Jaded by the predictability of social interactions
    #17361956 -

Over the years I have gotten increasingly more and more jaded by social interaction. It doesn't really stop me from being happy and in the moment but it does take the mystery out of 'the great mystery', the 'big question' of "what happens next?".

We're all bags of water and shit, we're a bunch of machines. Disregarding ideas of free will, and soul, we all respond in similar ways to similar situations. The more I look at our differences, the more I see that all of these bags of poop water are exactly like the bag of poop water I inhabit. Debates are boring. I know why you're saying what you say and I know why I'm saying what I say.

I have no choice but to extend compassion to all human beings because I know that in their shoes, with their knowledge, I would do and say the exact same damn things that they are saying right now. It's very very rare that someone takes me by surprise in doing something vaguely creative and unpredictable. And even then you can always pin down why they did that unpredictable thing to securing some component on Maslow's pyramid of needs.

It's like reading Harry Potter and knowing that Snape kills Dumbledore before you actually get a chance to even fucking open the book. I'm sure you guys can correlate.

I've always wondered if all we are are just a function of our experiences and genetic disposition. That if we all had exactly the same DNA and exactly the same experiences, if we would all turn out the same. It makes me wonder if we really have any choice at all. Do serial killers and rapists really have a choice to do what they do, or are they just responding to their genetic pre-disposition and their experiences.

I was feeling exactly like this yesterday while socializing with other students in my program. It's a depressing thought for sure; stuck with lame cultural programming.

Went to my local dharma center today, and after the meditation I went and grabbed coffee and food with some of the other meditators, and we talked for quite a while. All the conversations felt a lot more genuine and a lot less predictable then what I was use to. It was a pleasant surprise.

So, either make new and interesting friends, or say odd things/try to steer the conversations with your present social group to more interesting levels.

Why the heck should I have so much compassion for those that want to harm me?  Weakness shown in any pack situation is cause for mob attack.  Are you sure that maybe you just are being wimpy with all that analysis while everyone else controls you and you feel bad about it yet think you should have compassion?  And, it's nothing like reading harry potter.  Why would you read that garbage anyway?  See that's where the trouble really begins, you get into all that fantasy shit.  Next thing you know you got SAD or are hooked on some violent video game or both.

I think you misread. Compassion, not in the sense of "I'm allowing you to be stupid" but rather in the sense of "I totally understand your drive, situation and actions". If someone is an asshole I still think they're an asshole. But being aware of our machine-like nature I have no qualms about accepting their behaviour. When I was a child I'd let negative people rustle my jimmies super hard but now I almost feel pity for the ignorant as I see ignorance & negativity as a form of suffering.

White Beard, I hang out with all sorts of people. Socially I am in a very different state, I'm more of a nomadic type these days with no tribal affiliation, if you get what I mean. It doesn't matter. I meet people of all walks of life and it just digs this jadedness in harder and harder. I guess it's from all that emptiness meditation.

Everything really is just so damn empty. I mean I know how much one's intrinsic mood can colour the world. You might be depressed one day and think the whole of life is sucky and there genuinely is no point to it. You might be super happy another day and feel as if everyone else is joyful too. But these are just projections. I am not projecting here (to the limit I can humanly avoid projecting anyway).

Humour is decomposed into its logical progressions & twists. People's moods are decomposed into their causes and conditionings. People's drives are decomposed into their survival traits. Everything has an experience of uniformity, homogenity, sameness. The substance that is "happy" feels as the same substance that is "sad", that is "paper", that is "computer", that is "red", that is "pain", that is "fire", that is "space". Just a taste of sameness, voidness, sunyata. I've seen absolutely nothing, yet I've seen it all, yet I have barely had a glimpse. And it's not reversible, I've spent too much time switching on these mirror neurons to ever go back. I'm not unhappy either, I'm not bored. Quite the contrary, I am ecstatic and full of wonder and amazement. Yet... Just jaded.

It seems that in the rabid search for novelty, there is a point where the very concept of novelty itself just dissolves. A richly coloured and linguistically flavoured book is no different from another pattern in the texture of a brick. The same fingerprint pervades the universe, it is inescapable, and once you see this fingerprint it's like being able to tell everything is a shoop... just from the pixels, it's all in the pixels.

There's a lot of assumptions in this post, don't think he's talking about revenge of the nerds.

Most people are painfully predictable. As far as I can see we all operate mentally on patterns, a more sophisticated mind has and comprehends more patterns than a less sophisticated mind.
Become a musician if you're bored of people, you'll find that there are people with a lot to say and if you stopped being suprised through that you're either exposed to simple music or can't comprehend whats happening.

Any of the Great Composers could suprise you daily for the rest of your life, growing into comprehension. For myself I don't generally socialize, conversations like this but not much bs small talk. Would rather just play my Cello than talk about some shitty phone

Music is the answer.

OP I think I misread nothing.  People are still ruffling your jimmies but not as hard.  If they weren't you wouldn't be posting this.

I like the acceptance aspect but for me I won't accept that they are an asshole.  I will just be nice to their face and play the game or maybe be an asshole back but in a playful way then put them on mega tilt but in a sly way take their stack watch them cry threaten to leave and never come back.  That's what drives me.  That and me being calm handling their asshole attacks back but in a nice way never getting really bent out of shape.  It may "only be money" but really it's a mind game all of it.  That and I really am there to take their money now I realized that lately.  That's what I want.  I want Money.

I have felt like the op for at least 5 years but slowly i've started to feel like one of the sheep again. The change has gradually emerged as i gradually took less drugs. I dont enjoy coversations about mobile phones, mainstream and predictable artforms and all the other common topics of discussion but all those simple minded sheep seem to live happier lives than the philosophers. Perhaps the pursuit of conciousness exploration is making you miss the forest for the trees while the sheep just see how amazing the forest is and search for as much simple pleasure as they can find. Maybe the experience of existence is more important than the understanding

Highly disagree, an example is in music:
The ignorant who don't understand the theory behind music are only aware of a fraction of it and could not possibly appreciate as much as one who can clearly hear the harmonies count the rhythms watch the modulations. Without being aware of the subtleties it is like painting colorblind, or listening to poetry in a language you don't know.

Philosophy might make one a sad person if they're not fulfilled or lack understanding, but with understanding comes the power to transform your consciousness and to be happy while others would be sad.

I understand the analogy but i dont think appreciation for music is a valid analogy compared to understanding existence. Im actually a full time guitar/percussion/piano teacher and audio engineer on the side and have found this to make me a little jaded towards music. I dont enjoy hearing each chord progression and being aware its just a I IV V or a I VI II V or hearing the brick wall master limiters and
autotuned vocals and beat detective drum sections. My unenlightened friends just feel the song but i can hear the patterns and know how its just the same 7 notes most of the time. Even now im trying to make the analogy fit but to me the human mind is more complex than the language of music

Someone with understanding will see clearly that the emotions should be minded, and someone with understanding will see clearly how this is to be done. A philosopher would be a fool not to understand that simple concept, there are many fools.

I've met people with that problem, understand exactly what you're saying and where you're coming from. You need to change your set:
Not enjoying = not challenged = not challenging one's self = change set

On Schubert's death bed he complained of having too many new ideas to write, that he died early. One of the Great Composers, a great mind who was not at rest though he understands well enough to write concerto's at full performance speed. For myself I've studied Western Classical, Jazz, American Folk, Blues, West African Folk: Griot + Songhrai, Irish Folk, Indian Classical: Khyal + Dhrupad. My interest only grows

With understanding comes appreciation, with understanding comes the means for which change can be made. Shifting gears, shifting opinions, mental adaptation - all this requires the mind to be constantly challenged and kept aware.

I accept that i am not being challenged and expanding my horizons could improve areas of my music appreciation. It just seems that Schubert was still dissastisied at the end of his days and i would hope most of us find peace before the end. Now 11 years after i finished high school i just want to be simply happy. my days as a young man determined to create ground breaking music dont feel right anymore. But what is right for me may not be right for you so ......peace
