah Dubai is like the Arab  Vegas but its all hidden and built by horrible oppressing foreigners.

I wasn't kidding about the brothel shit is cheap im talking 20-50 usd :themoreyouknow:

Know someone who gave one a Hundred  she then had him over for break fest with her family  in the two or three room house they shared.  It was her mom her sister sister son and sister husband all from Africa.
And the front room where the bed was was just for whoring...

My roommate lived in Dubai for 30 something years. He's been telling me to go visit the place everyday.

Apparently its a party city, everybody goes to the club no matter their age. You're gonna have lots of fun man.

Also, precaution, when you get out of the plane, if you feel pain in the back of your calf that just feels weird and won't go away, go to the hospital immediately.

Bring your own entertainment.  I was on a flight from Melbourne to LA and the only thing besides three movies I had seen was a whole bunch of two and a half men episodes. That is my version of hell.

DVT. Deep vein thrombosis. Lack of movement allows blood to clot in the leg, when you start moving, the clot can break lose and gets caught in pulmonary blood supply - preventing blood from getting oxygenated, and you done die.

Had to take my dad straight from the airport to the ER once.

Eat an aspirin every couple hours, and walk around the cabin occasionally and this won't happen. The worst thing you can do is be dehydrated when you start the trip, drink nothing but booze, and sleep most of the flight in a weird position with parts of your body pinched up. If you find that your leg is falling asleep, you are risking a clot.

Get on the plane already tired, sleep over half of the flight :awesome: ...if you can...

Otherwise not much else you can do besides watch the movies on the flight, get up every now and then to walk about, and read books.

You can also ask the boarding desk of the airline if any free upgrades are available to your class; I managed to get bumped up to first class for free on a 16-18hr flight from Seattle to Amsterdam and hooooly shit, was that nice... Champange, bedseats, power outlets... it was a kick ass flight. Economy on the way back on the other hand :puke:

That said, I got to see greenland from the air on the way back and that was unimaginably awesome.

Is it more likely to occur over the course of plane rides because of the changes in pressure?

I get a strange pain in my leg occasionally that only goes away with time. It usually happens after I've tripped really hard and laid in bed for 6+ hours.
I'm not dead though

That sucks camel dick.  I went to China a bunch of times, the only good one was when the flight was almost empty, I stretched out on three seats and slept the whole way.

Usually, I take trazodone and just fall asleep the whole flight.  It's pretty fucking miserable.

No. It has to do with the fact that people sit without really moving for extended periods. Maybe, the fact that you can get dehydrated from the dry air and not enough fluids is a small contributing factor.

If you're flying with anyone decent, there should be a shit load of games/movies/music on the inflight systems.

Dubai is pretty cool, but stupidly hot. I remember landing there in the summer, it was 6am and 35c outside already.

Last time I did NZ I decided to do the flights back to back, so UK to Dubai with a 2hr wait, then on to Australia, 1 hr stopover and onto NZ. I was zombified by the time I landed. I think it was over 26 hrs in the air.

I had a whole row to myself from Tokyo to Perth, fell asleep BEFORE we even took off, and was awakened by the attendant for landing. A twelve hour flight and it was like it didnt even happen. I was completely beat after the previous two legs, DC to LA and LA to Tokyo, so I didn't  even need to take anything.

The whole trip took about 30 hours, door to door, which I thought was really amazing because Perth is within a few hundred miles of being on the EXACT opposite side of the planet from DC.

I have no fear of flying, but for some reason that particular flight had me spooked, I think because  was aware that the flight path would take us over Papua New Guinea, and I was imagining crashing into the most remote jungle on earth and having to fight off cannibals. I know, redonk.

Koods pretty much covered it.

Blood clots in the legs. Called DVT or phlebitis. It occurs randomly in some people but there is a strong link between long airplan flight and blood clots.

The clot in the leg blocks a vein and may get detached, whe that happens it follows the vein stright to your lungs. Its called a pulmonary embolism. On ein twenty are fatal, 100% are extremely painful (I've had one) and they are the second leading cause of sudden death in the world after heart attacks.

So yeah, pain it the legs after a long flight = serious business.
