Portabello - time to fruit? With updated pix
    #17286363 -

I cased two small containers of Portabello spawn on 11/17/12 - 10 days ago. One plastic Chinese food container, and one small aluminum tray.  Casing is pasteurized peat, vermiculite, gypsum and calcium carbonate.  Each has remained covered, with three or four holes poked in the lids and kept at 64 - 68 degrees F for the past 10 days.

The plastic tray started out with fans of mycelia, and is now looking knotty.  The aluminum tray is still at the "fan" stage (see pix).  Shall I now remove the covers and put into fruiting conditions, or is it still too early?  This is my first batch of Ports.  Opinions??

What i was instructed to do when this happened was patch casing over the visible thick spots and put into fruiting. You should get fruits soon. But im far from an expert

I've always seen everyone patch with casing when this occurs. Looks more than ready to go!

I saw that thread when I used the search engine.  I never really got a sense as to whether that worked out well for you or not.

As a first-timer with Portabello, ANYONE with experience is an expert when compared to ME.

BTW...I was so inspired by the color and variety of mushrooms on display in your latest video, I went ahead and ordered some King Oyster and Golden Oyster cultures.  Both species seem doable given the materials I have on hand and the relatively low degree of difficulty.

I do find the variety keeps growing interesting. Each species has its own subtle difference and learning how to get each to grow together keeps my project fresh.

If i had a bit more space i would really love to compost my spent oyster sub and grow an agaricus species as some of the larger farms do. Some day.

I'd put the aluminium tray into fruiting conditions and patch the visible mycelium.

Regarding the plastic tray... I wouldn't fruit it in the same space. Hopefully I am wrong, but to me, the knotty area looks like Trichoderma right before turning green.

It really does, doesn't it Carsten.

That fan-like growth in the lower right of the other photo looks fine,
but that lumpy, sparkling stuff looks like trich ready to explode.

Good luck OP,

OK...well here it is today.  No sign of green, and it smells shroomy and fresh, BUT...the last thing I want in/near my other grow efforts is the mean green...so I moved the plastic tray out of the house to a place where I can monitor it for one more day or so before tossing it if necessary.

If it was going to go green, I would have expected it to show some sign of color other than pure white, or to have an unhealthy smell, BUT since there are multiple parties advising me and there seems to be a consensus, out it goes.

Trichoderma is such a sly mold. One minute, it's pure white, the next you are under attack by a forest of green.

I was really looking forward to seeing some fruits out of this one. I'm gonna try some Portabello soon so I can use all the references available.

I hope your tray decides to give you a good flush.:mushroom2:

True!  It is sly.  The white has more the appearance of overlay than anything else.  Its firm and smells like a freshly opened pack of mushrooms from the grocery store, but I'm not taking any chances.  No sense putting other much larger current (and future) grows at risk over one quart's worth of cased rye in a Chinese food tray.

It's back to being covered with its transparent lid out in an unheated garage far from any other grow operations for monitoring.  I'll look in on it once daily over the next 24 - 48 hours.  Temps are not SO (45-47 degrees) frigid as to kill the mycelium.

Right on, well at the very least, those temperatures should favor Portabello over trichoderma

Well, today is trash collection day, so I reluctantly placed it in a sealed bag and put it in the trash can along with the household garbage.  Still pure white.  Not a hint of green even with a powerful flashlight.

Seems to me that in all that time (gotta be close to 10 days) there should have been some detectable sporulation if it was trich - but, no sense taking even the least chance.  I have multiple blocks of Black poplar, some jars of Pearl oyster, and I've got some spore syringes of Kings and Golden oyster on the way, so it just doesn't pay to take a chance.

I'm in final assembly of my flowhood, so agar work is in my future.  Need something to do other than watch TV now that winter is setting in and outdoor activities are getting reduced to zero.

Per instructions received in this thread, I tossed the plastic Chinese food tray, and placed the aluminum tray into fruiting conditions.  Here are two pix from today, 11-30-12.  Looking OK???  Should I patch this corner, or let 'er rip?  The mycelium seems to like its current conditions, so thanks for the advice!  :super:

Yes, it is A. bisporus.

Javadog:  Very grateful for your kind words and advice.  This is new ground for me, and I'd love to have at least a few fruits to show for my labors - and to proudly display to my wife.

I'm so impressed with the skills, experience, knowledge  and the extreme patience you folks have in cultivating these intruiging life-forms.  My hat is off to each and every one of you.  This affectation is going to force me to learn REAL patience.  The kind with a capital "P".

Know that Agaricus are not the easiest...no do get down on yourself
if your initial experiments go sideways.

You will get there.

I know Ports are not the easiest, but I'd hoped I was up to it.  I patched, and 48 hours later I'm back to the same place.  The mycelium has grown through - again!

So...just leave it?

Your mycelium is still in vegetative grow mode. Maybe spray down the surface mycelium carefully with fine mist and try to lower the humidity to convince it to start fruiting.
