i have visited a commune twice. i think it was called a "sustainable living community" by the people who lived there.

most of the people who lived there had all lived in a giant house together at one point in time. then they bought a large area of land and all built their own houses on it.

an old hippie guy who lived in the commune gave me a tour of the place. it seemed pretty much like a normal suburban neighborhood except the houses were pretty far apart and they were all beautifully designed!

also, there were chickens running around everywhere and there were large gardens here and there. the people in the commune had rigged up this ingenious natural water filtration system using a greenhouse, so all their water got recycled and never went to waste.

the guy who showed me around was really nice and peaceful and down-to-earth. the coolest part was this pond he showed me that he had dug himself, and which he uses to bathe in during the summer.

it was a really neat place, and it was all designed so that the people who lived there could live as sustainably with the earth as they possibly could. everyone in the commune used alternate energy sources for their daily needs, and they got by just fine!

sometime in the future i plan to get in contact with a commune near me and see if i can stay there for a week and check it out in more detail. i wish everyone
could learn to live sustainably with the earth like the people in the commune i went to have learned to do. the world would be a much better place.

Namaste.

oh, and none of the people in the commune used money, either. they would simply trade goods or services when they needed each others skills to do something.

the guy also told me that the people who lived there had created their own little form of government to make sure everything ran smoothly within the commune. he said the people would also all gather together frequently to keep their relationships strong.

again, it seemed like a really neat place. i really want to go stay at one for a longer period of time instead of just visiting for a few hours during the day.

Yes, I have always been interested in living in a commune. There is just sompthing stopping me for some reason. Like I dunno what it is ... sompthing like it would be fake or sompthing. Like it would be giving up. I would love to visit one first though.

woah, i just found a website for "the farm."

it seems really cool!

edit:

here's a website that has a list of intentional communities, and you can search the list by state. there are a lot more of them than i thought!

I did for a summer in Oregon.

I had crabs and lice
and ate beans and rice.(the truth!!!)
It was fun and a great learning experiance, but we were always dirt poor and low on food and dope. The idea of a commune is great, but it seems that the one I was involved in had a few to many drainbows.
Its kind of like at rainbow gatherings. You have people that just suck up energy(food, dope) and give nothing back. I love my rainbow brothers and sisters ,but as they say I was more at home on tour making money, staying in hotels with lots of drugs.
Hooray for communes. But i'll stick to my wife ,kids and our house.

I've been to the summertown commune for the harvest festival they have every year.

Cool place. They converted to capitalism, i think in the mid eighties.

wouldn't it be weird to see them when they get bitchy and infight?  I'll bet it's like some bit taboo that they never talk about afterwards

seriously though, chinacat's experience seems to me to be more representative of how communes are in general.  I've been to a few commune house party type things in madison (they're really more like politically correct frats...) and it was pretty bummer.  the legend of the cool commune is like a pot of gold... I met this cool hippie guy who lives in a small (but really nice and maintained) house on a bit 'o land right outside of town with like 5 of his hippie friends, but they all have to work jobs and shit, so it seems to kind of defeat the purpose.

if anyone knows where there is a cool real commune though, shout it out, cause I know all about farming and working hard and shit... and I'm clean.... and I too have a utopia complex...
