Why should you? Because guns are one of the easiest ways to kill a large number of people with little effort.

so are cars. maybe we need a psych eval to drive a car too

A lot of mass murderers have no history of violence or substance abuse and seem to be at least decent people before they commit their crime.

maybe banning drugs is the anwer because I'm sure that most mass murderers
have at some time used drugs... charles manson for instance, richard ramirez
in fact I bet the majority of them have used drugs but for some reason you
choose not to believe it just as you choose to believe that guns are an easy
way to a high death toll

in fact, I'm willing to bet if you look, most of the modern mass murderers
were under psychiatric care and one psychiatric drugs, now there's a fucking
link. let's ban the head shrinkers because they're the ones causing the mass
murders since most saw a shrink

Ideally your insurance would pay for the evaluation or perhaps an evaluation for such purposes could be discounted.

lol... ideally? discounted? do doctors give discounts for shit they'll be seeing a hundred times per day? maybe obamacare will pay for the psych eval

oh wait, obamacare isnt paying for anything related to health care

I really don't appreciate the constant twisting of my words that has been a trademark of this thread. I never said this was a bad thing or that it makes you insane.

In this case I use the word unstable to mean irregular and/or  characterized by lack of emotional control. No, I never once said that seeing a psychiatrist alone is enough to disqualify you from owning a gun. Once again, trying to twist my words. I did say that most people involved in mass shootings had seen a psychiatrist before or were believed to have some sort of mental disorder.

They were seeing a psychiatrist and thus obviously mentally unstable in some way. The problem is that they weren't previously diagnosed and properly treated before acquiring a firearm. If they were, the mass shootings wouldn't have happened.

I am twisting nothing.  You said quite clearly that anyone seeing a psychiatrist is "unstable".  The question at hand was whether they had been previously diagnosed.  Simply seeing a psychiatrist is not indicative of either a mental disorder, instability or a diagnosis.

Of course mass murderers are deranged.  Do you know who else is deranged?  Subway pushers.
http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/12/03/man-pushed-in-front-of-midtown-subway-train-witnesses-say/

Simply seeing a shrink is not indicative of derangement but there are plenty of signs.  The libs have closed the asylums and released these people, often to a life of crime and homelessness.  The law forbids holding them.  Lib law.  ACLU law.

Can you point out where I said that seeing a psychiatrist is enough to disqualify you from owning a gun? I did say that most, if not all, people who see a psychiatrist believe they are in some way mentally unstable (and by that I mean they think they have a mental irregularity). Believing you have a reason to see a psychiatrist is not akin to being a murderer, and I never once suggested that. I said that if the mass murderers had been properly diagnosed the killings may not have taken place, which is a possibility.

Don't act like closing asylums was a bad thing, asylum and their practices put the entire field of mental health to shame.

There is no way to guarantee those [automobiles/drugs/hacksaws/ropes/whatever] will not be used in a horrific way. You can't control them. They could be stolen. Someone you trust may not be trustworthy. You may not see the danger in someone because you love them and refuse to believe they could hurt someone. You could develop a mental illness. Your children or children of your friends could be motivated by fascination to find a way to get their hands on them.

I have no doubt that many owners of [automobiles/drugs/hacksaws/ropes/whatever] that end up being used to murder people felt the same way you do. You think you are the definition of responsible. But, the mere fact that you have "lots of [automobiles/drugs/hacksaws/ropes/whatever]" means you could be unwitting link in a chain of events that ends with tragedy. The only truly responsible action is to not have these [automobiles/drugs/hacksaws/ropes/whatever]. You have the freedom to own [automobiles/drugs/hacksaws/ropes/whatever], but you also have the freedom to not own them.

Those [automobiles/drugs/hacksaws/ropes/whatever] are a threat to others, and even a threat to yourself.

The discussion is about guns. But... Those things can kill or maim, but those are unintended consequences. Killing is the intended purpose of guns. You know what the unintended consequences of using a gun are? Survivors.

BTW, the requirments to drive a car, like taking a test and being insured exist because cars can be dangerous and they are far stricter than requirements placed on guns.

Did you even read what I just posted? I'll copy it again for you below... I said that saying someone believes they are mentally unstable (one of the major reasons anyone sees a psychiatrist) does not automatically mean they should be disqualified from owning a gun.

They were seeing a psychiatrist and thus obviously mentally unstable in some way.  =/= anyone who is seeing a psychiatrist should not be allowed to purchase a gun.

Let me clarify further: having a mental instability does not mean you are likely to become a murderer. Anxiety is a mental instability, as is depression and neither of those things alone makes you any more likely to become a murderer and should thus not be the sole reason someone isn't allowed to have a gun.

What's really sad is that so many of you are willing to demand that the government take away your freedoms, that the government take away your rights and come into your home and tell you what to do. You're demanding that the government take your rights away, and you're not even doing it for your own safety, or for any kind of logical reason.

One shooting happens and suddenly you demand that the government take your rights away for no reason. Never mind the hundreds of stabbings that happen every year, or the millions of gun owners who don't commit crimes, or the gun owners who save peoples lives and stop criminals by using their firearms responsibly. One shooting and you ignore all the evidence to the contrary, and demand that the government take away your rights.

It's people like you that supported alcohol and drug prohibition. Gullible people who believe whatever the television news tells them to.
