Are there any real communities out there?
    #1689451 - 07/06/03 04:36 AM (14 years, 1 month ago)

What happened to the word community? It seems like what we call community in America is buying the latest products to keep the great beast going. I walk around town and most of the people I see are paranoid dysfunctional disharmonious robots, just walking in line to their next buy.
I'm becoming disgustipated with this shit. I need to rediscover my humanity! Where should I look?
Places like www.thefarm.org seem really nice, but I havn't talked to anyone that's ever lived there.... :frown:
I don't know where I belong. I quit going to high-school awhile ago, basically because I realized how little substance it all had. I don't need a certificate to say that I'm 'educated'. :tongue2: I would like to go to college though, I mean I like learning, if it's about something I'm interested in. If it's not, I don't really give a shit.
I dunno, I'm just really disillusioned with how 'it's supposed to be'. I want to say FUCK your world, I'll make my own... and then I realize I'm all alone.  :nonono:
The Shroomery should organize a real-life community for people like me, it would be fucking awesome. People could come and go as they wished, contributing to different aspects of the community. How much money do you think it would cost to purchase a relatively small portion of rural land and keep a community going? Cuz I was thinkin, maybe we could build a village in the trees like the Swiss Family Robinson... Or how about living underground? When that pole shift hits, it may be wise to take cover.
Maybe I should go join the Raelians and clone myself, creating a community of myself to interact with. I just don't know anymore.

I talked to a guy who knew someone who lived in Christiania and they absolutely loved it. This person also went up to visit and enjoyed himself so much he wishes to move up there himself. It is a self-sustaining community with their own social structure and self government that seems to work quite well. Here is an excerpt from their website:

The story of Christiania is colour full, long, and filled with battles, victories and defeats. Many of the people who began the experiment do not live here anymore, but the dream of a life lived in freedom and the idea of a city ruled by its inhabitants continues.
Now 25 years later, people from near and far still feel attracted to the magical mixture of anarchy and love of the Freetown. It all began in 1970 when a group of citizens knocked down the fence at the corner of Prinsessegade and Refshalevej close to the Grey Hall. They wanted a playground for their kids and something green to look at.

The same year an exhibition took place at Charlottenborg called "Noget for Noget" (Give and Take), where all sorts of hippies, freaks and people into macrobiotics showed themselves off, sold their goods and exhibited their art, including theatre, pictures, and happenings. An alternative newspaper called Hovedbladet (Head Magazine) was published in connection with the exhibition.

One of the articles discussed the abandoned military barrack in Badsmandsstraedes kaserne and put forward thousands of possible ideas for their use, not least as homes for the numerous young people who were unable to find accommodation elsewhere. However, the squatters movement and the alternative forces "The New Society" summer camp in Thy also needed a place for them to be able to realize their dreams.

The article resulted in a massive immigration of people form all sections of society, who came to create an alternative life based on communal living and freedom. This was the birth of Christiania.

The taking of drugs would be a basic right wouldn't it? Otherwise what is the point?

2/3 of the world lives on rice and beans, actual physical survival really isnt a issue if ya think about it. Given our skills, we'd be set for life. The problem is buying land and keeping the assholes and possibly gestapo out. Now, the real question, who wants to whore their land out to a fight club science project?!

To be honest, I've been talking about this kind of stuff with many people, and MOST PEOPLE are interested, but would make the first move.

A commune, based somewhere in the USA or Canada, with like minded and intelligent people.

There are some problems to this though. reproduction....there would be a small pool of people to choose from, and eventually we'd run out of possible marriages , etc.

So it would have to be setup so you could easily join the commune and leave at all, like you mentioned.

Also, to keep the law off of us, drug production would have to be extremely down low , well-hidden, or nonexistant.

Something like this Could, and has worked - but people need to have money to start off with.

So basically it would like being the Pennsylvania Dutch or German Hutterites up north?

I lived in a Co-Op for three semesters. In order to make it work we unfortunately had to have enforcers in the form of a labor Czar, a Trustee, etc. However the clothing optional rule made up for it. Oh, and no drugs in the common areas. 32 people living in near harmony, but turnover was high. I think the "old people" lasted 4 years at the most.

I've been to the summertown farm. Everybody there is either self employed and have their own business, or have a regular job outside the commune. There are a few employed by businesses owned by members, but not many.

That's where mushroompeople is.
