Re: Headphones [Re: pwnasaurus]

I am a Grado man.
I personally own....

Sennheiser HD 280 ($100)

These are pretty decent headphones, but there are better for the price.

The noise cancelling is fantastic, and sound is great, just more flattened, not very PUNCHY bass so much as soft. When powered with a tiny headphone amp like the FiiO - they sound great plugged into an iPod.

I remember a time listening to UFOMAMMUT during an LSD trip on these puppies, and the bass was almost overwhelming with the little FiiO. Sounding so fucking awesome, crushing! Alters the trip - nice environment in the headphones.

next up -  Grado SR80i. (~$100)

These are some of the best headphones I have actually ever used (and, believe me, yadda yadda) for $100, you can NOT go wrong, open back, so sound leaks in and out, but... the clarity on good source music (like CD rather than Mp3) - is phenomenal for $100, not a TON of bass, but great soundstage and clarity, crisp highs, bright sometimes; detailed lows, wonderfully tight bass with the right music - just not overwhelming.

and my favorites  - Grado PS500's

I use these puppies every single day, top notch quality, with a proper headphone amp, these puppies satisfy.

There is not much to say, aside from... once you know you enjoy the Grado sound, you can NOT go wrong with these - they're a treat....

I spent a pretty $600 on these, but it was well worth it. :manofapproval:

gonna have to buy another pair of these after the pair i've had for ten years are finally starting to not sound as crisp. by far the best bang for your buck if you're only shopping for sound quality and not looks or some stupid shit you can wear around your neck when you're out. by the way, seriously, stop doing that.

sony mdr-7506 about $100 bucks.

No, fuck you. I didn't buy them to be ear muffs, and sometimes I'm not listening to music. I don't understand why some people get so worked up over it. Who cares where my headphones are as long as I'm not trying to put them on your head?

i got to listen to some high end headphones recently.  Felt bad man they all sounded like shit to me.

edit: oh specifically i'm talking about the senn 650's.  Sounded like absolute shit now i don't believe a word of what head-fi says.

The best below 1000$ was the various grados, but to my ears the bass was severely lacking on them.

I haven't listened to others in the series yet, but so far i like the senn 555's best.  Its got some bass, its got some balance.
wait no actually i like my technics best, pretty good sub bass for a headphone, much  much better than any other headphone i've heard in fact.  I've been wanting to demo some of the higher end DJ headphones.  If i like them i'm sure i'll make a thread about it.

I dunno, to me if there is no sub, the music sounds dead, no matter how clear the highs or how nice the staging.

Hold on. - this HEAVILY depends on what kind of music you're listening to.

When it gets to an audiophile level, you kinda do damn yourself into a whole new world.

Do not forget, Grado's say, are geared towards Classical/Jazz/Rock/Metal

Handles others very well, but it's not like BASS overload, some people find that annoying.

It's a musicians headphone.

I dunno man.  I got a decent set of studio monitors.  There is very few tunes that don't suffer from lack of sub and the lower end of the bass scale.  drums have low frequencies and low frequency harmonics.  So do those jazz instrument things, so do bass guitars.

Alot of the stuff i got to demo was lacking in just plain bass, not even like sub.

even those  Grado PS500's didn't have any thunk to any of the sounds.  It has nothing to do with being bass boost imbalanced, it has to do with being neutral, which i dunno to my ears anything with the bottom cut off doesn't sound audiophile at all.  If we were to switch it around and cut off everything about 7k or so people would go "wtf who on earth would listen to these"

I did a fair amount of research on headphones recently, and ultimately, there is no absolute best.  As has been noted, your application, personal sound preference and budget will be paramount in deciding what to buy.  In my case, I primarily wanted something flat for accurate tracking in the studio while recording, that could possibly used for parts of the mixing process as well (though I will ultimately obtain a set of open back phones for the mix/mastering process), for under $200.  I ended up with the Shure SRH-840's, and they are working well.  $140 - $199, source depending.  5 Hz - 25 kHz clean non-fatiguing response.

Imo, the reason that many tunes have somewhat underwhealming bass on speakers which strive for a neutral response - is not because the speakers are incapable of creating low frequencies accurately and powerfully - but is more because most artists want to mix their tunes so that they aren't -OVERWHEALMING- in the low frequencies when played back on a ridiculous bass boosted/sub heavy system (i.e. your average club gig)... Its easy to boost the bass in the EQ after the fact if you want a bit more, but its damn difficult to stop a tune from clipping if the bass is already a bit overbearing in the first place.

thats what i'm saying twig.  I got my monitors in the center of my room, the bass is at like 30% of what it is if i moved it to against the back wall, and even here at 30% the tunes i listen to still bump.

Would you take issue with me saying whole series of grados, and the senn 650s don't really have any low end?

Did you listen to the 650s out of a good headphone amp and a good source?  650s are extremely difficult to drive.

Add me to the Audio Technica crowd.
Plus they come in white now

But yeah, poke around HeadFi. I spent a bunch of time looking at headphones (I was looking for over ears and same price range as you) and decided on the ATH, but there are a few good options available.

First time agreeing with Jewunit. Audio Technicas are the shit.

No offence, but that is a bunch of BS.
They are open back design, NOT CLOSED design, two different sounds. My PS500's provide PLENTY of bass, it's just tight, not colored, or exaggerated. The music you were demoing is a huge thing, You just do not like the Grado sound, fine, but they are not shit.

Source, power, and quality of sound are everything, in real life, there is not as much bass... it is a difficult thing to explain.

Pompous if you will - with time :sploosh:

In fact, I would NEVER get rid of the PS500's - the clarity is mind BLASTING. LAYERS, Difficult music, becomes far more spaced out, and gives each sound it's own life, instead of drowning it with one Tone of rhythm.

Some music supports many many layers, needing a separation.
Pumping bass is not as important as you make it seem; to you it is, but you obviously have specific tastes that require it.

Just stick with Sony, better yet, go get some Beats. :loldongs:

Re: Headphones [Re: GrimTroll]

no offense grim, but sounds like the total bullshit I was reading on headfi.  both the senns and the grados I was listening to on a low price headphone amp.  I didn't catch the model but it was like 150$.  I've heard 650s Ned very specific amps to drive them but I just can't imagining them ever sounding good.

but to get back to my point, if you had spent that 600$ on speakers instead of headphones we wouldn't be having this conversation.

I don't know what you mean by I should get some beats, I just like my sounds to kind of match the levels of the recording.  i dont know how to argue with the proposition an audible frequency range isn't important.

Look man, it is an opinion, I've been sifting through headphones for well over 15 years - I have concluded what I enjoy, I NOTICE the difference in  the music I listen to!

I am sorry, but sonic depth is huge.

You would not understand, unless you were me, otherwise, this is why you can not argue, is cause there is nothing to really argue, except the fact you like things a certain way.

Also 600 on speakers, we wouldnt be having this convo, cause WE ARE TALKING ABOUT HEADPHONES, there is a reason I bought $600 headphones, it's so, I can enjoy my $1200 Loudspeaker system, on my ears, equivalence.

I am not hallucinating sir.
You just have not ... used them enough to appreciate them.

also, do not forget, we all perceive audio differently.
You're not very open minded to these points.
