Can you explain this equation to me? If you can, I'll gladly watch your videos and listen to you and whatnot. But if not, you really have no idea what's going on.

Has to do with the wave function of a given system.
But hey man, im no quantum professor.

See that's the thing.

Quantum mechanics is a great, awesome field. But it is very rigorous physics, which is highly mathematical. Unless you understand the math, the actual LANGUAGE, you don't understand what's going on. "Quantum" is a cool sounding word, that makes you seem intelligent when you use it. But throwing around philosophical implications about something you don't understand is intellectually dubious.

Not saying I know much about it, because I really don't. But I can admit that. I don't try talking about philosophical implications about something I don't know much about.

That's not entirely true. One can understand the implications of these equations in such a field without understanding the math behind the equations. For example, you don't need to understand why, but a man named Paul Dirac predicted the existence of antimatter by working with Schrodinger's equation. See what I'm getting at? Quantum mechanics is a field rife with prediction, probability, in-deterministic behavior, and theorizing. It isn't all mathematics. It takes talent to be able to condense the jargon into lay terms, but it is possible. The real talent, however, is being able to weed through the popular and pseudo scientific explanations of these theories and equations until you find something worth listening to.

I don't see why just because something is in our mind it makes it less real. 

Because then it's still just as real as anything else :shrug:

If you mean that we aren't capable of understanding the universe as it really is, well then I think that should be fairly obvious.  But does it make it any less real?

example:  without eyes, would we have imagined we could detect things far away without instrumentation?  without thermoreceptors, we would have seen molecules vibrating at varying rates but it would be meaningless to us.


we are limited by our senses and tricked into thinking they give us the whole picture.  But to say "nothing is real" sounds a bit too ambitious


In summary: just because we can't explain something, or just because our view of it may be completely wrong, it still exists.


If you want to get philosophical then I would argue using descartes' mind experiment that the only thing I can definitively say is "real" is the fact that I exist.  I have no idea what I am, but I exist, and therefore I am real.

I guess it's better to say...nothing is ever absolutely as it seems at all times.

That's a bit more like it.  It's like, things are only the way they are because that's the way in which we are able to interpret them.  We can only be so objective in our experiments because the very act of observing a phenomena with the senses or technology we have creates a bias.

Gotta admit I'm with Shroomerited on this one, though I also think it's intellectually dubious to challenge somebody's claims regarding something you don't understand on the sole basis of how hard it is to understand.

I should be taking physics soon so don't worry fellow Shroomerites, I'll be getting to the bottom of this trickery for us all sooner or later. :sherlock:
